Diet and Dental Disease in Exotic Companion Mammals.

Diet is essential for dental health, yet diets chosen by humans for pets often do not conform to state-of-the-art recommendations. For many animals, non-natural diets high in easily digestible carbohydrates from cultivated fruit, colored vegetables, cereals/grains and derived products including cereal-based compound feeds, represent risk factors for reduced chewing activity, oral dysbiosis, caries and periodontitis; if not supplemented, also disturbances of the calcium/phosphorus metabolism. In rabbits and rodents, with teeth that have the permanent capacity for controlled compensatory regrowt

The Role of Wnt5a in Inflammatory Diseases.

Wnt5a plays an important role in cell development and maturation and is closely associated with various diseases, such as malignant tumours, metabolic disorders, fibrosis, growth and development. Recent studies have shown that Wnt5a expression and signal transduction are strongly involved in the inflammatory response. This study comprehensively reviewed the latest research progress on the association between Wnt5a and several inflammatory diseases, such as sepsis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis and psoriasis vulgare. We elucid

Update on Preeclampsia and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

There have been recent advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy which complicate approximately 16% of pregnancies in the United States. Initiation of low-dose aspirin by 16 weeks' gestation reduces preeclampsia in high-risk women. The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1/placental growth factor ratio for the short-term prediction of preeclampsia. Pregnancy outcomes are improved in women with chronic hypertension when antihypertensives are initiated at a threshold blood pressure of 140/90 mm H

Whole-Body Mouse Fluxomic Analysis to Detect Metabolic Disruptions Associated with Microcephaly: Using 13C Isotopes.

Diverse metabolic disorders can disrupt brain growth, and analyzing metabolism in animal models of microcephaly may reveal new mechanisms of pathogenesis. The metabolism of functioning cells in a living organism is constantly changing in response to a changing environment, circadian rhythms, consumed food, drugs, progressing sicknesses, aging, and many other factors. Metabolic profiling can give important insights into the working machinery of the cell. However, a frozen snapshot of the interconnected, complex network of reactions gives very limited information about this system. Flux analysis

Fetal cardiac function evaluation: A review.

The aim of this review is to provide an up to date on the current use of fetal echocardiography in assessing the fetal cardiac function and its potential research and clinical applications. Despite classically is been used for prenatal diagnosis of fetal heart defects, assessment of fetal cardiac function has been recently proposed as a fundamental tool to assess pregnancies complicated by several disorders with long-term impact on post-natal cardiovascular health, such as placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction. In this review we present anatomical and functional fetal cardiac de

MicroRNAs in Huntington's Disease: Diagnostic Biomarkers or Therapeutic Agents?

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a non-coding single-stranded small molecule of approximately 21 nucleotides. It degrades or inhibits the translation of RNA by targeting the 3'-UTR. The miRNA plays an important role in the growth, development, differentiation, and functional execution of the nervous system. Dysregulated miRNA expression has been associated with several pathological processes of neurodegenerative disorders, including Huntington's disease (HD). Recent studies have suggested promising roles of miRNAs as biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for HD. Here, we review the emerging role of

To increase body height and muscle strength - one medicine for two diseases? Case report of a boy with Silver-Russell syndrome and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The coexistence of 2 genetic diseases can mutually modify their course. We describe the case of a 10-year-old boy with Sliver-Russell syndrome (SRS) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The patient's short stature, which is part of the clinical picture of both diseases, has been additionally aggravated by the steroid therapy, which is necessary to delay the progression of DMD. From the age of 9 years, the patient was treated with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) for 18 months. The following study discusses whether rhGH therapy in a child with SRS and DMD may alleviate or worsen the co

Growth Hormone and the Auditory Pathway: Neuromodulation and Neuroregeneration.

Growth hormone (GH) plays an important role in auditory development during the embryonic stage. Exogenous agents such as sound, noise, drugs or trauma, can induce the release of this hormone to perform a protective function and stimulate other mediators that protect the auditory pathway. In addition, GH deficiency conditions hearing loss or central auditory processing disorders. There are promising animal studies that reflect a possible regenerative role when exogenous GH is used in hearing impairments, demonstrated in in vivo and in vitro studies, and also, even a few studies show beneficial

Carpal tunnel syndrome in paediatric patients: A novel association with Kosaki overgrowth syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome in a paediatric population is vanishingly rare and usually associated with lysosomal storage disorders such as mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). Overgrowth syndromes similarly are rare and are characterised by increased skeletal growth alongside typical dysmorphic features and intellectual delay and as such the acronym OGID (overgrowth intellectual delay) is now widely used. Kosaki overgrowth syndrome (KOGS) is a newly recognised OGID with only 6 cases to date reported in the literature. Here we report a 7th case of KOGS with a new finding of carpal tunnel syndrome not previo

[Evaluation and management of infectious esophagitis in immunocompromised patients and immunocompetent individuals].

Among the many causes of the inflammatory process in the esophagus, infectious diseases are becoming increasingly important due to their steady growth. Previously esophageal infections have traditionally been associated with immunodeficiency syndromes, but now in clinical practice, these disorders are becoming increasingly recognized in immunocompetent individuals. Early diagnosis of infectious esophagitis is necessary to develop effective treatment tactics, and, as a result, reduce the risk of complications and adverse outcomes of the disease. This study reviewed the most clinical relevant pa

Reduction glossectomy of congenital macroglossia due to lymphangioma.

