Comparison of the efficacy of various files and irrigations on calcium hydroxide removal: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess how effective hand K-files and XP-Endo Finisher rotary files, combined with two different irrigation solutions (chlorhexidine [CHX] and sodium hypochlorite), are in eliminating calcium hydroxide (CH) from the walls of root canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-two single-root canal teeth were included in this in vitro study. After decoronation, the root canals were prepared with master apical file #30, and to shape the coronal part, #1-3 Gates-Glidden drills were used. The specimens were divided into four experimental groups (n = 18) and two control grou…

Calcium-activated chloride channels in pericytes and their role in regulating organ blood flow.

Pericytes are mural cells of the microvasculature, characterised by a distinctive 'bump-on-a-log' morphology and elongated processes extending along the abluminal surface of capillary and pre- and post-capillary segments. They are widely distributed across organs and exhibit functional heterogeneity. Contractile pericytes directly regulate local blood flow, whereas non-contractile pericytes contribute to electrical signalling by generating depolarising or hyperpolarising events that propagate to upstream vessels and coordinate tissue perfusion. These functions are closely linked to intracellul

Random Urinary Calcium/Creatinine Ratio as a Predictor of Dehydration in Hypercalcemic and Normocalcemic Patients.

Background/Objectives: Dehydration is an under-recognized cause of hypercalcemia, and no validated bedside marker exists to distinguish it from other etiologies. We evaluated the urinary calcium-to-creatinine ratio (uCa/Cr) and the fractional excretion of calcium (FeCa) as predictors of dehydration across a spectrum of hypercalcemic and normocalcemic states. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 96 patients admitted to an internal medicine ward with dehydration and/or hypercalcemia. Dehydration was identified using a combination of clinical criteria (presenting complaint, physi…

Significantly elevated calcium levels and gallstone disease in a patient with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia.

SUMMARY: Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia (FHH) is a rare, benign genetic disorder of calcium homeostasis caused by inactivating variants in CaSR, GNA11, or AP2S1 genes. It is typically characterised by mild, asymptomatic hypercalcaemia and low urinary calcium excretion. Differentiation from primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is essential, as misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary surgery. We report a case of FHH type 1 (FHH1) in a man in his thirties presenting with a serum calcium level of 2.97 mmol/L, which is at the severe end of the FHH spectrum. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous…

The additive value of coronary calcium in identifying cardiovascular risk in ageing people with HIV.

In people without HIV, raised coronary artery calcium scores (CACS) are linked to increased cardiovascular risk. HIV is associated with elevated CACS, but risk factors beyond smoking and diabetes are not well established. Data on 779 individuals with HIV who underwent a CACS scans (median age 55) were collected. CACS better predicted adverse outcomes (e.g. major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), death, heart failure) than Q-risk scores. Advanced imaging research may improve major cardiovascular risk prediction in people ageing with HIV.

Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate in Management of Dentin Hypersensitivity and Strategies for Reconstitution of the Dentin Matrix.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) prevalence ranges from 72.5%-98% and is common from the third decade of life. Despite the variety of products available, dentine hypersensitivity remains a persistent issue. From the vast array of existing products, ceramics specifically Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) based glasses seem to be the most versatile material to manage dentin hypersensitivity. Literature clearly indicates that Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) permits a multitude of possibilities as it allows integration with soft and hard tissues. The ability to generate a flexible structure …

Use of Calcium Silicate-Based Materials in the Management of Open Apices: A Case Report.

Trauma in immature teeth can lead to open apices, posing challenges for treatment. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), the traditional option, has limitations such as lengthy treatment times and risks of fracture. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has emerged as a superior alternative, offering excellent sealing and biocompatibility. This paper describes managing an immature central incisor in a 19-year-old male with necrotic pulp using an MTA apical plug, with a 24-month follow-up. The presented case outlines the difficulties encountered in treating an immature tooth with an acute apical abscess due …

The association of bisphosphonates, calcium levels and PTH levels with bioprosthetic aortic valve degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Bioprosthetic aortic valve (bAV) degeneration represents a major concern following aortic valve replacement (AVR). The association of bisphosphonates, serum calcium and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) with native AV degeneration have been studied extensively. However, their association with structural valve degeneration (SVD) is yet to be elucidated. METHODS: Patients who underwent AVR and had a baseline transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) and at least one follow-up TTE spaced three months apart were included. SVD diagnosis was made according to American Society of Echocardiography…

Calcium single atom catalyst with unusual activity and stability for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate.

Solid base catalysts with strong basicity are highly desirable for various reactions because of their minimal corrosion, ease of separation, and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, their broader application is hindered by issues including mediocre activity and poor stability. Herein, aiming at enhancing the catalytic performance and stability of conventional solid bases, we designed and fabricated calcium (Ca) single-atom solid bases on zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) derived N-doped carbon (NPC) with Ca-N4 motifs as the active center for transesterification of methanol and ethyl…

The significance of calcium ions in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury: mechanisms and intervention strategies.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) represents a multifaceted pathological phenomenon characterized by an array of molecular and cellular mechanisms, which significantly contribute to neurological dysfunction. Evidence suggests that calcium ions play an indispensable role in this context, as abnormal elevations in calcium concentrations exacerbate neuronal injury and intensify functional deficits. These ions are integral not only for intracellular signaling pathways but also for various pathological processes, such as programmed cell death, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress.…
