Rapid Epidemiological Data Collection on Social Media for COVID-19: Comparative Study Between Online Surveys and Conventional Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: After COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020, global responses relied on nonpharmaceutical interventions such as physical distancing and mask mandates. These measures were guided by mathematical models built on empirical data. Although traditional methods such as surveys and observational studies provide high-quality data, they are often slow and resource-intensive. Social media polls (SMPs) offer a faster, more cost-effective alternative. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the reliability and biases of SMPs as a rapid supplementa

Prevalence and zoonotic risk factors of Mycobacterium bovis tuberculosis in cattle at the cattle-wildlife-human interface in South and East Cameroon.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a contagious and notifiable disease, which is prevalent in cattle populations of many countries and in several wildlife species worldwide. However, the role of wildlife in the transmission and/or maintenance of bTB at the human-wild animal-animal interface and the epidemiology of zoonotic disease are poorly understood in Cameroon, where many wildlife species exist. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and zoonotic risk factors of bTB at the cattle-wildlife-human interface in the South and East regions of Cameroon. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

GFR measurement in patients with CKD: Performance and feasibility of simplified iohexol plasma clearance techniques.

Implementing shortened one-compartment iohexol plasma clearance models for GFR measurement is crucial since the gold standard inulin renal clearance technique and the reference two-compartment, 10-hour, 16-samplings iohexol plasma clearance method are clinically unfeasible. Inulin may precipitate anaphylactic shock. Four-hour and 8-hour one-compartment iohexol plasma clearance models with Bröchner-Mortensen correction provide accurate GFR measurements in patients with estimated GFR (eGFR) > or ≤40 mL/min/1.73m2, respectively. We compared the performance of the simplified 5-hour, 4-samplings, t

A Novel Method for Classifying Hearing Impairment in Epidemiological Studies of Aging: The Wisconsin Age-Related Hearing Impairment Classification Scale.

Purpose Longitudinal population-based cohort data were used to develop a standardized classification system for age-related hearing impairment using thresholds for frequencies (0.5-8 kHz) typically measured in cohort studies. Method Audiometric testing data collected in the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study from participants (n = 1,369) with four visits (1993-1995, 1998-2000, 2003-2005, and 2009-2010) were included (10,952 audiograms). Cluster analyses (Wald's method) were used to identify audiometric patterns. Maximum allowable threshold values were defined for each cluster to create an orde

Prospective Cohort Study of Uterine Fibroids and Miscarriage Risk.

We sought to determine the relationship of fibroids to pregnancy loss in a prospective cohort in which fibroid status was uniformly documented in early pregnancy. Participants had an intake interview, transvaginal ultrasonography, computer-assisted telephone interview, and follow-up assessment of outcomes. We recruited diverse participants for the Right From the Start study from 8 metropolitan areas in 3 states in the United States during 2000-2012. Participants were at least 18 years of age, trying to become pregnant or at less than 12 weeks' gestation, not using fertility treatments, fluent

Misclassification in assessment of diabetogenic risk using electronic health records.

PURPOSE: Suspected diabetogenic effects or drug indication may increase testing for diabetes mellitus (DM), resulting in measurement bias when evaluating diabetogenic drug effects. We sought to evaluate the validity of electronic health record data in determining DM risk. METHODS: We used time-dependent Cox proportional hazard models within a retrospective cohort design to assess associations between use of antihypertensives, statins, atypical antipsychotics, and antidepressants, and two endpoints: (i) DM onset defined as fasting blood glucose (BG) ≥126 mg/dl, random BG ≥200 mg/dl, HbA1c ≥7.0

p.Ser1235Arg should no longer be considered as a cystic fibrosis mutation: results from a large collaborative study.

Among the 1700 mutations reported in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, a missense mutation, p.Ser1235Arg, is a relatively frequent finding. To clarify its clinical significance, we collected data from 104 subjects heterozygous for the mutation p.Ser1235Arg from the French CF network, addressed for various indications including classical CF, atypical phenotypes or carrier screening in subjects with or without a family history. Among them, 26 patients (5 having CF, 10 CBAVD (congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens) and 11 with CF-like symptoms) and 14

Hematological changes in hospital workers due to chronic exposure to low levels of ethylene oxide.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine whether occupational exposure to low levels of ethylene oxide can cause hematological abnormalities. Blood samples were collected from a group of 47 hospital workers who were exposed to ethylene oxide during a mean period of 6.6 years (standard error, 1.1). Ethylene oxide range levels measured were < 0.01 to 0.06 ppm. The control group, individually matched by age, sex, and smoking habits, consisted of 88 workers from the administrative sector. We found significant differences between the exposed and the control group in the frequency of worker

A new method for dental age estimation in adults.

