BACKGROUND: Management of Class III malocclusion is one of the most challenging treatments in orthodontics, and several methods have been advocated for treatment of this condition. A new treatment protocol involves the use of an alternating rapid maxillary expansion and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) protocol, in conjunction with full-time Class III elastic wear and coupled with the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the dento-skeletal and profile soft tissue effects of this novel protocol in growing participants with retrognathic maxilla.

BACKGROUND: In many studies of patients with muscle weakness, chronic hypercapnia has appeared to be out of proportion to the severity of muscle disease, indicating that factors other than muscle weakness are involved in CO(2) retention. In patients with COPD, the unbalanced inspiratory muscle loading-to-strength ratio is thought to trigger the signal for the integrated response that leads to rapid and shallow breathing and eventually to chronic hypercapnia. This mechanism, although postulated, has not yet been assessed in patients with muscular dystrophy.

In this paper we describe a technique to make a confined environment of variable stiffness that is suitable for high-resolution live-cell imaging. Mimicking the extracellular matrix's (ECM's) integration of chiral and mechanical cues remains challenging in synthetic hydrogels. Here, we demonstrate that alkyl spacer engineering in C2-symmetric benzene-para-dicarboxamide phenylalanine derivatives enables simultaneous control of supramolecular handedness and mechanics: helical handedness follows spacer odd-even effects, while spacer elongation (n = 2→4) drives a 17-fold elastic modulus enhancement (0.45→7.64 kPa). This dual regulation provides a versatile strategy for designing biomimetic hydrogels.

This case report describes the camouflage treatment of an adult patient with hyperdivergent facial pattern presenting with severe Class II skeletal malocclusion, through the use of a hybrid clear aligner approach, that relies on both a partial lingual fixed appliance and the continuous use of Class II elastics throughout therapy. After 11 months of treatment, the goals had been achieved, highlighting that the correct diagnostic framework, proper patient selection and careful digital planning of a compromise treatment can provide satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcomes.
