In an infant considered at birth as a female but with easily palpable gonads in the labia major, the XY karyotype and the endocrine studies (determination of plasma levels of steroid hormones under basal conditions and during hCG stimulation) were consistent with the diagnosis of male pseudohermaphroditism due to 17-keto reductase deficiency. Results of therapy of 257 patients with gestational trophoblastic disease (GTN), treated at one institution and by the same group of physicians (1966 to 1978), are presented. The mechanism of action of lutropin on the stimulation of the synthesis of a specific lutropin-induced protein in rat testis Leydig cells was investigated. Testicular biopsy findings in 100 infertile men were correlated with the clinical findings. Mild or moderately severe tubular lesions were seen in 57 cases and severe changes in 43. Clinical examination and semen analysis were no guide to the severity of the testicular lesion. Though patients with normal sized testes more commonly had mild tubular lesions, many were severe. The reliability of five commercially produced immunological pregnancy diagnosis methods has been investigated. The tests used were Pregnosticon (a tube test) and four slide tests, Hyland, Pregslide, Gravindex, and Planotest. In the series described, Planotest gave 0.5% false positives, Gravindex had 2.1%, Pregnosticon 2.6%, and Pregslide 4.7%, Hyland A (sensitivity 4,500 iu/l.) gave 3.6% and Hyland B (sensitivity 2 to 3,000 iu/l.) had 8.7% false positives.
