The 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey: design, content, and data availability.

The 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey was conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics to study factors related to poor pregnancy outcome, such as adequacy of prenatal care; inadequate and excessive weight gain during pregnancy; maternal smoking, drinking, and drug use; and pregnancy and delivery complications. The survey is a nationally representative sample of 11,000 women who had live births, 4000 who had late fetal deaths, and 6000 who had infant deaths in 1988. Mothers were mailed questionnaires based on information from certificates of live birth, reports of fetal

Integrating patient satisfaction into performance measurement to meet improvement challenges.

BACKGROUND: A Value Compass has been proposed to guide health care data collection. The "compass corners" represent the four types of data needed to meet health care customer expectations: appropriate clinical outcomes, improved functional status, patient satisfaction, and appropriate costs. Collection of all four types of data is necessary to select processes in need of improvement, guide improvement teams, and monitor the success of improvement efforts. INTEGRATED DATA AT BRYANLGH: BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, has adopted multiple performance measurement systems to collect c

Validity of Diagnoses of Aortic Dissection and Pulmonary Embolism in Hospitalized Patients Using the Japanese DPC Database.

Acute aortic dissection (AD) and pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) are life-threatening conditions requiring timely diagnosis. In Japan, large-scale validation studies of administrative data for these diagnoses are limited. It is required to validate the accuracy of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes for acute AD and PE in the Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) database using medical chart review as the reference standard. We reviewed DPC data from the University of Tokyo Hospital (April 2018-March 2024). Patients with I710 (AD) or I260/I269 (PE) listed in ke

The role of red blood cell distribution width in prognosis prediction among critically ill patients with obstructive sleep apnea: Insights from the MIMIC-IV database.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in critically ill patients and associated with increased mortality. This study aimed to investigate the association between red blood cell distribution width (RDW) at admission and one-year mortality in critically ill OSA patients. A retrospective cohort study involving 1950 critically ill patients with OSA from the MIMIC-IV (v3.1) database. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, multivariable Cox regression, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were performed to evaluate the association between RDW and all-cause mortality. Subgroup analyses were perfo

Iatrogenic risk of tube thoracostomy: A retrospective trauma database analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic hemothorax, pneumothorax, and hemopneumothorax are life-threatening conditions which are often treated with thoracostomy. Prior research has identified thoracostomy as an independent risk factor for both mortality and increased hospital length of stay (LOS). Given the coexistence of increased mortality and LOS, the objective of this study was to examine whether this mortality risk is driven by iatrogenic factors such as in-hospital complications. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the 2019 American College of Surgeons-Trauma Quality Program database.

Risk of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Presumed Primary Raynaud's Syndrome: A Propensity-Matched Study Using the TriNetX Database.

BACKGROUND: Raynaud's syndrome (RS) is traditionally considered a benign vasospastic disorder; however, emerging evidence suggests that it may reflect systemic vascular dysfunction and a prothrombotic state. Emerging epidemiological evidence suggests an association between RP and VTE, but further validation across different populations and analytical approaches is needed. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with the TriNetX global electronic health record database. Adult patients diagnosed with RS between 2015 and 2024 were identified and matched 1:1 with individuals without RS

The impact of peripheral nerve injuries on burn outcomes from the Burn Care Quality Platform.

The effects of peripheral nerve injury (PNI)-- on patients with burns, to include pain, sensory, and motor deficits, remain largely unexplored. The Burn Care Quality Platform (BCQP), the largest available global database of burn patients, measures rates of PNIs and other important burn outcomes, including length of acute patient stays, wound infection rate, and mortality. However, no study has explored the impact of PNI on these outcomes to date. International Classification of Disease codes were queried from the 2000-2022 BCQP to identify PNIs, such as compression syndromes and direct injury

Nighttime intensive care unit admission increased 30-day mortality in sepsis patients: a retrospective propensity-score matched analysis based on MIMIC-IV database.

Although there has been extensive research on the mortality and prognosis of sepsis, none of them has been focused on the association between mortality and timing of admission to intensive care unit (ICU) in sepsis patients. This study used MIMIC-IV data to compare mortality risk between daytime and nighttime ICU admission in sepsis patients. Propensity score matching (PSM) balanced baseline characteristics. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and multivariable Cox regression were performed. Results of primary outcome showed after adjustment for covariates, nighttime admission was associated with a

The association between fibrotic diseases and treatment-resistant hypertension in England.

AIMS: Multimorbidity has been identified as a research priority in recent years; fibrosis (progressive organ scarring) is one mechanism that may underpin multimorbidity. Some studies suggest hypertension could be fibrotic, particularly severe hypertension (uncontrollable with medications); however, it is not currently known whether severe hypertension is associated with fibrotic conditions. The objective is to investigate whether treatment-resistant hypertension is associated with fibrotic conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum primary care data

Association between the development of sepsis and the BAR index in patients with acute pancreatitis: A retrospective investigation based on MIMIC-IV database.

Sepsis, as a severe complication of acute pancreatitis (AP), needs to be identified and treated as early as possible. The blood urea nitrogen-to-albumin ratio (BAR) index has shown good predictive ability in many studies. However, its effectiveness in predicting AP complicated by sepsis has not been further verified. Therefore, this study mainly discusses the correlation between BAR and the risk of sepsis, aiming to provide a simple and early warning tool for sepsis risk stratification in AP patients. This retrospective cohort study analyzed the data of 779 AP patients from the Medical Informa
