Polymorphism of clinical manifestation of HPV infection in the genital mucosa - 3-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are associated with a wide variety of cutaneous and mucosal infections and with malignancies in humans. More than 100 HPV types have been identified, some of which have affinity for skin and others for mucosal sites. AIM: The purpose of this study came from our desire to support the "Stop Cervical Cancer" campaign, adopted as "Cervical Cancer Removed as a Public Health Problem", following the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative in 2019-2020. At European level, cervical cancer mortality has fallen by more than 30% over the past 30 years, through

Replaced right hepatic artery arising from inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery, in association with left multiple renal arteries: a case report using MDCT angiography.

The authors illustrate a case of a 61-year-old male who presented an extremely rare association of anatomical variations highlighted by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) angiography, with a replaced right hepatic artery (RRHA) arising from inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA), in association with left multiple renal arteries (RAs). The celiac trunk (CT) arises from the abdominal aorta (AA), at the level of middle 1∕3 of L1 vertebral body. The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) origin was located at the anterior aspect of AA, at 2.5 mm below the origin of CT, at the level of L1∕L2 i

Unroofed coronary sinus: update on diagnosis and treatment.

Unroofed coronary sinus (UCS) is among the rarest congenital heart malformations in pediatric practice. Often, they are associated with persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) draining into the left atrium, and in this situation, there is a double intracardiac shunt, right-to-left and left-to-right. They are asymptomatic in the majority of the cases. Each ordinary imagistic method (transthoracic echocardiography, contrast transesophageal echocardiography, angiography) can be helpful in finding the diagnosis, but enhanced computed tomography scan can give an irrefutable diagnosis. The surgic

The performance of hyperadherence markers in anterior placenta praevia overlying the Caesarean scar.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the ultrasound (US) impact in diagnosing placenta accreta (PA) in patients with anterior placenta praevia localization, overlying a Caesarean scar. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study between January 2016 and December 2017 that included patients with Caesarean scar and placenta praevia in the third trimester of pregnancy. By means of two-dimensional (2D) grayscale and color Doppler, we investigated the presence of the following US markers for placental invasion: intraplacental lacunae, abnormal blood vessels at the myometrium-bladder interface, t

Rare variant of renal vascularization with bilateral multiple pedicles and incomplete rotation - case report.

Renal blood vessels present great morphological variability. The routine dissection of a 68-year-old male cadaver revealed multiple bilateral vascular variations associated with the incomplete rotation of both kidneys. The left kidney was supplied by three renal arteries: one superior artery and one middle artery with hilum penetration, and one inferior artery with inferior polar penetration. All three arteries arose from the aorta: two from the anterior side at levels L1 and L3, and one - the inferior artery - from the posterior side of the aorta, as a common trunk with the middle sacral arte

Polycystic kidney disease in neonates and infants. Clinical diagnosis and histopathological correlation.

A significant cause of end-stage renal disease in infants (40% to 50% of cases) is represented by the group of renal cystic diseases. Actually, the fourth cause of renal failure in young adults is the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Moreover, the most common genetically inherited kidney disease was proved to be ADPKD, affecting 1-5 per 10 000 individuals. The study was conducted over a period of three years (July 26, 2015-October 30, 2018) on 22 patients aged between two days and 36 months, diagnosed with polycystic kidneys that presented multiple hospital admissions in t

Inflammation: predictive factor for negative evolution of prostate diseases.

The most frequent prostate diseases depending on age are prostatitis in young men, benign prostate hypertrophy in men over 50 years old, and prostate cancer (PCa) in elderly patients. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the role of inflammation in the progression of prostate diseases. We used clinical and paraclinical techniques for the positive diagnosis [serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination, we performed transrectal ultrasound to asses the prostate volume and prostate biopsy or transurethral resection of the prostate, where it was imposed]. The prostate tissue specimens we

Neurofibromatosis type 1 associated with moyamoya syndrome. Case report and review of the literature.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder with a very heterogeneous clinical picture, affecting central nervous system, skin and bone system. Cerebrovascular lesions, such as moyamoya syndrome, are rarely seen in NF1. Approximately 250 children with NF1 and moyamoya syndrome have been reported. The clinical picture includes hemiparesis, hemianopsia, paresthesia, seizures, speech disorders, and intellectual disability. In this paper, we report on a 6-year-old girl with NF1 and moyamoya syndrome, with a brief review of the existing literature.

Spermatic vein aneurysm: a report of a unique case and review of the literature.

