BACKGROUND: We examined the safety of the routine use of epidural anesthesia by an experienced anesthetic team in a select group of obstetric and gynecologic patients.
METHODS: All anesthetic records and an obstetric department database from 1993 to 2006 were retrospectively reviewed (n = 35,628 cases). Success rate, major complication rates, and mortality rates were the major end-points of the study.

We conducted this study to determine anxiety disorder comorbidity and divalproex sodium use among 26 patients with psychotic disorders after their referral to a partial hospital. Each subject was diagnosed by structured interview, and 4 Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) items associated with agitation were assessed: anxiety, hostility, excitement, and tension. The records of 22 children with parvovirus B19-induced aplastic crisis were reviewed. The group consisted of 16 children with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies and 6 with hereditary spherocytosis. Children presented to the hospital 0.5 to 8 days (mean, 2.4 days) after the onset of symptoms. The children with sickle-cell disease presented earlier (mean, 1.4 days) than did children with hereditary spherocytosis (mean, 5 days; P = 0.02. Patients identified from hospital records as using alprostadil injections for erectile dysfunction were invited to take part in this open crossover study. On alternate weeks eight patients were given intracavernosal needle injections and transdermal needle-free injection of alprostadil in a randomized order. We report our experience and results in the management of Fournier's gangrene. Fournier's gangrene is a synergistic infective necrotizing fasciitis, which involves perianal, perineal and genital regions, originated mostly from colorectal and genitourinary sources. Charts and records from 28 patients with Fournier's gangrene diagnosed between 1993 and 1997 were reviewed. The mean patients age was 57.8 years (range, 22-82 years); mean hospital stay was 19 days. Ten patients with coronary artery fistulae were identified from records at Columbus Children's Hospital between 1974 and 1993. Clinical presentations of patients were quite variable, from 1 day to 20 years of age. Symptoms ranged from none to severe cardiorespiratory failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of valvular pathosis in a population of patients with SLE, to assess the candidacy of such patients for antibiotic prophylaxis before dental treatment.
