Physiological evidence of integrin-antibody reactive proteins influencing the innate cellular immune responses of larval Galleria mellonella hemocytes.

Larval Galleria mellonella (L.) hemocytes form microaggregates in response to stimulation by Gram-positive bacteria. Hemocyte adhesion to foreign materials is mediated by the cAMP/ protein kinase A pathway and the β-subunit of cholera toxin using a cAMP-independent mechanism. Cholera toxin-induced microaggregation was inhibited by the integrin inhibitory RGDS peptide, implying integrins may be part of the mechanism. Based on the types of mammalian integrin-antibody reactive proteins affecting hemocyte adhesion and bacterial-induced responses α5 , αv , β1 , and β3 subunits occurred on both gran…

The Curious Case of Achromobacter eurydice, a Gram-Variable Pleomorphic Bacterium Associated with European Foulbrood Disease in Honeybees.

Honeybees are prone to parasite and pathogen infestations/infections due to their social colony life. Bacterial pathogens in particular lead to destructive infections of the brood. European foulbrood is caused by the bacterium Melissococcus plutonius in combination with several other Gram-positive bacteria (Achromobacter eurydice, Bacillus pumilus, Brevibacillus laterosporus, Enterococcus faecalis, Paenibacillus alvei, Paenibacillus dendritiformis) involved as secondary invaders following the initial infection. More than a century ago, A. eurydice was discovered to be associated with European

[Furuncular myiasis - 2 case reports].

Furuncular myiasis caused by the larvae of the human botfly, Dermatobia hominis, is a common disease in tropical areas of Latin America and may therefore occur in travelers returning from that region. Outside the endemic areas, the diagnosis is often delayed because the disease is mistaken for a bacterial skin infection. Reported are two cases of furuncular myiasis in patients returning from Central and South America.

[Studies on preadult and adult forms of Anopheles nuñeztovari (Díptera: Culicidae) Gabaldon 1940 in an originally malarial area in Mérida state, Venezuela].

Pre-adult and adult forms of Anopheles nuñeztovari were studied and some variables of larval breeding from females captured and fed on human bait were described. The production of adult anopheles was 46,5% together with sufficient number of larvae to carry out any bioassay for studies of antilarval methods. The entomological evaluation of adults revealed that Anohpheles nuñeztovari predominance was 65% over other anopheles existing in the area, with a blood-sucking activity covering the whole night while peaks are reached near midnight. Average bite habit was set at 22,7 mosquitoes per man-hou…

[Calcified aseptic abscess due to Dracunculus medinensis (author's transl)].

A sterile abcess of the forearm caused by Dracunculus medinensis is described. Histologically, lysed and partially calcified worms and larvae were found one month after the outset of the swelling, giving a mottled aspect radiologically.

Imaging Microtubule Dynamics In Vivo in Drosophila Sensory Dendrites.

Drosophila larval class IV sensory neurons are located just beneath the cuticle and are characterized by highly branched dendritic arbors that expand isotropically in two dimensions as the larvae develop. The growth of these arbors is driven by stochastic processes involving growth, shrinkage, and pausing of the dendritic terminal tips. To test the hypothesis that tip dynamics are driven by microtubule dynamics, protocols have been developed for imaging fluorescently labeled microtubules within dendrites. The method enables visualization of microtubule dynamics in fine terminal dendrites of cl…

Dispersal asymmetry and dispersal distance shape dynamics and extinction risk in predator-prey metacommunities.

Dispersal asymmetry is common in advective environments, such as winds dispersing seeds and ocean currents transporting larvae, yet their consequences for the dynamics of interacting species remain difficult to predict. In spatially structured predator-prey metacommunities, prey and predators may experience different degrees of directional transport and dispersal scale (e.g., larval duration), generating connectivity mismatches that alter trophic coupling. Here, we investigate how dispersal asymmetry, interspecific mismatches in dispersal, and dispersal distance shape spatial population struct…

Insecticide exposure alters feeding and impairs ovary development in a solitary bee.

Insecticide exposure is a growing concern due to its implication in population declines and disruption of key ecosystem services such as pol … lopment of the solitary bee, Osmia lignaria. Bees were exposed to the insecticide, imidacloprid, as larvae and/or as adults in a fully crossed design over two years. Insecticide exposure to bees as adults, but not as larvae, reduced pollen and nectar feeding and impaired ovary maturation. These findings reveal mechanisms underlying insecticide effects o …

Zebrafish as a model to assess the neurotoxic potential of propylene glycol ethers.

Propylene glycol ethers are increasingly used as organic solvents of choice in domestic products and industrial manufacturing. However, little is known about their potential neurotoxic effects. In the present study, we therefore evaluated the acute toxic and behavioral effects of propylene glycol ethers using zebrafish larvae as a vertebrate model. Studied endpoints included viability, motor behavior, larval photo and locomotor response, and blood-brain barrier permeability (BBB). We observed hyperactivity at lower concentrations and hypoactivity at higher concentrations. Impaired behavioral p…

Hemorrhagic gingival and tracheopulmonary myiasis: literature review and case report of Chrysomya megacephala in a patient with HIV/AIDS and likely histoplasmosis.

Myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by dipteran larvae, primarily from the Calliphoridae, Oestridae, and Sarcophagidae families. Though often benign, myiasis can lead to severe secondary infections. In this case report, we describe the first fatal case of gingival and tracheopulmonary myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in an HIV/AIDS patient with probable histoplasmosis. The patient, a 47-yr-old male from Manzanillo, Mexico, presented with systemic infection, pancytopenia, and multiple organ failure. Upon admission, oral larval infesta…

The Diverse and Intricate Interactions Between Flies and Amphibians: A Systematic Review of Their Host-Use Patterns and Strategies.

Species interactions are defined by the behavioral strategies deployed by the parties involved. However, a barrier to fully understanding th … multiple times within Diptera: (a) adult flies feeding on amphibian blood (micropredators), (b) fly larvae feeding on anuran eggs (egg predators), and (c) fly larvae acting as parasites or parasitoids of adult frogs (myiasis). We provide a synthesis of the distinct phylogenetic and biogeographical signatures of these strategies and identify current gaps …