A spermatic vessel aneurysm is a rare entity, described only a few times in the literature. In most cases, it is caused by trauma or inflammation and appears as a painful mass in the scrotum or the inguinal area. We present a case of a 22-year-old man who came to our Surgical Department with a painful, palpable mass in the right inguinal area. A spermatic vein aneurysm was diagnosed with the use of ultrasonography and it was surgically excised. The findings were confirmed by pathological examination. The patient is well, four months after surgery. A spermatic vessel aneurysm, though rare, shou

Evaluation of iNOS -2087A>G polymorphism in recurrent pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: Due to its role in angiogenesis, the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene promoter polymorphism may have a presumed role in recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSA). It is an intensely studied protein, a biological mediator, a modulator and an effector molecule by implication in numerous physiological processes: vasodilatation, angiogenesis, immunity, tissue remodeling, smooth muscle activity. AIM: Our study aims to investigate a possible association between iNOS -2087A>G (rs2297518) polymorphism and the occurrence of idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). PATIENTS, MATER

Blue nevus-like melanoma of the uterine cervix. Case report and review of the literature.

We present the clinical and pathological aspects of a patient diagnosed with a very rare tumor, a blue nevus-like melanoma of the uterine cervix. The patient turned to our Service for a second opinion regarding a cervical polyp causing vaginal bleeding, polyp which has been excised in another Hospital and interpreted initially as a pleomorphic sarcoma. In the presentation, we emphasize upon the stages of solving a difficult diagnosis, pathological description and treatment of these rare, aggressive tumors with poor prognosis, which represent the fundamental precondition in order to formulate t

Frostbite arthropathy - a rare case of osteoarthritis, review of the literature and case presentation.

Frostbite affects more commonly the northern population then it was suspected earlier, but wherever cold winter occurs, cold caused lesions are reported. Most often, it is described as soft tissue lesions, but deeper structures like tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage or bones can be affected. All extremities can be involved; lesions can lead to necrosis and amputations. First documented cases were described during military actions, but occupational or recreational activities can also be a risk factor for frostbite. Frozen or frostbite arthropathy is a rare cause of osteoarthritis. Usually,

Complex evaluation in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a very common, slowly progressive and incurable articular disease resulting in the breakdown of cartilage and bone in the joint, which causes significant discomfort, pain and disability, with a significant socio-economic impact. The aim of our observational study for patients with symptomatic KOA was to investigate the changes of C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) in serum pre and post a complex rehabilitation program and to establish the correlation between all studied parameters [clinical, functional, serum CTX-II (sCTX-II) and histological aspec

Pathological fractures of humerus in children. Therapeutic and pathological considerations.

INTRODUCTION: A pathological fracture appears after a low-energy trauma or minor trauma on bones with a modified histological structure; sometimes, the patient reports shoulder pain antedating the fracture. The most common benign bone tumors that cause pathological fractures in children are simple bone cysts, aneurysmal bone cysts, non-ossifying fibromas and fibrous dysplasia. This type of bone tumors is usually asymptomatic until they reach a large size and cause a pathological fracture after minor trauma. The optimal treatment remains controversial. Our objective was to describe our modern t

Nodular subcutaneous lesion - an alarming sign for an upcoming pancreatic disorder.

Pancreatic panniculitis represents a rare dermatological manifestation mainly due to a pancreatic disorder, but other etiologies are possible. Even rarer, it can occur prior to the clinical signs of the underlying disease, and its presence must orientate the investigations especially towards pancreas, liver and neuroendocrine system. We report a rare case of a 47-year-old male patient who presented to the Emergency Unit complaining about a two weeks-long-persistent pain in the upper abdomen and biliary vomiting. The medical history included alcohol abuse. Several days prior to the onset of the

Alveolus soft and bone tissue regeneration after laser biomodulation - a histological study.

Functional and esthetic recovery of the patient after tooth extraction is a concern in the nowadays-dental medicine. Immediate implant placement in fresh sockets in posterior sides of the jaws is difficult because of the high amount of bone loss and the disparity between the diameter of the alveolus and the implant. The objective is to evaluate the effect of laser biomodulation alveolar socket healing process of healthy patients. A number of 36 molars have been extracted due to advanced caries lesions from the same dental arch but on opposite sites. Laser irradiation was performed on one side

Ovarian hydatid cyst - systematic review of clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of an unusual entity.

Primary ovarian hydatid disease (HD) is a rare entity, produced by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. HD commonly involves liver, lung, abdomen cavity, spleen and is unusually identified in pelvic organs. Based on our knowledge, the paper reviews 27 literature reports of ovarian HD, diagnosed during the last 20 years, providing a valuable database. Patients' ages ranged between 12-76 years, the gross appearance was that of 40-330 mm diameter hydatid cysts (HCs), 66.66% of them being primary. According to these reports, ovarian HD has non-specific clinical manifestations, such as abdo
