Using a site visit to a contaminated location as a focus for environmental health education for academic and public health nurses.

We describe a conference initiative that is distinguished by the use of a "community case study" to increase the knowledge and skills of nursing faculty and public health nurses in environmental health and to provide networking support to facilitate infusion of environmental health into nursing curricula and public health nursing practice. The Institute of Medicine's (1995) general environmental health competencies for nurses provided the conference framework. Woburn, Massachusetts, a Superfund site, served as the community case study to illustrate a complex environmental health problem. Over

Identifying Interventions to Improve Diagnostic Safety in Emergency Departments: Protocol for a Participatory Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) are complex and fast-paced clinical settings where a diagnosis is made in a time-, information-, and resource-constrained context. Thus, it is predisposed to suboptimal diagnostic outcomes, leading to errors and subsequent patient harm. Arriving at a timely and accurate diagnosis is an activity that occurs after an effective collaboration between the patient or caregiver and the clinical team within the ED. Interventions such as novel sociotechnical solutions are needed to mitigate errors and risks. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify challenges that

A rapid assessment and response approach for socially marketed nutrition commodities in Viet Nam.

BACKGROUND: The leading cause of death in children in developing countries is protein-energy malnutrition. In Viet Nam, 25.9% of children under 5 experience stunted growth and 6.6% are moderately wasted. Iron deficiency anaemia and vitamin A deficiency contribute to these and other malnutrition conditions. OBJECTIVES: Given these factors, more evidence based approaches are required to improve understanding of current attitudes, opinions and behaviours of mothers with young children, in order to operationalise social marketing of nutrition commodities in Viet Nam. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A

T-Cell Lymphoma: Recent Advances in Characterization and New Opportunities for Treatment.

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are uncommon, heterogeneous, and aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Despite progress in the last several years resulting in a deeper understanding of PTCL biology and pathogenesis, there is currently no accepted single standard of care for newly diagnosed patients, and for those with relapsed or refractory disease, prognosis is dismal. The National Cancer Institute convened a Clinical Trials Planning Meeting to advance the national clinical trial agenda in lymphoma. The objective was to identify unmet needs specific to five major lymphoma subtypes and devel

Creating a science of homelessness during the Reagan era.

UNLABELLED: POLICY POINTS: A retrospective analysis of federally funded homeless research in the 1980s serves as a case study of how politics can influence social and behavioral science research agendas today in the United States. These studies of homeless populations, the first funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, demonstrated that only about a third of the homeless population was mentally ill and that a diverse group of people experienced homelessness. This groundbreaking research program set the mold for a generation of research and policy characterizing homelessness as primar

[Different name, same meaning? Comparative effectiveness research and patient-centered outcomes research in the USA].

In 2009 the Congress of the USA commissioned a program on "Comparative Effectiveness Research" (CER) for two years. The program was funded with 1.1 billion USD and aims at projects that are directly relevant for the care of patients, investigate research questions and populations where research gaps are considerable, and which compare at least two interventions. Three years later it seems that in the USA CER has been replaced by "Patient-Centered Outcomes Research" (PCOR). This article summarizes the conceptual and empirical development of CER since 2009 and looks at the similarities and diffe
