BACKGROUND: Candida (Candidozyma) auris is an emerging yeast that poses a significant global health threat due to its multidrug resistance and ability to cause healthcare-associated outbreaks. Genomic surveillance is essential for monitoring spread, transmission and antifungal resistance.
OBJECTIVES: To report the first identification and genomic characterisation of C. auris in the state of Minas Gerais, Southeast Brazil, and to investigate the genetic origin and diversity, resistance-associated mutations, and potential transmission dynamics during a hospital outbreak.
METHODS: Eight C. auri

BACKGROUND: Taste dysfunction is a common symptom of oral candidiasis; however, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether Candida albicans carriage, particularly its hyphal phenotype, is associated with impaired taste sensitivity.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Fifty-seven participants were divided into three groups: noncarriers (n = 20), carriers without hyphae (n = 20), and carriers with hyphae (n = 17). Tongue biofilm samples were collected for Candida culture and smear tests. Salivary flow rates were measured, and taste sensitivity was assessed using

BACKGROUND: Fluconazole-resistant Candida parapsilosis is a matter of concern.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate fluconazole resistance among Candida parapsilosis complex isolates from patients admitted to three Brazilian hospitals, and to characterise resistance mechanisms and clonal relatedness.
PATIENTS/METHODS: A total of 76 C. parapsilosis complex isolates were collected from 60 patients hospitalised at three medical centres (H1-H3) located in Vitória, Espírito Santo state (2017-2023). Of these, 38 isolates were obtained from bloodstream cultures, four from catheter tips and 34 from an ICU sur

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast demonstrating remarkable persistence in healthcare environments, contributing to nosocomial transmission and outbreak persistence. Increasing disinfectant failure reports have raised concerns regarding infection control policies, as environmental reservoirs play central roles in its spread. We reviewed experimental studies, environmental surveillance reports, and comparative disinfection efficacy data to summarise interactions between C. auris and commonly used biocidal classes: chlorine-based oxidizers, alcohol formulations, biguanides, a

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is a globally emerging multidrug-resistant fungus. Its dissemination is driven by patient movement and asymptomatic carriers. However, molecular epidemiological studies linking imported cases to local strains in large metropolitan areas remain limited.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the molecular epidemiology and resistance mechanisms of 33 clinical isolates in Shanghai and propose an integrated infection control strategy tailored to metropolitan healthcare settings.
METHODS: Isolates from 19 patients were identified via MALDI-TOF MS and sequencing. Antifungal susceptibilit

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis remains one of the most prevalent superficial fungal infections worldwide, increasingly complicated by the emergence of terbinafine-resistant Trichophyton indotineae. Despite its global spread, molecular and clinical data from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remain limited.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted the first comprehensive molecular and phenotypic characterization of dermatophyte infections in the UAE to define the local epidemiology, antifungal resistance patterns and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Between September 2024 and March 2025, 33 consecutive clinical dermato

BACKGROUND: Invasive candidiasis (IC), life-threatening fungal infections with high economic burden, are often treated first-line with daily intravenous echinocandins. A new once weekly echinocandin, rezafungin, demonstrated statistically non-inferior efficacy and numerically shorter intensive care unit (ICU) stay compared to caspofungin in clinical trials, offering potential for earlier discharge.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of rezafungin versus daily echinocandins for the treatment of IC from a UK healthcare perspective.
METHODS: An economic model was developed including a

BACKGROUND: Echinocandins are the first-line treatment for invasive candidiasis. Rezafungin is a novel echinocandin with improved pharmacokinetic properties that allow for once-weekly intravenous administration, offering potential advantages in complex clinical settings.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe our real-world experience with rezafungin for the treatment of invasive fungal disease (IFD).
PATIENTS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive patients treated with rezafungin for proven IFD at our center between September 2022 and December 2025 was conducted.
RESULTS: We included 13 patien

BACKGROUND: Candida species are common causes of nosocomial infections. Candida parapsilosis has emerged as an important pathogen. Mortality rates associated with invasive C. parapsilosis infections range from 14.5% to 47%, with azole resistance estimated between 4% and 15%. Resistance mechanisms include mutations in ERG11 that diminish azole binding, upregulation of ergosterol biosynthesis genes due to mutations in regulatory factors like UPC2 and NDT80, and increased efflux pump activity.
METHODS: Thirty clinical strains of the C. parapsilosis complex were isolated from bloodstream cultures

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Candida tropicalis isolation is increasing in hospital settings. High azole resistance and mortality rates make it a pathogen that requires further analysis.
METHODS: Fourteen azole resistant Candida glabrata clinical isolates were collected from a Lebanese hospital and analysed through whole genome sequencing for single nucleotide polymorphisms in key resistance and virulence genes, and for phylogenetic relatedness. Isolates were then characterised for pathogenicity related attributes.
RESULTS: All isolates had Lys314Glu mutation in ERG20 with multiple isolates
