Linkages between maternal experience of intimate partner violence and child nutrition outcomes: A rapid evidence assessment.

BACKGROUND: A strong evidence base indicates that maternal caregivers' experience of intimate partner violence [IPV] impacts children's health, cognitive development, and risk-taking behaviors. Our objective was to review peer-reviewed literature describing the associations between a child's indirect exposure to IPV and corresponding nutrition outcomes, with a particular focus on fragile settings in low and middle-income countries [LMICs]. METHODS: We conducted a rapid evidence assessment to synthesize quantitative associations between maternal caregivers' IPV experience and children's nutrit

Associations between maternal and offspring glucose metabolism: a 9-year follow-up of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: There is increasing evidence that the in utero environment affects the health and disease risk of offspring throughout their lives. The long-term effect of maternal hyperglycaemia on offspring glucose metabolism is of interest in a public health perspective. The aim of this study was to examine the association between in utero exposure to maternal glycaemia and offspring glucose metabolism. METHODS: Mother-child pairs were recruited from an RCT to prevent gestational diabetes mellitus where 855 healthy pregnant women were randomised to exercise or standard antenatal care. The or

Association of Prenatal Maternal Depression and Anxiety Symptoms With Infant White Matter Microstructure.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal depression and anxiety can have deleterious and lifelong consequences on child development. However, many aspects of the association of early brain development with maternal symptoms remain unclear. Understanding the timing of potential neurobiological alterations holds inherent value for the development and evaluation of future therapies and interventions. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between exposure to prenatal maternal depression and anxiety symptoms and offspring white matter microstructure at 1 month of age. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort s

Maternal urinary phthalate metabolites during pregnancy and thyroid hormone concentrations in maternal and cord sera: The HOME Study.

BACKGROUND: Phthalates, endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are commonly found in consumer products, may adversely affect thyroid hormones, but findings from prior epidemiologic studies are inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: In a prospective cohort study, we investigated whether maternal urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations and phthalate mixtures measured during pregnancy were associated with thyroid hormones among pregnant women and newborns. METHODS: We measured nine phthalate metabolites [monoethyl phthalate (MEP), mono-n-butyl phthalate, mono-isobutyl phthalate, monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP)

Maternal Stress During Pregnancy and Allergic Diseases in Children During the First Year of Life.

BACKGROUND: Many recent studies indicate that prenatal maternal distress increases the risk of allergic diseases in children. The mechanisms that favor it are still unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the association between exposure to different kinds of prenatal stress and the occurrence of atopic dermatitis, food allergy, wheezing, and recurrent respiratory tract infections in children. METHODS: The study population consisted of 370 mother-child pairs from a Polish Mother and Child Cohort (REPRO_PL). The analysis was restricted to the women who worked at least one month during the pre

Placental cellular composition and umbilical cord tissue metal(loid) concentrations: A descriptive molecular epidemiology study leveraging DNA methylation.

The placenta is a mixture of cell types, which may regulate maternal-fetal transfer of exogenous chemicals or become altered in response to exposures. We leveraged placental DNA methylation to characterize major constituent cell types and applied compositional data analysis to test associations with non-essential metal(loid)s measured in paired umbilical cord tissue (N = 158). Higher proportions of syncytiotrophoblasts were associated with lower arsenic, whereas higher proportions of Hofbauer cells were associated with higher cadmium concentrations in umbilical cords. These findings suggest th

Immunological factors influencing HIV acquisition in infants: A narrative review.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition in infants is a critical public health concern, particularly in regions with high maternal HIV prevalence. The susceptibility of infants to HIV is influenced by a complex interplay of immunological factors, including maternal antibodies, innate immune responses, and the development of adaptive immunity. This review aims to elucidate the various immunological components that contribute to the risk of HIV transmission in infants and highlights the importance of understanding these factors for developing effective prevention strategies. Maternal anti

Developmental Programming of Body Composition: Update on Evidence and Mechanisms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A growing body of epidemiological and experimental data indicate that nutritional or environmental stressors during early development can induce long-term adaptations that increase risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions-a phenomenon termed "developmental programming." A common phenotype in humans and animal models is altered body composition, with reduced muscle and bone mass, and increased fat mass. In this review, we summarize the recent literature linking prenatal factors to future body composition and explore contributing mechanis

Educational preparation for maternal, child and family health nurses in Australia.