Macroglossia is a rare clinical condition defined as an enlarged tongue. Macroglossia can cause structural deformities like diastema and disproportionate mandibular growth and present functional disorders such as dysarthria, dysphonia, and respiratory problems. A 7-year-old boy who had lymphangiomatous macroglossia was treated with a reduction glossectomy by anchor-shaped combination of a U-shape and modified key-hole resection. Postoperatively, the reduced tongue was contained completely within the oral cavity, but open bite remained due to prognathism. Sensory and motor nerves to the tongue

Coronary Artery Ectasia-A Review of Current Literature.

Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is one of the uncommon cardiovascular disorders. Its incidence ranges from 1.2%-4.9%. Coronary artery ectasia likely represents an exaggerated form of expansive vascular remodeling (i.e. excessive expansive remodeling) in response to atherosclerotic plaque growth with atherosclerosis being the most common cause. Although, it has been described more than five decades ago, its management is still debated. We therefore reviewed the literature until date by searching PubMed and Google scholar using key words "coronary artery ectasia", "coronary artery aneurysm", "path

Exploring the genetic basis of 3MC syndrome: Findings in 12 further families.

The 3MC syndromes are a group of rare autosomal recessive disorders where the main clinical features are cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism, highly arched eyebrows, caudal appendage, postnatal growth deficiency, and genitourinary tract anomalies. Ophthalmological abnormalities, most notably anterior chamber defects may also be seen. We describe the clinical and molecular findings in 13 individuals with suspected 3MC syndrome from 12 previously unreported families. The exclusion of the MASP1 and COLEC11 Loci in two individuals from different consanguineous families and the absence of mutations

Reconstruction of a Nose Bitten and Eaten by a Dog: A Ten-Year Follow-up of a Bitten-Off Nose Replantation Performed on an Eleven-Year-Old Boy.

The nose is one of the most important aesthetic units of the face. After a traumatic amputation, replantation is undoubtedly the procedure of choice, although, technically, very challenging. We report the 10-year follow-up of a partially digested nose replantation after a dog-bite in an 11-year-old boy using supermicrosurgery technique. Our report confirms that the microsurgical replantation of the nose can lead to an acceptable aesthetic result, with the sufficient growth of the replanted part in the following years. Besides the patient did not report sensibility disorders. The nose replantat

[Abnormal Proliferation and Differentiation of Hematopoietic Cells in Myelodysplastic Syndrome Patients].

Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) is a group of clonal disorders of hematopoietic stem cells characterized by peripheral cytopenia, ineffective hematopoiesis, morphologically apparent multilineage dysplasia, and enhanced risk of evolution towards acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Most of the research findings have verified the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic cells in MDS. The defects of cellular and molecular factors such as transcription factors (GATA-1~GATA-3, FOG1, Pu.1), growth factors (Epo, G-CSF, GM-CSF) and anti-apoptosis genes ultimately affect the cell cycle regul

Combined choroidal neovascularization and hypopituitarism in a patient with homozygous mutation in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene.

We report a case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene mutation in a 20-year-old male patient with hypopituitarism. Treatment with three consecutive injections of intravitreal ranibizumab (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor) resulted in significant improvement of the patient's vision and the appearance of the macula. A search of the literature produced no previously reported case of MTHFR gene mutation associated both CNV and possibly hypopituitarism. With hormone replacement therapy of hypopituitarism, acetyl salicylic acid 10

The role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β in modulating the immune response and fibrogenesis in the gut.

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, a pleiotropic cytokine released by both immune and non-immune cells in the gut, exerts an important tolerogenic action by promoting regulatory T cell differentiation. TGF-β also enhances enterocyte migration and regulates extracellular matrix turnover, thereby playing a crucial role in tissue remodeling in the gut. In this review we describe the mechanisms by which abnormal TGF-β signaling impairs intestinal immune tolerance and tissue repair, thus predisposing to the onset of immune-mediated bowel disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease and celiac dis

Clinical, cytogenetic and molecular characterization of two cases of mosaic ring chromosome 13.

The occurrence of mosaic ring chromosome 13 is rare. The mechanism of ring chromosome formation is usually associated with loss of genetic material. We report 2 cases of mosaic ring chromosome 13, resulting in deletion of 13qter. The first patient, a 15 year-old boy, presented a delayed psychomotor development, mental retardation, dysmorphic features and bleeding disorders associated with a de novo terminal 13q34 deletion. The second case was a foetus of 31 weeks with prenatal diagnosis of severe malformation such as holoprosencephaly, congenital cardiac defects, gastro-intestinal abnormalitie

Prenatal Diagnosis of Lethal Multiple Pterygium Syndrome Using Two-and Three-Dimensional Ultrasonography.

Lethal multiple pterygium (LMP) is a series of disorders of fetal formation with a heterogeneous range of manifestations that generally include cystic hygroma, pulmonary hypoplasia, cleft palate, cryptorchidism, joint contractures, fetal akinesia, heart defects, growth restriction, and intestinal malrotation. The prenatal diagnosis of this syndrome is suspected when two-dimensional ultrasound (2DUS) scan shows several malformations.. The three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) in rendering mode permits the spatial visualization of these malformations, allowing better understanding of this anomaly
