Does the Utilization of Allograft Tissue in Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction in Pediatric and Adolescent Patients Restore Patellar Stability?

BACKGROUND: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is one of several surgical procedures used to treat patellofemoral instability. Use of allograft tissue can preserve autogenous tissue and may be preferable in patients with connective tissue disorders or ligamentous laxity. Although there are successful reports in adults, it is unclear if the use of allograft tissue in MPFL reconstruction can restore patellofemoral stability in children and adolescents. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does allograft tissue in MPFL reconstruction in pediatric and adolescent patients restore patellar sta

Fractures of the proximal radius in children: management and results of 100 consecutive cases.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric radial neck and head fractures are rare, accounting for only 1% of all fractures in children. The aim of this study is to describe the management and results of the respective fracture types and different injury characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study performs a retrospective data analysis of 100 consecutive patients with a fracture of the proximal radius treated in a single high-volume pediatric trauma center. RESULTS: One hundred patients [mean age 7.5 years (1-15)] were documented with a fracture of the proximal radius between 3/2011 and 12/2019. The gen

The long-term outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of stable displaced isolated partial articular fractures of the radial head.

BACKGROUND: Excellent long-term results have been reported for nonoperative treatment of stable isolated displaced partial articular (Mason 2) fractures of the radial head, suggesting that the role of operative treatment can be questioned. This investigation reports the long-term outcome of operatively treated Mason 2 radial head fractures. METHODS: Sixteen patients with stable displaced partial articular (Mason 2) fractures of the radial head not associated with fracture or dislocation of the proximal forearm were evaluated an average of 22 years (range, 14-30 years) after open reduction and

Salmon calcitonin nasal spray treatment for postmenopausal women after hip fracture with total hip arthroplasty.

The increasing rate of hip fractures is giving rise to a number of socioeconomic problems for the aging community. In addition to being unable to resume their previous living habits, many patients fail to achieve full functional recovery after the fractures. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful operation for the majority of patients with all forms of hip fractures. Dislocation and aseptic loosening are the major reasons for revisions. An additional problem post-THA is the rate of heterotopic soft tissue calcification after total hip arthroplasty, resulting in severely impaired function

Does the c.-14C>T Mutation in the IFITM5 Gene Provide Identical Phenotypes for Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type V? Data from Russia and a Literature Review.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a large group of genetically heterogeneous diseases resulting from decreased bone density and an abnormal microarchitecture, which are clinically manifested by abnormal bone fractures. A distinctive clinical feature of this group of diseases is the presence of spontaneous fractures and skeletal deformities. However, the clinical manifestations of different types of OI are characterized by marked polymorphism with variable severity of skeletal and extra-skeletal features. Previous studies have shown that a mutation (c.-14C>T) in the IFITM5 gene is responsible for

Arthroscopic reconstruction of an isolated avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity.

Isolated avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity represents an extremely rare injury that occurs mainly in younger patients. This report outlines the case of a 35-year-old healthy man who sustained a bony avulsion of the subscapularis tendon during an abduction external rotation trauma to his left shoulder. The injury was diagnosed by physical examination, standard radiographs, and magnetic resonance imaging. An arthroscopic reconstruction including closed reduction and internal fixation using suture anchors was performed. After a follow-up of 6 months, the patient's Constant Score increase

[The dynamic treatment of intraarticular fractures of the base of the middle phalanx with the Suzuki dynamic fixator].

Between 1994 and 1998, we have treated eleven patients with intraarticular fractures of the base of the middle phalanx including impaction, dislocation, and pilon types of injuries. All patients were evaluated after a median follow-up period of 25.8 (8 to 57) months. Treatment was carried out according to Suzuki's technique with a dynamic PIP-joint distraction fixator consisting of Kirschner wires and rubber bands. In five cases, there was additional osteosynthesis (Kirschner wires, resorbable hemicerclage) or cancellous bone-grafting for reconstruction of the joint surface. Early mobilisation

Fingertip injuries.

The family physician often provides the first and only medical intervention for fingertip injuries. Proper diagnosis and management of fingertip injuries are vital to maintaining proper function of the hand and preventing permanent disability. A subungual hematoma is a painful condition that involves bleeding beneath the nail, usually after trauma. Treatment requires subungual decompression, which is achieved by creating small holes in the nail. A nail bed laceration is treated by removing the nail and suturing the injured nail bed. Closed fractures of the distal phalanx may require reduction

[Long-term outcome of surgically treated orbital floor fractures. Apropos of a series of 242 patients].

Over a period extending from January 1993 to December 1995, we treated 242 patients with 268 orbital floor fractures in our department. Surgical indications were broad and relied on clinical criteria (enophthalmos, diplopia, hypoesthesia) and/or CT analysis (bony collapse, extrusion of orbital contents, suspicion of muscular entrapment, dislocation of the infraorbital rim). Two years after surgery, 91% of the patients showed good results (absence of diplopia or severe enophthalmos). The analysis of these results points out that the degree of sequelar enophthamos was not only related to the deg
