Oral health literacy among adult patients seeking dental care.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the association of knowledge, dental care visits and oral health status with oral health literacy in dental patients. METHODS: The authors administered to adult patients in two private dental offices the short version of the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry-30 (REALD-30), a word-recognition test. An interview provided primary predictor variables for REALD-30 and variables that would serve as controls in multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: About 29 percent of the sample scored below 22 on the 30-point test, a score that the authors

Ethnophysiology and contraceptive use among low-income women in urban Brazil.

Distrust and dissatisfaction with contraceptive methods among low-income Brazilian women contributes to incorrect contraceptive use, harmful health risks, and an extensive reliance on surgical sterilization. Data from ethnographic fieldwork in a low-income neighborhood in urban Brazil illustrate that women's concerns regarding contraception make sense in the context of their general health and illness beliefs and their understanding of reproductive physiology. Women interpret and experience biomedical concepts and contraceptive methods (such as "hormones" and oral contraceptives, respectively)

Slip! Slop! Slap! and SunSmart, 1980-2000: Skin cancer control and 20 years of population-based campaigning.

The Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria has been running sun protection programs for more than 20 years: Slip! Slop! Slap! from 1980 to 1988 and SunSmart from 1988 to the present. The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation has provided funding for the SunSmart program for the past 13 years. These programs have played an important role in changing the whole society's approach to the sun and have resulted in marked reductions in sun exposure. This article describes the social, political, economic, and organizational context within which these programs developed. Then 10 areas are discussed that illus

Factors related to self-efficacy for use of condoms and birth control among women at risk for HIV infection.

Many women who are at risk for HIV do not regularly use condoms, particularly with their main partners. In this paper we examine factors related to self-efficacy for condom use with main and other partners and self-efficacy for birth control in 2864 women interviewed in five urban high-risk communities. Limited social and economic resources, dependence on a main partner, and risk factors, including exchanging sex for money or drugs and binge drinking, were found to be negatively related to self-efficacy. Segmentation analysis identified groups of women with low self-efficacy who should be the

Impact of health education on knowledge and prevention behavior for congenital toxoplasmosis: the experience in Poznań, Poland.

In 1991-1997 educational activities were undertaken in the Poznań region of Poland to promote health education for the prevention of toxoplasmosis. The effect of education was measured in 2710 pregnant women by a questionnaire survey. Knowledge of toxoplasmosis and its prevention was almost doubled within 4 years. Similarly, the proportion of women having antenatal serological tests for toxoplasmosis significantly increased. In the examined population the knowledge of how Toxoplasma gondii is transmitted/acquired was better than the knowledge of individual risk factors for congenital toxoplasm

AIDS and condoms in Brasilia: a telephone survey.

A telephone survey was conducted to measure AIDS knowledge, media usage and condom attitudes and behaviors among 500 adults aged 18 to 49 in Brasilia, as well as to evaluate the feasibility of the telephone survey method in a developing country. The response rate was 91.6%. Respondents had good knowledge about correct modes of HIV transmission and prevention but also believed HIV was transmitted through blood donation, public toilets, swimming pools, and mosquito bites. TV and newspapers were the most important sources of information on health matters and AIDS, though health workers were consi

Evaluation of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of Compulsory Rotating Medical Interns in Managing Obstetric Emergencies in a Tertiary Hospital.

Background Obstetric emergencies such as postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), eclampsia, and shoulder dystocia remain major causes of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. The preparedness of frontline providers, including Compulsory Rotatory Medical Interns (CRMIs), is critical in preventing avoidable maternal deaths. Simulation-based obstetric emergency training has demonstrated global success in improving clinical competence; however, structured evaluation of interns' readiness in Indian tertiary settings remains limited. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude

Knowledge and attitudes are important factors in farmers' choice of lamb tail docking length.

BACKGROUND: Tail docking is common practice in the sheep industry to prevent soiling of the breech and flystrike. To ensure optimal healing after tail docking and reduce the risk of arthritis, perineal cancers and prolapses, it is recommended to dock tails equivalent to the length of the vulva. However, recent studies have found that some tails are docked too short (24-86 per cent). METHODS: To address this issue, this study aimed to identify key drivers behind tail docking length decisions. Two focus groups, phone (n=30) and online surveys (n=21) were conducted in regional Victoria, Australi

Antimicrobial resistance awareness and associated factors among family physicians in Turkey: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat requiring effective antimicrobial stewardship across healthcare systems. This study aimed to assess antimicrobial resistance awareness among family physicians and to examine its association with exposure to national policy initiatives. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional surve
