Step Length and Gait Speed Estimation Using a Hearing Aid Integrated Accelerometer: A Comparison of Different Algorithms.

Gait is an indicator of a person's health status and abnormal gait patterns are associated with a higher risk of falls, dementia, and mental health disorders. Wearable sensors facilitate long-term assessment of walking in the user's home environment. Earables, wearable sensors that are worn at the ear, are gaining popularity for digital health assessments because they are unobtrusive and can easily be integrated into the user's daily routine, for example, in hearing aids. A comprehensive gait analysis pipeline for an ear-worn accelerometer that includes spatial-temporal parameters is currently

Computational mechanisms underlying cortical responses to the affordance properties of visual scenes.

Biologically inspired deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), trained for computer vision tasks, have been found to predict cortical responses with remarkable accuracy. However, the internal operations of these models remain poorly understood, and the factors that account for their success are unknown. Here we develop a set of techniques for using CNNs to gain insights into the computational mechanisms underlying cortical responses. We focused on responses in the occipital place area (OPA), a scene-selective region of dorsal occipitoparietal cortex. In a previous study, we showed that fMRI

Non-invasive hypoglycemia monitoring system using extreme learning machine for Type 1 diabetes.

Hypoglycemia is a very common in type 1 diabetic persons and can occur at any age. It is always threatening to the well-being of patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) since hypoglycemia leads to seizures or loss of consciousness and the possible development of permanent brain dysfunction under certain circumstances. Because of that, an accurate continuing hypoglycemia monitoring system is a very important medical device for diabetic patients. In this paper, we proposed a non-invasive hypoglycemia monitoring system using the physiological parameters of electrocardiography (ECG) signal.

Development and evaluation of an automatic acne lesion detection program using digital image processing.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Existing acne grading methods, which depend on overall impression, require a long training period and there is a high degree of variability among raters, including trained dermatologists. The use of lesion count provides fair reproducibility but the method is time consuming. New technologies in photographic equipment and software allow solutions to the problem of acne evaluation. This study was conducted to develop the automatic acne lesion program and evaluation of its usefulness. METHODS: We made the conditions to optimize characterization of acne lesions and developed t

Using a neural network for mining interpretable relationships of West Nile risk factors.

The West Nile Virus (WNV) is an infectious disease spreading rapidly throughout the United States, causing illness among thousands of birds, animals, and humans. Yet, we only have a rudimentary understanding of how the mosquito-borne virus operates in complex avian-human environmental systems. The four broad categories of risk factors underlying WNV incidences are: environmental (temperature, precipitation, wetlands), socioeconomic (housing age), built-environment (catch basins, ditches), and existing mosquito abatement policies. This research first built a model incorporating the non-linear r

Comparing a supervised and an unsupervised classification method for burst detection in neonatal EEG.

Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) using unsupervised and supervised training, respectively, were compared with respect to their ability to correctly classify burst and suppression in neonatal EEG. Each classifier was fed five feature signals extracted from EEG signals from six full term infants who had suffered from perinatal asphyxia. Visual inspection of the EEG by an experienced electroencephalographer was used as the gold standard when training the SVM, and for evaluating the performance of both methods. The results are presented as receiver operating characteris

A demonstration that breast cancer recurrence can be predicted by neural network analysis.

Neural Network Analysis, a form of artificial intelligence, was successfully used to predict the clinical outcome of node-positive breast cancer patients. A Neural Network was trained to predict clinical outcome using prognostic information from 1008 patients. During training, the network received as input information tumor hormone receptor status, DNA index and S-phase determination by flow cytometry, tumor size, number of axillary lymph nodes involved with tumor, and age of the patient, as well as length of clinical followup, relapse status, and time of relapse. The ability of the trained Ne

A data-driven evaluation of optimization techniques in cell culture media.

