Paralytic ileus as a complication of atropine therapy following severe organophosphate poisoning.

A 32-year-old man presented with symptoms of severe organophosphate poisoning and required an atropine infusion for 5 weeks. We believe the development of a paralytic ileus occurred as a rare feature of atropine toxicity when other signs were masked by the underlying condition. The onset of a paralytic ileus coincided with a spontaneous increase in red cell cholinesterase levels and may be an early sign of recovery from organophosphate poisoning.

Alternative methods for the control of sheep scab.

For nearly 17 years, plunge dipping has been the only method of scab control in the UK under a Government-controlled eradication campaign. Dipping is inconvenient and has been incriminated in the post-dipping illness of stockowners and contractors, and the disposal of large volumes of used dipwash is a potential hazard to the environment. Upon the deregulation of sheep scab in July 1992, stockowners are no longer obliged to dip and will seek alternative methods of scab control, ie, systemic injectables or synthetic pyrethroid pour-ons. Plunge dipping still offers the only fully effective metho

Binding of [3H]batrachotoxinin A-20-alpha-benzoate and [3H]saxitoxin to receptor sites associated with sodium channels in trout brain synaptoneurosomes.

1. [3H]Batrachotoxinin A-20-alpha-benzoate ([3H]BTX-B) and [3H]saxitoxin ([3H]STX), radioligands that bind to distinct sites on the voltage-sensitive sodium channel, were bound specifically to saturable sites in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) brain synaptoneurosomes. 2. Specific [3H]BTX-B binding was temperature dependent with highest levels of specific [3H]BTX-B binding observed at 7 degrees C. Specific binding was inversely correlated with assay temperature at temperatures above 7 degrees C. 3. Saturating concentrations of scorpion (Leiurus quinquestriatus) venom (ScV) stimulated specif

Radiometric assay of red cell and plasma cholinesterase in pesticide appliers from Minnesota.

In this study we demonstrate the uses of radiometric assay to detect anticholinesterases in a human population (N = 80) exposed to a broad spectrum of pesticides. The assay is nondilutional. Therefore, anticholinesterase (AChE) agents with low binding affinity can be detected. Our initial results show statistically significant exposure-related decreases in either red cell (AChE) or plasma cholinesterase activity ((butyrl)cholinesterase; BuChE) occurred not only among pesticide appliers who use organophosphates, but also among appliers of the fumigant phosphine. These data extend earlier observ

The New World screw-worm fly in north Africa.

The course of the North African outbreak of New World screw-worm myiasis (Cochliomyia hominivorax) since its discovery in 1988 is described. Chemical and biological control measures are reviewed, including the current progress of the 'sterile male' (SIT) eradication programme.

Effects of agricultural pesticides on humans, animals, and higher plants in developing countries.

Undesirable side effects that result from the indiscriminate use of agricultural pesticides in developing countries are widespread. This has captured the attention of health workers, governments, and environmental protection agencies. In fact, the potential health effects of long-term exposure to humans, animals, and higher plants are of great concern. This study examines the effects of agricultural pesticides on such living forms and explores modes of action, and presents strategies to minimize the deleterious effects of pesticides to living forms in developing countries.

[Mallory-Weiss syndrome in acute poisoning with non-caustic substances].

The authors presented the results of diagnostic and therapeutic esophagogastroduodenoscopy in the Mallory-Weiss syndrome observed in patients with acute ++non-caustic poisoning. Altogether 47 patients were investigated for suspected gastrointestinal bleeding. The Mallory-Weiss syndrome was detected in 20 (42.5%) patients. Therapeutic endoscopic intervention was performed in 5 cases of this syndrome to stop bleeding.

Mechanism of the lethal interaction of chlordecone and CCl4 at non-toxic doses.

There is significant interest in the possibility of unusual toxicity due to interaction of toxic chemicals upon environmental or occupational exposures even though such exposures may involve levels ordinarily considered harmless individually. While many laboratory and experimental models exist for such interactions, progress in this area of toxicology has suffered for want of a model where the interactants are individually non-toxic. We developed such a model where prior exposure to non-toxic levels of the pesticide Kepone (chlordecone) results in a 67-fold amplification of CCl4 lethality in e

[Effect of mineral salts on exotoxin formation and productivity of a Bacillus thuringiensis culture].

The effect of ten mineral salts on the productivity and toxin synthesis was studied in Bacillus thuringiensis IPM-1140. Exotoxin synthesis was stimulated by Zn2+, Mn2+ and NH4+ ions as well as by potassium phosphates. The direct correlation between the number of viable spores and the exotoxin accumulation was disordered at extreme salt concentrations. Optimal salt concentrations in the yeast-polysaccharide medium were found using the method of a fractional factor experiment, which made it possible to increase the productivity of the culture to 5 X 10(9) spores/ml and the yield of the exotoxin

Socio-economic problems related to animal trypanosomiasis in Africa.

Animal trypanosomiasis is one of the major constraints of rural development in Africa. If trypanosomiasis did not exist in these areas, it is estimated that some regions could carry 3-5 times more livestock. Chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis are old methods used to tackle the problem and are still valuable, provided the number of interventions is limited. Tse-tse fly control is a very useful tool to combat trypanosomiasis but expensive. The sterile male release technique is not economically feasible on a wide scale. Immunization or vaccination is not yet available. Trypanotolerance is a biolog

An evaluation of ivermectin in the treatment of sarcoptic mange in dogs.

A colony of mixed-breed dogs (n = 298) naturally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei was treated, twice, with 200 micrograms of ivermectin/kg of body weight subcutaneously at 14-day intervals. After the initial injection, positive skin scrapings from 20 treated dogs decreased from 7 to 1 and the degree of pruritus decreased. In contrast, positive skin scrapings from 22 nontreated dogs increased from 10 to 14, and there was an additional deterioration in the condition of the skin and an increase in the degree of pruritus. Complete control was noticed in all treated dogs by posttreatment day 28 (14

Efficacy of ivermectin against the mange mite Sarcoptes scabiei var suis in pigs.

The efficacy of ivermectin administered by esophageal intubation in a single dose was evaluated against the mange mite Sarcoptes scabiei var suis in 24 naturally infested pigs. Six pigs were allocated to each of the 4 treatment groups. Control (group 1) pigs were given nonmedicated water, group 2 were given ivermectin at 300 micrograms/kg of body weight, group 3 were given ivermectin at 400 micrograms/kg, and group 4 were given ivermectin at 500 micrograms/kg. The pigs were examined for S scabiei before treatment and on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 after treatment. Of the 18 ivermectin-treated pigs,

Amitraz--(TAKTIC) for the control of pig mange.

The efficiency of amitraz (TAKTIC) on pig mange was evaluated. Controlled trials as well as a field trial document the high acaricidal activity of the product.
