The sensitivity of different MRI sequences in the detection of inner ear malformations in patients presenting with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and/or vertigo was evaluated. Piercing the earlobes has increased in popularity among males in recent years. This habit would be expected to increase the incidence of nickel and cobalt sensitization. Patch testing with nickel sulfate and cobalt chloride was performed in 520 young Swedish men doing compulsory military service. The overall frequency of nickel/cobalt positive tests was 4.2%. The present study was undertaken to clarify the altered effect of arachidonic acid on inner ear blood flow in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes by use of the laser-Doppler flowmeter. Drugs were administered intraarterially via the subclavian artery in a dose range that did not affect the systemic blood pressure. The present study was undertaken to evaluate possible beneficial effects of gammaglobulin treatment every 3 weeks during 6 months of 6-month to 2-year-old children. Every second of 44 children with recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) received gammaglobulin, the other 22 served as controls. The compound action potential (CAP) of the eighth nerve and the endocochlear potential (EP) were examined in the chinchilla as an animal model when Escherichia coli endotoxin (100 micrograms) was applied to the middle ear cavity. A significant elevation of the CAP threshold at 2, 3, and 4 kHz was observed 48 h after the instillation of endotoxin, but this hearing loss was thought to be caused by a conductive component. A group of children suffering from unilateral hearing loss (UHL) were evaluated. Serological tests were performed and vaccination against mumps was offered if negative. In 43.6% of the cases mumps was the plausible cause but a further 33.3% had positive serological tests for mumps without having had the clinical disease. The development of polypoidal structures, derived from organization of amniotic squamous debris, in the middle-ear cavity of 3 infants is described. The lesions mimicked the development of amnion nodosum lesions of the placenta and were attached to either the tympanic membrane or the head of the stapes. They were accompained by atypical metaplastic changes in the middle-ear epithelium. While the clinical significance of the structural changes is uncertain, they strengthen the case for histopathological examination of the middle ear in infant necropsies.
