Health professionals not specialized in genetics are expected to take an increasing role in genetic services delivery. This article aims to identify legal and ethical challenges related to a collaborative oncogenetics service model, where non-genetic health professionals provide genetic services to patients. Through a scoping literature review, we identified issues to the provision of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, or other hereditary adult cancers, genetic testing under this model. Concerns that arose in the literature were informed consent, lack of adherence to best practice guideline

The catastrophic misinterpretation (CM) model of panic disorder proposes that spontaneous panic attacks are the result of interpretation of harmless autonomic arousal as precursors to physical (e.g., heart attack) or psychological (e.g., insanity) emergency. Mixed research findings to date have provided equivocal support. The body sensations interpretation questionnaire-modified was administered via Internet to investigate core assumptions of the model among 30 people with panic disorder (PD), 28 with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and 30 non-anxious controls. The PD group gave more harm-relat

Depressive personality disorder (DPD) is being considered for inclusion in future editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). However, there is substantial conceptual and empirical overlap between DPD and dysthymic disorder (Dysthymia) criteria, suggesting that these two constructs may not be distinct. Confirmatory factor analysis of the DPD traits and dysthymia symptoms in a large, nonclinical sample (N = 368) indicated that a two-factor model was a better fit than a one-factor model. However, binary diagnostic analysis revealed that over half of the individua

OBJECTIVE: The authors present a model of the developmental psychopathology and neurobiology of Tourette's syndrome that provides a framework for ongoing research and treatment.
METHOD: The model is based on clinical experience and a selective review of relevant scientific literature.
RESULTS: During the past decade, Tourette's syndrome and related conditions have emerged as model disorders to study the interplay of genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and environmental factors during development. Although prevention and treatment are paramount, the effectiveness of these interventions d

Depression is one of the most common health concerns all around the globe. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant agent, with neuroprotective, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant effects in animal models. We carried out a systematic review of articles that reported the effect of VPA on stress-related depression in animal models. A search of databases was conducted with keywords related to valproic acid (VPA) and stress-induced depression. Data from the Forced Swimming Test (FST), Open Field Test (OFT), Novel Object Recognition (NOR), and Sucrose Preference Test (SPT) were e

The evidence for the structure of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model relies heavily on analyses of correlations among Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders diagnoses, which entrenches some of their limitations. In this study, we deconstructed the mental disorders covered in HiTOP into individual symptoms-with personality disorders represented via item-level assessment of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders facets-and rebuilt the HiTOP model from the ground up. Participants self-selected into an online mental health study and were randomly spl

In a recent review and meta-analysis, Goudarzi et al. (Stress, 2026 Dec 31; 29(1):2641561) show that valproic acid (VPA) exhibits antidepressant (AD)-like effects in several procedures involving the induction of depression-like symptoms by prior sub-chronic or chronic stress in laboratory rats or mice. In their review, the authors included reports of experimental studies (covering only from 2007 to 2024), using several validated depression-like behaviors, such as decreased sucrose preference, increased immobility in the forced swim test (FST), decreased activity in the open field test, and/or

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease in which phenotypic variability is still poorly understood. Our hypothesis is that the exposome, and more specifically exposure to air pollution and/or anxiety, could play a role in this phenomenon. In this context, we have developed an experimental study in which cystic fibrosis mice were exposed to stress (anxiety) and then to complex realistic atmospheres. Our results should provide mechanistic elements for a better understanding of the phenotypic variability observed in cystic fibrosis patients and thus be able to propose new avenues for better manageme

Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate social norms or rules are violated. This article presents information on CD with an emphasis on a new multispecifier personality model that could offer a valuable new perspective on CD by refining the way we specify CD. The multispecifier model may have the potential to clarify the considerable confusion that has occurred over past decades and improve our understanding of prevalence, etiology, course, and treatment of you

Currently, Drosophila is widely used to study brain diseases. Unfortunately, Drosophila still lacks a mature and stable model for research on depression. This study addressed this issue by systematically exploring external stress and intrinsic susceptibility factors (Drosophila strains, adult/larval forms) that may influence the establishment and reproducibility of the stress-induced model. On this basis, the parameters are optimized. The results indicate Drosophila strains and forms are critical factors influencing model establishment, while external stress is the primary cause affecting the