Several statistical methods have been proposed for estimation of age from teeth in human adults. Due to the smallness of the material or statistical shortcomings in previous reports, improvements of the methods were desirable and seemed possible. As a contribution to such improvement various age-related changes have been studied in a material of 1000 teeth. For each type of change the kind of measurement most strongly related to age was chosen, and a multiple regression analysis was run with age as the dependent variable, using SPSS/PC+ statistical program. Statistically significant formulae w

Global Warming and Type 2 Diabetes: Sex and Gender as Drivers in a Multidimensional Feedback Loop.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a determinant of metabolic health. Emerging evidence indicates that rising temperatures impair glucose homeostasis-specifically through reduced brown adipose tissue activity and increased insulin resistance-thereby exacerbating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk. Concurrently, food systems drive substantial greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), with gender-differentiated dietary patterns uniquely influencing both environmental impact and health outcomes. In this perspective, we move beyond well-established separate links to propose an original integrat

Brucellosis in healthcare settings: research advances in nosocomial infection prevention and control.

Brucellosis, a globally significant zoonosis, poses substantial but often underappreciated risks within healthcare and allied professional environments. This narrative review synthesizes current research advances in the prevention and control of nosocomial and occupational brucellosis, addressing a critical gap in the existing literature that has predominantly focused on community-acquired transmission. We examine seven key dimensions: laboratory-acquired brucellosis and biosafety lapses; occupational exposure risks among healthcare workers, veterinarians, and abattoir personnel; epidemiology

An overview of the progress made in research into the Mpox virus.

Mpox is a zoonotic illness caused by the Mpox virus (MPXV), a member of the Orthopoxvirus family. Although a few cases have been reported outside Africa, it was originally regarded as an endemic disease limited to African countries. However, the Mpox outbreak of 2022 was remarkable in that the infection spread to more than 123 countries worldwide, causing thousands of infections and deaths. The ongoing Mpox outbreak has been declared as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. For a better management and control of the epidemic, this review summarize

From Snoot to Tail: A Brief Review of Influenza Virus Infection and Immunity in Pigs.

Pigs play an important role in influenza A virus (IAV) epidemiology because they support replication of human, avian, and swine origin viruses and act as an IAV reservoir for pigs and other species, including humans. Moreover, novel IAVs with human pandemic potential may be generated in pigs. To minimize the threat of IAVs to human and swine health, it is crucial to understand host defense mechanisms that restrict viral replication and pathology in pigs. In this article, we review IAV strains circulating in the North American swine population, as well as porcine innate and acquired immune resp

The Quality of Life in Cancer Patients

Cancer is a disease mainly caused by uncontrolled division of body cells in any part in the human body. Cancer is epidemiologically one of major non communicable disease and considered to be main health issue in the community across the world. In medicine, we are often interested in how disease or its treatment affects quality of life (QOL), which is generally considered health-related quality of life. All cancer patients should be subjected to attain all dimensions of quality of life i.e. Physical, Mental, Social & Functional Health. QOL is not easy to measure but despite this, there are many

Phylogeographic Aspects of Bat Lyssaviruses in Europe: A Review.

During the last few decades, bat lyssaviruses have become the topic of intensive molecular and epidemiological investigations. Since ancient times, rhabdoviruses have caused fatal encephalitis in humans which has led to research into effective strategies for their eradication. Modelling of potential future cross-species virus transmissions forms a substantial component of the recent infection biology of rabies. In this article, we summarise the available data on the phylogeography of both bats and lyssaviruses in Europe and the adjacent reg ions, especially in the contact zone between the Pale

Development of New Technologies for Risk Identification of Schistosomiasis Transmission in China.

Schistosomiasis is serious parasitic disease with an estimated global prevalence of active infections of more than 190 million. Accurate methods for the assessment of schistosomiasis risk are crucial for schistosomiasis prevention and control in China. Traditional approaches to the identification of epidemiological risk factors include pathogen biology, immunology, imaging, and molecular biology techniques. Identification of schistosomiasis risk has been revolutionized by the advent of computer network communication technologies, including 3S, mathematical modeling, big data, and artificial in

Screening and management of atrial fibrillation in primary care.

Atrial fibrillation is a common chronic disease seen in primary care offices, emergency departments, inpatient hospital services, and many subspecialty practices. Atrial fibrillation care is complicated and multifaceted, and, at various points, clinicians may see it as a consequence and cause of multi-morbidity, as a silent driver of stroke risk, as a bellwether of an acute medical illness, or as a primary rhythm disturbance that requires targeted treatment. Primary care physicians in particular must navigate these priorities, perspectives, and resources to meet the needs of individual patient