AIM: The study aims to map and critique the current postgraduate educational nursing programmes offered to nurses and midwives in maternal, child and family health in Australia. BACKGROUND: Nursing specialties that focus on the early years of child health and development are based on international recognition of the developmental needs of the growing infant and of the social, health and economic consequences of failing to support families to raise their children in optimal environments. Little is known whether the educational programmes that prepare maternal, child and family health nurses (M

Clinical and laboratory study of children exposed in utero to maternal rubella.

Clinical and serological findings are described in 218 children aged 1 to 4 years who were exposed in utero to maternal rubella infection, and who were apparently normal at birth. 84 children were reassessed at 6 to 8 years of age. At the first examination, 23% of children had rubella-like defects, the most common of which was deafness associated in some cases with retinopathy. There was a close correlation between the incidence of rubella defects and both the time of exposure to maternal rubella and the presence or absence of rubella antibodies in the blood at the first examination (1 to 4 ye

Influence of Low-Level Prenatal Exposure to PCDD/Fs and PCBs on Empathizing, Systemizing and Autistic Traits: Results from the Duisburg Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are assumed to act as endocrine disruptor chemicals. Prenatal exposure to these pollutants might influence fetal steroid hormone levels, which are thought to be related to sex-typical development and autistic traits. OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of prenatal levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs with autism traits and sex-typical behaviour in childhood. METHODS: We measured levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in maternal blood samples during pregnancy using gas chromatography/high-resolution mas

Restoration of Gut Microbiota Vertical Transmission by Bifidobacterium Mitigates Pollutant-Induced Intergenerational Obesity.

Mass production and widespread distribution of environmental pollutants enhance human susceptibility to disease, which may be related to gut microbial communities. However, the link between the transgenerational toxic effects of environmental pollutants and animal gut microbial communities remains obscure. Here, we show that environmental dose p,p'-DDE (a typical environmental pollutant) exposure prepregnancy reshapes offspring metabolic homeostasis through vertical transmission of the maternal gut microbiota, inducing the development of obesity. In addition, by taking cross-sectional temporal

Mechanical Thrombectomy for High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism in Pregnancy: A Case Report and a Systematic Review of the Literature.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) in pregnancy is a major clinical challenge with potentially fatal maternal and fetal outcomes. Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) offers a promising alternative when thrombolysis is contraindicated, although evidence in pregnancy is limited. We describe a 26-year-old at 29 + 5 weeks' gestation with high-risk PE causing acute right heart failure, successfully treated, achieving rapid hemodynamic recovery, and minimal fetal radiation exposure. A systematic review identified 15 MT cases in pregnancy or peripartum (11 antepartum, 4 postpartum), reporting 100% maternal survival an

Prenatal origins of neurodegeneration: The role of maternal immune activation in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's pathobiology.

Recent evidence suggests that prenatal environmental factors, particularly maternal infection or maternal immune activation (MIA), may influence the progression of brain aging and lifetime risk for neurodegenerative disorders. The hypothesis is that even a short-lived inflammatory event during pregnancy may leave a lasting imprint on the developing brain and immune system of the fetus, such that aging or subsequent insults may later unmask neurodegenerative disorders. Support for this hypothesis comes largely from animal studies, where gestational inflammation has been shown to potentiate the

Full-term pregnancy after severe gestational psittacosis: a case report and literature review.

Gestational psittacosis is a rare but high-risk infection caused by Chlamydia psittaci, often leading to severe maternal complications and adverse fetal outcomes. We report a unique case of a 30-year-old woman at 22 + 5 weeks of gestation who presented with acute high fever and respiratory failure following bird exposure. The diagnosis of C. psittaci infection was rapidly confirmed via blood metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). Following multidisciplinary consultation involving obstetricians, infectious disease specialists, intensivists, respiratory physicians, clinical pharmacists,
