BACKGROUND: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare and serious complication of hyperthyroidism.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his thirties of Asian descent, with non-compliant Graves' disease, presented with extremity paresis. Emergency blood tests revealed severe hypokalaemia, leading to a diagnosis of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis. The combination of uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, Asian ethnicity, paralysis, and severe hypokalaemia without other causes defined the diagnosis. Acute treatment involves non-selective beta-blockers, addressing hyperthyroidism, and potassium supplements.

We examined MMR vaccine uptake among ethnic groups in Birmingham, UK between 1994 and 2000, a period incorporating adverse MMR vaccine publicity. Although Clonorchis sinensis is a parasite that still infects many people in East Asia, its genetics remain largely unknown. We conducted ancient DNA analysis of C. sinensis eggs obtained from a Joseon period mummy newly discovered in South Korea. Clonorchis sinensis DNA was amplified for internal transcribed spacer 1, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 and 5 genes. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is an unusual complication of a fairly common disease affecting mostly Asian males. In the United States, there have been several reports of TPP in different ethnic populations and it appears that the incidence is approximately one-tenth of that found in Asian countries.
