Optimizing Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Burn Patients Using Enoxaparin Through PBPK Modeling.

Burn injuries cause physiological changes that alter enoxaparin pharmacokinetics, often leading to inadequate exposure and suboptimal venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis. Current weight-based dosing and anti-Xa monitoring provide limited guidance for dose optimization across burn severities. This study develops a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of enoxaparin across burn phases to evaluate target attainment under standard dosing while accounting for burn severity, augmented renal clearance (ARC), and body weight, and to propose individualized dosing strategies to improve

Pulmonary function estimation and reliability assessment using hybrid-optimized ensemble learning.

Objective.Pulmonary function tests are central to assessing ventilatory impairment but are often limited by accessibility, repeatability, and patient compliance, particularly in community and longitudinal monitoring settings. This study investigates whether acoustic features of voluntary coughs can serve as low burden surrogate signals reflecting trends in spirometry related indices of ventilatory impairment.Approach.We propose a dual output ensemble learning framework that integrates deterministic regression and probabilistic interval estimation to jointly model spirometry related parameters

Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil components promote anaesthesia in Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) through behavioural and cardiorespiratory modulation.

Anaesthetic management plays a crucial role in maintaining the welfare and physiological stability of fish during routine aquaculture and research procedures. The essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis (ROEO) has emerged as a promising natural anaesthetic; however, its cardiophysiological effects in Amazonian species remain underexplored. This study assessed the behavioural, electrocardiographic and respiratory responses of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) exposed to ROEO, aiming to define safe and effective concentrations as a natural anaesthetic agent in a Neotropical teleost species. The Interaction Between the Central Nervous System and Dental Tissues: Hypothetical Dental Interoception Inferred From Skeletal Interoception.

BACKGROUND: The circuit of interoception, through which the nervous system monitors internal physiological states and maintains tissue homeostasis, has been well characterized in bone. However, whether a comparable interoceptive mechanism exists in the other mineralized tissue-teeth-remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: This review uses skeletal interoception as a comparative framework to examine whether analogous sensory-regulatory mechanisms may operate in dental tissues. We summarize the neuroanatomical basis of dental innervation, the peripheral cellular mechanisms by which the pulp-dentine comple

Cardiorespiratory interactions during the transitional period in extremely preterm infants: a narrative review.

We aimed to review the physiology and evidence behind cardiorespiratory interactions during the transitional circulation of extremely preterm infants with fragile physiology and to propose a framework for future research. Cord clamping strategies have a great impact on initial haemodynamic changes, and appropriate transition can be facilitated by establishing spontaneous ventilation before cord clamping. Mechanical ventilation modifies preterm transitional haemodynamics, with positive pressure ventilation affecting the right and left heart loading conditions. Pulmonary vascular resistances can

Evaluation of fish pituitary spheroids to study annual endocrine reproductive control.

The pituitary gland is a small endocrine gland located below the hypothalamus. This gland releases several important hormones and controls the function of many other endocrine system glands to release hormones. Fish pituitary hormonal cells are controlled by neuroendocrine and sex steroid feedback. To study the complex pituitary function in vivo, we established an in vitro pituitary spheroid assay and evaluated its suitability for monitoring the annual reproductive physiological conditions in Takifugu rubripes, also known as torafugu, is one of the most economically important species distribut

Confusion in the monitoring of coagulation function in pregnant and neonate patients with severe disease: A case reports and brief literature review.

RATIONALE: Different populations have their own unique physiological and pathological characteristics. However, in specialized maternal and child hospitals, there is currently a lack of standardized methods for assessing coagulation dysfunction, both domestically and internationally. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 19-day-old neonate was transferred to neonatal intensive care unit with cyanosis, nasal bleeding for 6 hours, and a consciousness disorder for 5 hours. A 33-year-old woman presented with hydramnios and a 39 + 3week intrauterine pregnancy. All indicators before delivery were normal, but postpar

An in vitro Assessment of the Haemodynamic Features Occurring Within the True and False Lumens Separated by a Dissection Flap for a Patient-Specific Type B Aortic Dissection.

One of the highest mortality rates of cardiovascular diseases is aortic dissections with challenging treatment options. Currently, less study has been conducted in developing in vitro patient-specific Type B aortic dissection models, which mimic physiological flow conditions along the true and false lumens separated by a dissection flap with multiple entry and exit tears. A patient-specific Stanford Type B aortic dissection scan was replicated by an in-house manufactured automatic injection moulding system and a novel modelling technique for creating the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and desce

Arrhythmia and Sudden Death in Hemodialysis Patients: Protocol and Baseline Characteristics of the Monitoring in Dialysis Study.

