Syndecan-1 expression during postnatal tooth and oral mucosa development in rats aged from two days to six weeks.

Syndecans are a family of heparan sulphate proteoglycans that regulate cell-matrix interactions that influence cell growth, proliferation and morphology. The aim of this study was to observe changes in the expression of Syndecan-1 in the developing epithelium of the rat oral mucosa and in the epithelial cell rests of Malassez in the developing periodontium of normal rat molars, from late crown development through to early eruption. Immuno-histochemistry (Syndecan-1 N-18) and histochemistry (Alcec Bluel were used to observe changes in the expression of Syndecon-1 in rats aged two to 42 days. Re…

Relationship between facial types and tooth and bone characteristics of the mandible obtained by CT scanning.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate relationships between morphological characteristics of vertical sections of the mandibular body and facial type. Of the correlation coefficients between tooth and bone inclination and facial type parameters, facial height index (FHI) was negatively associated with second premolar (P2), first molar (M1), and second molar (M2) inclinations. The angle represented by Frankfort horizontal plane to mandibular plane (FMA) was negatively associated with bone inclination of the M2 section. The buccal cortical bone was thicker in short-faced individuals than in …

A remarkable cranium of Plesiopithecus teras (Primates, Prosimii) from the Eocene of Egypt.

Between 1991 and 1993 specimens of a highly distinctive primate, named Plesiopithecus teras [Simons, E.L. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 10743-10747], were found at site L-41 in late Eocene deposits of the Fayum Depression, Egypt. The most important of these specimens consists of a nearly complete skull, which facilitates the evaluation of affinities of this primate. Characteristics of the known material now demonstrate that Plesiopithecus is a prosimian, although mandibular molar morphology, in particular, bears similarity to that in molars of archaic members of Anthropoidea. Plesiopit…

Responses of tooth eruption and alveolar bone subject to somatic growth retardation in the rat.

The morphogenesis and regression of the osteodental fissure formed by alveolar bone in the maxillary and mandibular regions has been investigated in relation to eruption of the dentition during and following a period of somatic retardation stemming from nutritional suppression. Fissural formation occurred above the first and second molars of the maxilla and mandible, morphologically within normal limits but retarded by two days. During eruption a sequence of cuspal perforations of the alveolar bone took place behind the edge of the alveolar crest which later disintegrated as the bulk of the cr…

Quantifying Bite Forces for Solid Foods: Implications for Patients Postmandibular Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Bite forces required to masticate different food consistencies remain unknown, complicating dietary guidelines following mandibular reconstruction. This study quantifies the forces required for solid foods and estimates safe bite limits postreconstruction. METHODS: Twenty food items were prepared according to IDDSI Levels 5 through 7b. Incisor and molar bite forces were measured using a custom-built force meter. Finite element (FE) analysis simulated safe force thresholds for single-, double-, and triple-segment mandibular reconstructions. RESULTS: Bite force increased with food …

Evaluation of a Burkholderia ambifaria strain from plants as a novel promising probiotic in dental caries management.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics serve as a novel preventive or therapeutic approach for dental caries owing to their ability to reverse dysbiosis and … srupted biofilm structures. B. ambifaria effectively reduced the severity of carious lesions in rat molars, regardless of the inoculation sequence. Molars pretreated or treated with B. ambifaria demonstrated notably higher enamel volumes. Additionally, colonization of rat molars by B. ambifaria persisted for 6 weeks. CONCLUSION: The B. ambifaria strain …

Evaluation and Management of Impacted Teeth in the Adolescent Patient.

The most common oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure in adolescents is excision of impacted third molars. Adolescent patients should be evaluated for third molars starting around age 16 years unless symptomatic at an earlier age. The dental examination should include panorex imaging to assess development, pathologic condition, and possibility of eruption versus impaction. Various classification systems are available to identify the position and difficulty of the proposed surgical procedure. Retained impacted teeth increase the patient's risk of various morbidities including recurrent infe…

Large pediatric maxillary dentigerous cysts presenting with sinonasal and orbital symptoms: A case series.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of unerupted, embedded, or impacted teeth. Most of them are associated with mandibular third molars, followed by maxillary third molars and canines. They are usually asymptomatic, and rarely do they grow extensively and compress the adjacent anatomic structures. We report 5 cases of extensive maxillary dentigerous cysts presenting with sinonasal and orbital symptoms. A literature review for similar presentations of dentigerous cysts has demonstrated 21 cases. Recognition of the extensive growth potential of the dentigero…

Coronectomy: Partial Odontectomy or Intentional Root Retention.

Coronectomy is considered in patients older than 25, where there is an intimate relationship between the roots of a retained lower third molar (occasionally second or first molars) and the inferior alveolar nerve, in noncontraindicated circumstances. It may be used on younger patients with a medium to high risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage. The decision to use this technique is made with the aid of cone-beam computed tomography scans. Short- to medium-term success rate is excellent, but long-term studies are not yet available. The technique is gaining wider acceptance, although there are …
