Osmotically rupturable systems were developed and the release of cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride (model drug) from the systems was investigated. Systems were designed using mannitol (osmotic agent) and increasing amounts of polyethylene oxide (PEO, a water-swellable polymer) surrounded by a semipermeable membrane. Glycerol fermentation by Enterobacter agglomerans revealed that both growth and 1,3-propanediol production ceased after consumption of about 430 mM glycerol, irrespective of the initial glycerol content. This phenomenon was assigned to the production of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, which was identified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and which showed a bacteriostatic effect. The accumulation during glycerol fermentation was also observed with two other enterobacterial species, i.e., Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate tolerance and diagnostic yield of colonoscopy in elderly patients.
METHODS: We studied retrospectively 200 consecutive colonoscopies performed in patients older than 80 years (mean age: 83.5 +/- 3.1). We analyzed the following factors: indication, type and tolerance of the preparation, analgesia, tolerance of the procedure, information provided by the examination and therapeutic consequences.

A series of glycolamide, glycolate, (acyloxy)methyl, alkyl, and aryl esters of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) were synthesized and evaluated as potential prodrug forms of aspirin. N,N-Disubstituted glycolamide esters were found to be rapidly hydrolyzed in human plasma, resulting in the formation of aspirin as well as the corresponding salicylate esters. Effects of detergents--triton X-100 and deoxycholate--on the main respiratory chain and cyanide-resistant electron transfer pathway in the mitochondria of Candida lipolytica yeast were studied.