BACKGROUND: Dialysis patients have high rates of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but data on arrhythmia burden, arrhythmia type, arrhythmia triggers, and the identity of terminal arrhythmias have historically been limited by an inability to monitor heart rhythm for prolonged periods. OBJECTIVES: To investigate arrhythmia and its association with sudden death in dialysis-dependent ESRD, describe the potential for implantable devices to advance study of dialysis physiology, review the ethical implications of using implantable devices in clinical studies, and report on the protocol and b

Non-contact respiration monitoring for in-vivo murine micro computed tomography: characterization and imaging applications.

A cone beam micro-CT has previously been utilized along with a pressure-tracking respiration sensor to acquire prospectively gated images of both wild-type mice and various adult murine disease models. While the pressure applied to the abdomen of the subject by this sensor is small and is generally without physiological effect, certain disease models of interest, as well as very young animals, are prone to atelectasis with added pressure, or they generate too weak a respiration signal with this method to achieve optimal prospective gating. In this work we present a new fibre-optic displacement

Physiology and behavior of dogs during air transport.

Twenty-four beagles were used to measure physiological and behavioral reactions to air transport. Each of 3 groups of 4 sedated (with 0.5 mg/kg body weight of acepromazine maleate) and 4 non-sedated (control) dogs was flown on a separate flight between Montreal, Quebec, and Toronto, Ontario, after being transported by road from Quebec City to Montreal. Saliva and blood samples were taken before ground and air transport and after air transport. The heart rate was monitored during the whole experiment except during ground transport, and behavior was monitored by video during air transport. Sedat

Trivial Blunt Chest Trauma Leading to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in a Child.

Both blunt and penetrating chest trauma in children are less common than in adults but cause severe acute morbidity and mortality. As the literature suggests, pulmonary contusion is the most common chest injury in children, occurring in more than half of all blunt chest trauma cases. Even patients with blunt injuries are likely to have a longer hospital stay. The difference in physiological and anatomical variations in children compared to adults makes it more difficult from the diagnosis, management, and monitoring perspectives. A thorough physical examination is needed with close clinical mo

Prehospital Normoventilation in Critically Ill Anaesthetised Patients Cannot Be Reliably Monitored by Capnography-A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: End-tidal carbon dioxide capnography (EtCO2) is widely used to guide intubated patients' ventilation. Current guidelines for prehospital advanced airway management assume a gradient of approximately 0.67 kPa between EtCO2 and arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaCO2). However, concerns have been raised about the accuracy of capnography. We aimed to assess the agreement between EtCO2 and PaCO2 in different patient groups to see if EtCO2 could be accurate enough to guide ventilation during prehospital care. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of all anaesthetised an

An All-in-One-Integrated Self-Powered Wearable Sensing System for Multimodal Health Monitoring.

The integration of multimodal sensors, energy harvesting, and storage modules facilitates the advancement of intelligent wearable electronic products. However, existing modular construction strategies have low integration levels, leading to cumbersome devices that may compromise the stability and reliability of signal acquisition. Here, we propose an all-in-one design strategy by integrating the three modules into a single polymer substrate prepared via laser-induced graphene technology to construct a fully integrated self-powered multimodal sensing system. This sensing system consists of bioe

The effect of intracranial pressure monitoring on severe traumatic brain injury patients who undergo subdural hematoma evacuation.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is frequently employed for patients with severe traumatic brain injury. The effect of intracranial pressure monitoring on patient outcomes has been studied little, and results often fail to account for confounding variables. We sought to focus on the impact of ICP monitoring on patients with severe traumatic brain injury and subdural hematoma (SDH) that underwent surgical intervention. Using the National Trauma Data Bank, we identified patients between 2021 and 2024 who had SDH and a presenting Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 3-8 who underwent an SDH evacuati

Using Wearable Devices to Monitor Activity and Sleep in Inpatients With Parkinson Disease With and Without Delirium: Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a serious condition characterized by an acute change in attention, arousal, and sleep disturbance. It is common in inpatients with Parkinson disease (PD) but is frequently missed or misidentified due to overlapping symptoms, such as cognitive impairment, hallucinations, and sleep disturbances. While clinical tools often measure only a snapshot of delirium, wearable devices could facilitate the identification and ongoing monitoring of delirium, including continuous assessment of activity and sleep patterns, which are frequently disrupted. Establishing feasibility is esse
