[A case of Ifosfamide-induced dysuria which could be avoided by changing the regimen of mesna].

A 39-year-old woman with advanced and recurrent cervical carcinoma received chemotherapy with IFM+CDDP(IFM 5, 000mg/m2 by intravenous infusion for 24 hours and CDDP 50 mg/m2 by intravenous infusion for one hour)in September of 2011. Mesna(3, 200mg/body)was administered intravenously for 30min three times a day to prevent IFM-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. She complained of residual urine from the evening of day 2 and felt pain during urination from day 3 (urinary tract pain: Grade 1 CTCAE v4.0 ). Both symptoms continued until day 6. When the infusion rate of mesna was changed to 24 hours of con

[Prognostic factors and prognostic groups for overall survival of cervical cancer patients FIGO stage IB1].

A petro-prospective study on 132 women with early invasive cervical cancer was performed. According to Log-Rank test, Breslow and Tarone-Ware tests we analyzed the following factors: age, type of histology, tumor grading, tumor localization (exo-, endocervix), lymph node metastases, postoperative histologic findings, blood transfusion and Hb on the day of discharge. We found as an independent prognostic factors for overall survival: tumor localization, postoperative histologic findings and blood transfusion. Based on these factors two profnostic groups were created with favorable and unfavorab

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: management of the parotid and neck.

Although the metastatic rate of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is low, detailed examination for the presence of micro- and macrometastasis of lymph nodes is crucial in avoiding the devastating outcomes and in planning appropriate treatment. Cutaneous SCC of the head and neck can spread to parotid lymph nodes, cervical lymph nodes, or both, depending on the location of the primary tumor. Therefore, clinical and radiologic evaluation of the parotid and neck should be performed in patients with cutaneous SCC. Optimal treatment of metastatic cutaneous SCC of the head and neck should consi

Neuroendocrine tumors of the submandibular gland: literature review and report of a case.

Primary salivary neuroendocrine neoplasms are extremely rare, with only 1 case of carcinoid tumor and 7 cases of primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas having been reported. Salivary small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas are more frequent, accounting for less than 2% of all salivary malignancies. In addition to a literature review on the subject, the authors describe a rare case of malignant intermediate-grade neuroendocrine tumor of the submandibular gland.

A case of isolated paraaortic lymph node recurrence from colon cancer successfully treated with chemoradiotherapy.

Isolated paraaortic lymph node (PALN) recurrence from colorectal cancer is rare and has no established treatment. A 56-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for the treatment of PALN recurrence in June 2005. She had undergone right hemicolectomy for ascending colon cancer two years earlier. The pathological diagnosis in 2003 was a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma with positive PALN metastasis in 3 of 4 dissected nodes (T3, N1b, M1a, stage IVa). At our hospital, chemoradiotherapy was started, with the radiation field determined from positron emission tomography (PET) images. Oral tegafu

Preoperative radiotherapy decreases lymph node yield of neck dissections for head and neck cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if preoperative radiation therapy (RT) decreases the lymph node (LN) yield found at the time of neck dissection. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: The SEER database was queried for patients presenting between 1998 and 2002 with tonsil, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and laryngeal primary lesions. Tabulation was made by LNs examined, type of neck dissection performed, and timing of RT. Data from 2441 patients were retrieved. Descriptive statistics were used. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-one patients wi

Stratification systems as prognostic tools for defining risk of lymph node metastasis in penile squamous cell carcinomas.

Inguinal lymph node metastasis is the single most important factor for predicting survival in patients with penile squamous cell carcinomas. To estimate the likelihood of this event, investigators have combined pathologic features of the primary tumor in the form of stratification systems. In this article we review 3 such systems (Solsona et al, J Urol 2001;165:1506; Hungerhuber et al, Urology 68:621, 2006; and Chaux et al, Am J Surg Pathol 2009;33:1049) built upon histologic grade, extent and depth of tumor invasion, and perineural invasion. We evaluate their usefulness, limitations, and poss

Dynamic sentinel lymph node biopsy as the new paradigm for the management of penile cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The management of patients with penile cancer who have high-risk features for micrometastasis with clinically negative inguinal lymph nodes is controversial. We describe the history of the sentinel lymph node biopsy and how it has evolved to become a useful adjunct in the management of penile cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a PubMed search, we identified the evidence relating to the management of the inguinal lymph nodes in penile cancer between 1977 and 2010. RESULTS: The concept of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) was first described in 1977 for penile carcinoma where lymphan

Robot-assisted Sistrunk's operation, total thyroidectomy, and neck dissection via a transaxillary and retroauricular (TARA) approach in papillary carcinoma arising in thyroglossal duct cyst and thyroid gland.

