Recent research indicates that identification with the western ideal of slimness can be followed by heightened weight consciousness and development of eating disorders in cultures thought to be relatively immune from developing such disorders. This article examines the mechanisms of subsistence adaptation of two Papua New Guinea populations, the Metroxylon sago-depending lowland Gidra and the taro-monoculture Mountain Ok, surviving in low population densities of 0.5 and 1.4 persons per km2. Observation of the groups' land use systems strongly suggests that their population densities have not been far below the carrying capacity, although the territory of each population is markedly heterogeneous. Intracranial haemorrhage is a major cause of severe morbidity and mortality in child abuse cases in developed countries. However, similar data are not available in most developing countries. This study therefore aimed to determine the incidence of intracranial haemorrhage amongst all cases of child physical abuse, the nature of the injuries incurred, and the morbidity and mortality resulting therefrom. Nineteen cases of undiagnosed arthritis were screened for filarial IgG antibodies to Wuchereria by Stick Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Isolation of chlamydia trachomatis from the endocervix using cyclohexamide-treated McCoy cells were done in order to estimate the prevalence rate of its infection among gynecologic out patients who had symptoms and/or signs of lower genital tract infection. There were 498 patients from May 1989 to July 1990. Eighty-six per cent of these patients were 25 years old or older. Most of them (63%) were agricultural employees. Blindness is a major problem in most developing countries. It occurs at ten times the rate seen in the developed countries and in over 80% of cases is either preventable or curable. Six hundred and fourteen acute poliomyelitis children (57% boys) admitted to the Institute of Child Health, Madras, during January 1988 to September 1989 were studied.