Reporting a close-other to authorities can save lives from extreme deviant behaviors but it also poses a dilemma as gatekeepers struggle between their relationship and societal obligations. We propose and test a multi-goal, multi-action, cognitive-affective model to elucidate this decision-making process. Across various contexts (hate crimes, problem gambling, and violent extremism), gatekeepers' motivational strength to report and not report their close-other and their anticipated regret toward both actions simultaneously contributed to the variance of reporting intentions (30-70%). Notably,

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) and dysregulation (ED) have significant impacts on the mental health and quality of life of autistic individuals and their families, yet little is known about ER development in early childhood autism. This paper proposes a developmental model of disruptions to early ER development, emphasizing parent-child co-regulation, to guide future research and clinical care.
METHOD: Empirical research on ER, ED, and parent-child co-regulation in young autistic children (mean age <6 years) was summarized. Insights from theoretical and empirical work on typical ER develo

Currently, substance use and mental health problems are on the rise. Gender-integrated treatments for dual pathology exist, although no specific therapies have been found for major depressive disorder co-occurring with alcoholism in women. Women initiate alcohol consumption later than men but experience a faster escalation of addiction, although they seek help earlier. Among women, depressive disorder, somatomorphic disorder, bipolar disorder, dysthymia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cluster C personality disorders are more prevalent. Alcohol is the primary substance consumed by women. A

Psychological well-being influences all the facets of adolescent success. This study examined the psychometric properties of PERMA, a subjective well-being measure consisting of five domains: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. The sample size consisted of 502 high school students from public schools in Qatar. Contrary to expectations, the five-factor structure for PERMA did not fit our data well; however, after refining the model by the errors of the covariances between items, the one-factor model was found to be applicable. Multivariate analysis reveale

Social media use (SMU) is a significant part of many people's everyday life. Research around the globe describes an increase of addictive SMU tendencies since the COVID-19 outbreak. The present work combines available findings in the "Vicious Circle of addictive Social Media Use and Mental Health" model to explain how social media (SM) activity can contribute to the development of addictive tendencies, which consequences they have for mental health, and how to prevent them. Following the model, the interplay between the risk factors negative experiences caused by daily hassles and by unexpecte

OBJECTIVES: The psychology of moral decision-making classically contrasts utilitarianism (based on consequences) and deontology (based on moral norms). Previous studies capitalizing on this dichotomy have suggested the presence of a utilitarian bias among patients with severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD). We aimed to further disentangle the processes involved in such bias through a more validated approach, the CNI model of moral decision-making. This model allows to go further than the classical approach by distinguishing sensitivity to consequences (C), to moral norms (N), and general preferen

BACKGROUND: Previously, a chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model has been widely-adopted for assessing depressive-like behaviors in animals. However, there is still room for improvement in the CSDS model to safeguard study accuracy and the welfare of lab rodents. Our study team developed a novel, standardized apparatus to induce CSDS in rodents and assessed the model's practical adaptability.
METHODS: An innovative CSDS cage apparatus and water bottle was designed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the newly developed tools, a variety of animal models, including the tail suspension test (TS

The basolateral amygdala (BLA) appears to serve an important function in the pathophysiology of depression. Depressive symptoms, such as anhedonia are largely caused by dysfunction in the brain's reward system, in which the ventral pallidum (VP) participates in by controlling dopamine release. However, the role of the BLA-VP pathway in the development of depression remains poorly understood. To investigate this pathway, we employed the Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS) mouse model, in which we injected retroAAV expressing GFP-Cre into the VP and AAV expressing hM4Di-mCherry into the BLA

Accumulating evidence has suggested that the gut microbiome plays an important role in depression. Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK), a next-generation probiotic, shows a beneficial effect on immune and metabolic homeostasis. The relative abundance of AKK was found negatively correlated with depressive symptoms in both clinical and pre-clinical studies. To evaluate the potential antidepressant effect of AKK and explore the possible mechanism, we used chronic alcohol exposure and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) to induce depressive-like behaviors in mice. We found that oral AKK administrat

Childhood cancer survivors have a high risk for premature cardiovascular diseases, mainly due to cardiotoxic cancer treatments such as doxorubicin (DOX). Psychosocial stress is a significant cardiovascular risk factor and an enormous burden in childhood cancer survivors. Although observational studies suggest that psychosocial stress is associated with cardiovascular complications in cancer survivors, there is no translationally relevant animal model to study this interaction. We established a "two-hit" model in which juvenile mice were administered DOX (4 mg/kg/week for 3 weeks), paired to a