BACKGROUND: Carcinomas arising in the thyroglossal duct cysts are rare, accounting only for about 0.7-1.5 % of all thyroglossal duct cysts. Synchronous occurrence of thyroglossal duct carcinoma and thyroid carcinoma is reported to be even rarer. Traditionally, surgical treatments of such coexisting thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma (TGDCa) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) were typically performed through a single transverse or double incisions on the overlying skin. A longer, extended cervical incision might be required if neck dissection is necessary. Though this method provides the opera

Incidence of metastasis in circumflex iliac nodes distal to the external iliac nodes in intermediate- and high-risk endometrial cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to elucidate the incidence of metastasis in circumflex iliac nodes distal to the external iliac nodes (CINDEIN), which are also called suprainguinal nodes, in intermediate- and high-risk endometrial cancer. Removal of these nodes needs to be discussed from the viewpoint of patient's quality of life because removal of CINDEIN is strongly related to lower extremity lymphedema. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out for 508 patients with intermediate- and high-risk endometrial cancer who were included in this study. We identified patients with

The analysis of receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells (RCAS1) immunoreactivity within the microenvironment of the ovarian cancer lesion relative to the applied therapeutic strategy.

RCAS1 is involved in generating the suppressive profile of the tumor microenvironment that helps cancer cells evade immune surveillance. The status of the cells surrounding the cancer nest may affect both the progression of the cancer and the development of metastases. In cases of ovarian cancer, a large number of patients do not respond to the applied therapy. The patient's response to the applied therapy is directly linked to the status of the tumor microenvironment and the intensity of its suppressive profile. We analyzed the immunoreactivity of RCAS1 on the cells present in the ovarian can

Staging primary breast cancer. Are there tumour pathological features that correlate with a false-negative axillary ultrasound?

AIM: To investigate whether the histopathological characteristics of primary breast cancer tumours could predict the likelihood of false-negative axillary ultrasound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Screening and symptomatic patients were identified from pathology records and imaging and pathology records reviewed. True and false-negative axillary staging ultrasound groups were compared statistically in terms of tumour size, pathological type and grade, lymphovascular invasion, and oestrogen receptor (ER) status. RESULTS: Of 155 women with normal ultrasounds, 45 (29%) were node positive at axillary s

Rosai-Dorfman disease presenting as a breast mass and enlarged axillary lymph node mimicking malignancy: a case report and review of the literature.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (also called sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy) involves lymph nodes or lymph nodes with extranodal sites. We present a unique case of a patient presenting with a breast mass and axillary lymphadenopathy, mimicking malignancy clinically and radiographically. Core needle biopsies of the breast and axillary lymph node showed histologic features concerning the lymphoma. However, excisional biopsy specimen demonstrated characteristic features of Rosai-Dorfman disease. The disease recurred locally 6 months later in the same breast, 1 month later in the contralat

[Postoperative axillary-lymph-node recurrence in breast cancer patients].

We investigated 13 cases of axillary-lymph-node recurrence, who received an operation for an early stage breast cancer. They are the first recurrence of only regional without metastatic disease; the 4 patients, who had sentinel-lymph-node by biopsy at first operation, received an axillary lymph adenectomy, and 5 patients received re-lymph-adectomy after axillary lymph node dissection. The other 4 patients received only systemic therapy. Receptor conversion between primary and lymph-node recurrent site was identified for ER in 2 patients; one showed a lower expression of ER and the other showed

Prognostic significance of radiologically determined neck node volume in head and neck cancer: a systematic review.

This systematic review addresses the prognostic significance of neck node volume in head and neck cancer. Primary tumor volume evolved as an independent significant factor for survival in head and neck cancer patients. Besides primary tumor volume, multiple prognostic features related to the regional lymph nodes were studied in literature. In literature, some authors showed the significance of total tumor volume/nodal volume for survival and loco-regional control. Articles reporting prognosis and survival in nodal tumor volumes were collected by systematically reviewing publications listed in
