A specific peptidoleukotriene receptor antagonist, Ro 23-3544, was tested for its efficacy in modulating DNFB-induced allergic and croton oil-induced irritant contact dermatitis in mouse ears. Exacerbation of skin lesions of dermatitis herpetiformis occurred after intake of hen's eggs in a young female and after use of fluoride containing tooth paste in another patient. Elimination of eggs from the diet in the first case and evidence of fluoride containing tooth paste in the second case resulted in remission of the skin lesions.

Antibodies against human T-lymphocytes and their subpopulations were applied to frozen sections obtained from skin affected with stasis dermatitis of the lower leg from 13 patients suffering from chronic venous insufficiency. The gluten intake was quantitated utilizing a dietary history method in 43 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis on non-restricted diet. The mean daily gluten intake was 15 g. The individual intake of gluten was related to the maintenance dose of dapsone. It was significantly higher in patients on 100-150 mg dapsone daily than in those taking 0-25 mg daily. There was a significant correlation between amount of gluten in the diet and the dapsone dose (p less than 0.01, rs = 0.43). Villous atrophy was not related to the dapsone dose. The relation of stress and family environment to symptom severity in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) was examined. Although atopic cataracts commonly occur in adolescent and young adult patients with severe atopic dermatitis, we observed a 34-year-old woman with mild atopic dermatitis who abruptly developed atopic cataracts in both eyes when she suffered from severe allergic contact dermatitis on the face. This case seems to suggest that prompt control of severe dermatitis on the face in patients with atopic dermatitis is important for prevention of atopic cataract, whether the dermatitis on the face is atopic or nonatopic in nature.

Sera from 32 patients with atopic dermatitis and 22 patients with psoriasis were examined for the presence of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in comparison to 51 healthy controls using a PEG-precipitation laser nephelometer technique. Unusual, discrete palmar and plantar symptoms observed in thirty of forty-seven children with dermatitis herpetiformis are described. Forty children with atopic eczema requiring topical steroids entered a double-blind group comparative study over 12 weeks and were randomized to either 4% sodium cromoglycate (SCG) in an oil-in-water cream or matching placebo cream. Histories of recurrent infections were obtained from 955 adults with past or present atopic dermatitis (AD) and from 199 controls. Achlorhydric atrophic gastritis occurs in approximately 25% of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). The effect of gluten withdrawal on the gastric condition was studied in 35 patients, with a control group of 20 patients continuing their habitual diet.