MOTIVATION: Optimizing cell-culture media for cultivated meat and cellular agriculture is both experimentally demanding and expensive. Traditional approaches use Design of Experiments (DOE) to iterate through candidate formulations until a satisfactory medium emerges. Data-driven methods, and in particular Bayesian optimization (BO), can reach higher objective function values (here, titer) with fewer evaluations than classical DOE. Prior comparisons of optimizers on cell-media data have, however, relied largely on computational simulations rather than measured formulations, leaving researchers

Low myometrial glycogen content compared with rectus muscle in term pregnant women before labor.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first observed in Wuhan, China, and quickly propagated worldwide. It is considered the supreme crisis of the present era and one of the most crucial hazards threatening worldwide health. Therefore, the early detection of COVID-19 is essential. The common way to detect COVID-19 is the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, although it has several drawbacks. Computed tomography (CT) scans can enable the early detection of suspected patients, however, the overlap between patterns of COVID-19 and other types of pneumonia makes it difficult for rad

Harnessing the Power of Technology to Transform Delirium Severity Measurement in the Intensive Care Unit: Protocol for a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium, an acute brain dysfunction, is a complication in up to 50% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Measuring and mitigating delirium severity can reduce associated morbidity and improve long-term health outcomes post discharge. However, the perceived complexity of the available delirium detection tools and clinical workload limits the routine assessment of delirium severity. Developing a passive digital marker for delirium severity, combining routine electronic health record (EHR) and computer vision technology data, could be an implementable, scalable, and sustaina

3-D ordinal regression CNN for opportunistic breast density grading on chest CT.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer has the highest incidence and second-highest mortality burden of all cancers in women. Breast density, the extent of fibroglandular tissue within the breast, is strongly associated with breast cancer risk, and is visually graded on a four-level ordinal scale on imaging studies including chest CT. However, current automated methods for CT breast density assessment are limited, relying on semi-automated breast segmentation followed by intensity thresholding, and excluding higher-order image features. In this work, we train and evaluate a 3-D convolutional neural net (3D

A machine learning approach to identify active polysorbate 20 degrading hydrolases in biopharmaceutical formulations.

Polysorbate degradation by host cell-derived hydrolases presents a critical challenge in biopharmaceutical formulations. It can lead to fatty acid release, particle formation and reduced product stability. Mass spectrometry-based host cell protein (HCP) analysis is widely used for HCP identification, but detection becomes challenging in formulations where monoclonal antibodies are present in large excess. In such cases, hydrolases can remain undetected, despite being enzymatically active at trace levels. In this study, we demonstrate that individual CHO-derived hydrolases generate distinct pol

Unsupervised 1D CNN -bidirectional long short-term memory model with multi-head attention for generating intravoxel incoherent motion maps.

BACKGROUND: Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging, a diffusion magnetic resonance imaging technique, is commonly used to quantify tissue perfusion and diffusion. Traditional pixel-by-pixel fitting methods, however, often suffer from high noise, causing unreliable parameter estimates. PURPOSE AND METHODS: To address this issue, a novel unsupervised learning-based framework combining a one-dimensional (1D) convolutional neural network (CNN) with a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network and a multi-head attention mechanism (MHAM) was proposed. Several techniques were propose

A deep learning approach for analyzing brainwave signals during audio meditation in expectant mothers: variational mode decomposition with a CNN-BiLSTM model.

Meditation has increasingly been recognized as a helpful non-pharmacological intervention to treat psychological stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy-a period that plays a significant role in maternal and fetal health. Although very popular, there is very little scientific evidence on how brief audio meditation affects brain activity in pregnant women. This work reports an EEG-based method to objectively investigate the neural effect of short-term audio meditation in pregnant women with the aid of sophisticated signal decomposition and deep learning methods. External Validation Complexities: A Comparative Study of Late-Onset Sepsis Prediction Models Across Multiple Clinical Environments.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal late-onset sepsis (LOS) is a life-threatening condition in preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), with early detection being crucial for improving outcomes. Despite advancements in data-driven prediction models, their generalizability remains uncertain due to a lack of independent validation, particularly on national and international scales. This study evaluates the performance of two LOS prediction models on multiple validation datasets to assess their reliability for clinical implementation. METHODS: Two models were validated: (1) a multi-channel feat

Optimization of esterase production from Monascus purpureus Y146 by artificial neural network-genetic algorithm and its application in flavor enhancement of fermented wine.

Esterases play an important role in flavor regulation during food fermentation. In this study, a high esterase-producing strain, Monascus purpureus Y146, was used to optimize esterase production via one-factor-at-a-time experiments (OFAT), response surface methodology (RSM), and an artificial neural network with genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) approach. The esterase was partially purified and characterized, and its application in rice wine fermentation was evaluated using HS-SPME-GC-MS. The results showed that the esterase activity of the Y146 strain reached up to 1248.02 U/mL, a 4.68-fold increase
