Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) burden has been identified to cause multiorgan damage. Respiratory compromise is still one of the most common presentations, but cardiac injuries like myocardial injury, ischemia, and conduction abnormalities are also becoming prevalent. We present a case of an 87-year-old male with a history of dementia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and a left kidney transplant hospitalized for respiratory distress and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. He was bradycardic to 27 beats per minute, hypotensive with mean arterial pressure <60

Alpinia zerumbet is a plant from the Zingiberaceae family, popularly used for hypertension treatment. Several studies have demonstrated Alpinia zerumbet vasodilator effect on conductance vessels but not on resistance vessels. Thereby, the aim of this study was to verify the vasodilator effect of the essential oil of Alpinia zerumbet (EOAz) on isolated rat resistance arteries and characterize its mechanism of action. Therefore, the effect of EOAz (3 to 3000 μg/mL) was verified in second-order branches of the mesenteric artery (SOBMA) pre-contracted by KCl and U46619. To study the mechanism of a

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), which is considered the most common genetic form of obesity, results from the absence of imprinted genes in the paternally derived PWS critical region located on chromosome 15q11.2-13. Infants with PWS exhibit poor sucking, neonatal hypotonia, and delayed motor milestones. These patients begin to experience hyperphagia and obesity from 2 to 3 years of age. PWS is a multisystemic disorder, and its clinical manifestations include developmental delay/intellectual disability, behavioral problems, dysmorphic facial features, short stature, scoliosis, and endocrine abnor

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is associated with endothelial cell dysfunction. E-selectin is an endothelial cell adhesion molecule, which is bound for endothelial cell activation. E-selectin gene+A561C polymorphism is associated with many different disorders: essential hypertension, stroke, angina pectoris, coronary heart disease, etc. But the association with type 2 diabetes remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of E-selectin gene+A561C polymorphism and soluble E-selectin in type 2 diabetes in a Chinese population.
METHODS: This study involved 317 patients with type 2 diabetes …

Background The supply-demand mismatch between organ donor and patient waiting for transplant has led to the growth of transplant tourism. This type of transplant is considered unethical and illegal, as it is usually performed in poor environments and carries a higher risk of infectious, vascular, and immunological complications. Methods In this single-centered retrospective cohort study, we compared patients who underwent transplant tourism to patients who were transplanted locally and followed up in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2018. Result A total of 254 local transplants an

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by endothelial dysfunction, uncontrolled proliferation and migration of pulmonary arterial endothelial cells leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance resulting in great morbidity and poor survival. Bone morphogenetic protein receptor II (BMPR2) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of PAH as the most common genetic mutation. Non-muscle myosin light chain kinase (nmMLCK) is an essential component of the cellular cytoskeleton and recent studies have shown that increased nmMLCK activity regulates biological processes in variou

Approximately 4% of subjects aged 75 years or more have clinically relevant tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Primary TR results from anatomical abnormality of the tricuspid valve apparatus and is observed in only 8-10% of the patients with tricuspid valve disease. Secondary TR is more common and arises as a result of annular dilation caused by right ventricular enlargement and dysfunction as a consequence of pulmonary hypertension, often caused by left-sided heart disease or atrial fibrillation. Irrespective of its aetiology, TR leads to volume overload and increased wall stress, both of which ne

Two major obstetric diseases, preeclampsia (PE), a pregnancy-induced endothelial dysfunction leading to hypertension and proteinuria, and intra-uterine growth-restriction (IUGR), a failure of the fetus to acquire its normal growth, are generally triggered by placental dysfunction. Many studies have evaluated gene expression deregulations in these diseases, but none has tackled systematically the role of alternative splicing. In the present study, we show that alternative splicing is an essential feature of placental diseases, affecting 1060 and 1409 genes in PE vs controls and IUGR vs controls

Approximately 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications around the world every day, 99% of which occur in developing countries. In majority of cases deaths are related to pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. The purpose of new adjusted and simplified IAPM guidelines is specifically lowering maternal mortality by decreasing preventable deaths in developing countries (particularly in remote rural areas) by using rather cheap medicines used to control chronic and gestational hypertension, prevent pre-eclampsia in high-risk pregnancies and treat severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. I

Chikungunya has re-emerged as an epidemic with global distribution and high morbidity, necessitating the need for effective therapeutics. We utilized already approved drugs with a good safety profile used in other diseases for their new property of anti-chikungunya activity. It provides a base for a fast and efficient approach to bring a novel therapy from bench to bedside by the process of drug-repositioning. We utilized an in-silico drug screening with FDA approved molecule library to identify inhibitors of the chikungunya nsP2 protease, a multifunctional and essential non-structural protein

The use of point of care ultrasound to assess cardiovascular function performed by a neonatologist who is not a cardiologist, is gaining interest in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Clinical signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and capillary refill time provide limited insight into the adequacy of systemic blood flow and organ perfusion. Functional echocardiography (echo) enables real time evaluation of cardiac performance, identifying the nature of cardiovascular compromise, guiding therapeutic decisions and monitoring response to treatment. Application of functional echo in the N

BACKGROUND: In women of reproductive age, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) constitutes the most frequent endocrine disorder. Women with PCOS are considered to typically belong to an age and sex group which is at lower risk for severe COVID-19.
MAIN BODY: Emerging data link the risk of severe COVID-19 with certain factors such as hyper-inflammation, ethnicity predisposition, low vitamin D levels, and hyperandrogenism, all of which have known direct associations with PCOS. Moreover, in this common female patient population, there is markedly high prevalence of multiple cardio-metabolic conditio

UNLABELLED: Phenylketonuria (PKU), the most common inborn error of amino acid metabolism, has been associated with an increased risk of renal impairment, the reason for which is not fully understood. We report the case of a 33-year-old female patient diagnosed with PKU in adulthood after suspicion of the disease in her daughter. The diagnostic approach revealed proteinuria, and minimal change disease (MCD) was identified. Therapeutic measures and follow-up are discussed. The possible link between these two disorders is interesting. Attenuated developmental delay of untreated PKU could be expla

While malignant mesothelioma may initially present in a variety of ways, it is uncommon to present with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) seropositivity and thus obscuring its diagnosis. Our case involves a 75-year-old Caucasian male with a past medical history of essential hypertension, remote prostate cancer status post prostatectomy, and lifetime nontobacco use presenting with progressive shortness of breath over one month. After a negative cardiac assessment, a postcardiac catheterization chest X-ray (CXR) revealed a right-sided moderate-to-large pleural effusion that, on further workup, …

BACKGROUND: The commonly used methods for amyloid typing include immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry (IHC), which sometimes may come with diagnostic pitfalls. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics has been recognized as a reliable technique in amyloid typing.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported two middle-aged patients who presented with proteinuria, hypertension and normal renal function, and both had a family history of renal diseases. The renal biopsies of both patients revealed renal amyloidosis with the similar pattern by massive exclusively glomerular amyloid deposition. The IHC was
