Health Maintenance in Postmenopausal Women.

There are unique considerations for preventive care in postmenopausal women. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, and postmenopausal women should be routinely screened for risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease 10-year risk scores should be calculated to guide management of risk factors, including lifestyle changes and medications, particularly statins. Average-risk women should be screened for breast cancer with mammography every 1 to 2 years starting at age 40 years. Lung cancer scr

Nomogram to screen older adult patients attending the radiology department for sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an age-related syndrome that can impact the physical and mental health of older adults. However, it is often overlooked in clinical practice. Therefore, we aim to construct a nomogram based on simplified discriminant parameters for screening older adult patients for sarcopenia risk. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 654 patients aged ≥ 60 years who underwent an examination in the radiology department between October 2023 and June 2024. Patients were diagnosed with sarcopenia according to the method and cutoff value criteria proposed the Asian Working Group

The Utility of a Smartphone-Based Retinal Imaging Device as a Screening Tool in an Outpatient Clinic Setting: Protocol for an Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma, a disease leading to the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, results in changes to the optic nerve head that are often diagnosed late when visual problems arise. With the prevalence of glaucoma surpassing 76 million adults worldwide and with glaucoma being the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world, the early detection and management of glaucoma is imperative. Digital ophthalmoscopes, such as the D-EYE (D-EYE, Srl), have emerged as a technology that uses smartphone cameras with an attachment on the lens to visualize the retina and optic nerve head withou

How can we improve migrant health checks in UK primary care: 'Health Catch-UP!' a protocol for a participatory intervention development study.

INTRODUCTION: Global migration has steadily risen, with 16% of the UK population born abroad. Migrants (defined here as foreign-born individuals) face unique health risks, including potential higher rates and delays in diagnosis of infectious and non-communicable diseases, compounded by significant barriers to healthcare. UK Public Health guidelines recommend screening at-risk migrants, but primary care often faces significant challenges in achieving this, exacerbating health disparities. The Health Catch-UP! tool was developed as a novel digital, multidisease screening and catch-up vaccinatio

Little ears - Aboriginal programmes for hearing and EAR screening (LEAP - HEAR): a research protocol for co-design workshops to strengthen programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple well-considered but siloed initiatives and programmes exist in Australia to support ear and hearing screening and assessment for Indigenous children. However, the lack of coordination of these programmes leads to inefficiencies in resource allocation and disrupts opportunities to implement a cost-effective, efficient, and easily navigable system of care. Indigenous children experience high prevalence rates of middle ear disease, as well as earlier onset, increased severity and longer infections compared with non-Indigenous children. The aims of this study are to: (1) Und

Paediatric screening in Italy as a gateway to secondary prevention in type 1 diabetes.

This article explores Italy's pioneering national paediatric screening initiative for type 1 diabetes (T1D), the first of its kind to be mandated by the Italian law for the general population aged 1-17 years. This initiative is designed to facilitate early detection and secondary prevention of T1D and coeliac disease (CD), aiming to identify children in presymptomatic stages of T1D, regardless of family history. Emphasis is placed on autoantibody screening for T1D and CD to refine risk prediction and enhance secondary prevention efforts. Furthermore, the anti-CD3 + T cell monoclonal antibody t

Implementation of a novel framework for hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment in an academic health system.

PURPOSE: Hepatitis C viral infection is a major public health concern and leading cause of chronic liver disease in the United States. Hepatitis C is primarily transmitted through blood exchange and is highly prevalent among people who inject drugs. Despite the availability of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment, cost and barriers to access remain prohibitive for many patients. SUMMARY: In 2018, University of Kentucky HealthCare (UKHC) began a screening program for patients admitted to its emergency department (ED). Despite identifying hepatitis C RNA-positive patients, connection to care

Prospective evaluation of the impact of repeated whole prison testing for hepatitis C.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is prevalent in prisons. Universal reception HCV testing is recommended, but acceptance can be suboptimal. To detect and treat missed HCV infections, a high-intensity test and treat (HITT) programme was introduced to rapidly test entire prisons. It remains unknown whether regular HITTs will be required to maintain prison microelimination. We aimed to assess the outcomes of HITTs conducted in a prison 4 years apart with ongoing reception testing. METHODS: A prospective observational evaluation of the impact of HITTs was conducted in Janua

Italian screening protocol and genotypes characterization for HCV elimination (2022-2023) in Ferrara's province: a real-world study.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a worldwide health hazard, and in chronic form (nowadays affecting 50 million people - World Health Organization data) can be lethal. To forestall it, preventive screening is a mandatory approach. Since 2021, Italy conducts a national-wide screening program to eliminate the virus from its population. The team perfected an innovative method throughout the period between 2022 and 2023, to answer that medical necessity and map HCV genotypes. The medical protocol has introduced a dedicated double invitation model for the adherents, with consequential pre-prepared medical

Tuberculosis in adult migrants in Europe: a TBnet consensus statement.

INTRODUCTION: Global migration has increased in recent decades owing to war, conflict, persecution and natural disasters, but also secondary to increased opportunities related to work or study. Migrants' risk of tuberculosis (TB) differs depending on migration, socioeconomic status, mode of travel and TB risk in transit, TB incidence and healthcare provision in country of origin. Despite advances in TB care for migrants and new treatment strategies, decisions for managing migrants at risk of TB often rely on expert opinions, rather than clinical evidence. METHODS: A systematic literature sear
