Diverticulosis is one of the most common diseases of the colon. Its importance arises from complications. In countries of the Western hemisphere the incidence is 10-20% beyond the age of 50. Among the natives of Africa and South-Eastern Asia it is practically unknown. It is suggested that the disease is caused by low residue diet, modern living conditions. and constitutional disorders. 500 barium enemas revealed 13,4% patients with diverticula including a 5-year-old child and a 32-year-old woman. The incidence of diverticulosis among patients over 40 years of age is 19,6%. The sex distribution

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer incidence has markedly declined among US women living with HIV (WLWH) and women without HIV (WWoH). We examined the effects of HIV and immunosuppression on cervical abnormalities in the current antiretroviral treatment era.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of WLWH and WWoH aged 29-74 years enrolled in the MACS/Women's Interagency Study Combined Cohort Study. For each participant, the first Papanicolaou smear (Pap) performed between October 2020 and March 2024 was included. Wilcoxon rank sum tests and Pearson χ 2 tests compared participant characteri

BACKGROUND: Self-collection of HPV DNA samples is recommended as a cervical cancer screening method in areas with high barriers to clinical examination, such as Ethiopia. Self-collected sample adequacy in clinical settings is high compared to clinician collection, but less is known about self-collected sample adequacy in community settings. We evaluated sample adequacy differences when samples were taken at women’s homes, a local health post, or a primary care health center in rural Ethiopia. METHODS: Women either self-collected vaginal samples for HPV DNA at home (Arm 1, n = 100), at a health

BACKGROUND: Atypical squamous cells represent a significant category in cervical cytology screening, with a varying degree of malignant potential between ASC-US and ASC-H. In low-resource settings, challenges in follow-up and testing necessitate a clear understanding of the risk associated with these diagnoses.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the Positive Predictive Value (PPV) for premalignant and malignant cervical lesions (CIN2+) in patients with ASC cytology results, and to evaluate management challenges, particularly the high loss to follow-up, in a low-resource clinical setting.
METHODS: This

Intimate partner violence affects 20-30% of women in the United States. Disparities in routine cervical cancer surveillance have been demonstrated in certain populations, including victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). This study examined and assessed the acceptability of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) self-collection among individuals who have experienced IPV. We conducted an observational study using qualitative data collection and analysis. We interviewed individuals with a history of IPV and who currently reside in Oregon. This study identified key themes describing knowledge and attitudes to

OBJECTIVES: This work is aimed to summarize the first year of the high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) screening test and compare it to the cytology screening test, regarding positivity rates and premalignant lesions diagnosed in the Israeli population. A specific consideration is for the age group 25-30 that is not considered mandatory for the HPV primary screening testing.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in women who were screened for prevention of cervical cancer in Maccabi HealthCare HMO from March 2017 to March 2019. Screening methods included hrHPV typing for types 16, 18

Background p16/Ki-67 dual immunocytochemical staining (DS) is considered easy to interpret if evaluators are properly trained, however, there is no consensus on what constitutes proper training. In the present study we evaluated a protocol for teaching DS evaluation on students inexperienced in cervical cytology. Methods Initial training on 40 DS conventional smears was provided by a senior cytotechnologist experienced in such evaluation. Afterwards, two students evaluated 118 cases. Additional training consisted mainly of discussing discrepant cases from the first evaluation and was followed

Our aim was to analyze the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) and its association with risk factors related to cervical lesions. We used 362 cervical samples from a transversal study to detect nineteen types from the high-risk HPV clade by highly sensitive PCR. Unexpectedly, we found a very high prevalence of HPV type 66 (32.8%), particularly in low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. A significant association of HPV66 with previously sexually transmitted disease was observed (p < 0.05). Our results strongly suggest that HPV66 might be indicative of cervical lesions that

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening algorithms are increasingly focused on Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening while the accuracy of using abnormal cytological findings to detect dysplastic lesions still remains important. This retrospective study correlated the results of conventional cervical cytology, colposcopy guided biopsy, and cold knife conization (CKC) procedures performed in a tertiary center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 9399 patients who underwent screening with conventional cervical cytology between 2010 and 2019 was obtained from the hospital registry. Abnormal cerv

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to identify factors associated with gaps in the correspondence program and the characteristics of those women who are not reached with a mailed invitation to screening within an organized cervical cancer screening program.
METHODS: This population-based, retrospective observational study examined the factors associated with failed correspondence mailings as part of the Ontario cervical cancer screening program. Administrative databases were used to identify eligible women who were overdue for screening or never screened yet did not receive an invitation to screeni

The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of a stepwise intervention with an increasing level of complexity and cost to increase adherence to organized cervical cancer screening. This was a randomized (1: 1) controlled trial, conducted among 13 Portuguese primary health care units. Participants (n = 1220) were women aged 25-49 years, eligible for cervical cancer screening, with a mobile phone number available. The tested intervention was a 3-step invitation to screening, based on automated text messages/phone calls (step 1), manual phone calls (step 2) and face-to-face interviews (st

OBJECTIVE: The expanding use of human papilloma virus (HPV) testing within cervical screening requires an evaluation of public understanding of HPV. This study aimed to explore HPV awareness and knowledge using a previously psychometrically validated measure in a sample of UK women aged 25 years and over.
METHODS: An anonymous web-based cross-sectional survey design was used, and responses were recorded for 246 women (mean age = 37.59, SD = 9.20).
RESULTS: Findings indicated limits to women's understanding of HPV, its transmission, treatment and link with cancer. The mean HPV knowledge score

The purpose of the study was to explore variables of the health belief model in relation to the follow-up of abnormal Pap smear among low-income women in Medellín, Colombia. Eight focus groups (62 women) were conducted according to age groups (25-45 and 46-69 years). The data were analyzed using content analysis. The participants perceived themselves as vulnerable, recognized the severity of the disease in terms of both its emotional and physical consequences, perceived the benefits of the follow-up, and mentioned cues to action, such as social support and the support of health entities. Perce

Despite the availability of cervical cancer screening tools, including those that are appropriate for low resource settings, the rates of preventive cervical cancer screening remain extremely low among women in LMICS. Nurse-led education interventions have been proven to be effective at increasing participation in healthcare recommendations. However, there is a need to determine nurses' knowledge of cervical cancer and cervical cancer prevention in order to develop effective health education interventions. Our goal was to assess Ghanaian nurses' knowledge of cervical cancer and cervical cancer

Introduction: Cervical cancer is a health concern among women worldwide, presently ranking as the second to fourth common cancer type among women in different parts of the world. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) 16 and 18 are the main causative agents of cervical cancer. However, prevention is possible with early and regular cervical cancer screening. Objective: This study aimed to identify the cervical cancer screening practices and factors affecting the screening status of African immigrant women attending selected church services in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study a
