A picture of health: determining the core population served by an urban NHS hospital trust and understanding the key health needs.

BACKGROUND: NHS hospitals do not have clearly defined geographic populations to whom they provide care, with patients able to attend any hospital. Identifying a core population for a hospital trust, particularly those in urban areas where there are multiple providers and high population churn, is essential to understanding local key health needs especially given the move to integrated care systems. This can enable effective planning and delivery of preventive interventions and community engagement, rather than simply treating those presenting to services. In this article we describe a practica

Cultural background and instrument timbre shape emotional and EEG responses to a familiar Middle Eastern melody in Maqam Saba: a crossover clinical trial with implications for music therapy.

Music-based interventions are gaining traction in therapeutic settings, yet evidence remains centered on Western music and populations. This gap is particularly important for Middle Eastern populations, where the Maqam Melodic System-a tonal framework traditionally associated with specific emotions-remains unexplored using modern neuroscientific methods. The Maqam Saba, traditionally associated with sadness, contains quartertones absent from Western scales and unfamiliar to non-Arab listeners, raising the question of whether its emotional associations are universal or culturally specific. This

Development and validation of a simple prostate cancer risk prediction model based on age, family history, and polygenic risk.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prostate cancer risk assessment will enable identification of men who are at increased risk of the disease. Using the UK Biobank population-based cohort, we developed and validated a simple model comprising age, family history, and a polygenic risk score (PRS) to predict 5-year risk of prostate cancer. METHODS: Eligible participants were unaffected Caucasian men aged 40-69 years at their baseline assessment who had genotyping data available and had completed 6 or more weeks of follow-up. Family history was the number of affected first-degree relatives: 0, 1, or 2+. We use

Monitoring of human exposure to radiation with the binucleated lymphocyte micronucleus assay.

The micronuclei (MN) of peripheral blood lymphocytes from radiation-exposed people were monitored with the binucleated lymphocyte micronucleus assay (CBMN). MN rates in people with radiation-disease, radiation exposed and a control group were 12.57/1000, 4.20/1000 and 3.26/1000, respectively. The MN rate of patients with radiation-disease was significantly higher than those of other groups (P < 0.01). The difference between the radiation-exposed group and control group was not significant (P > 0.05). Meanwhile, chromosome aberrations (CA) of 3 groups were determined. The results were similar t

Population structuring of the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) on a microgeographic scale.

Aedes albopictus is an invasive mosquito species that has spread globally and can transmit several arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The species was first reported in Brazil in 1986 and since then has been found in 24 of the 27 Brazilian states, often in peri-urban environments close to highly urbanized areas. To date, population genetics of this important mosquito in areas in the city of São Paulo has not been investigated. In this study, we used 12 microsatellite loci to investigate the microgeographic population genetics of Ae. albopictus, which is present through

Nocardiosis in persons with human immunodeficiency virus infection, transplant recipients, and large, geographically defined populations.

To quantify the risk of nocardiosis in various populations, I systematically reviewed articles published between 1966 and 2004. The incidence of nocardiosis in 3 large, geographically defined populations ranged from 0.35 to 0.4 cases per 10(5) persons year. In contrast, the incidence of nocardiosis among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in 1 study was 53 nocardiosis cases per 10(5) persons x year, approximately 140 times greater than that in the geographically defined populations. The frequency of nocardiosis cases in 4 popul

Health status of the New York City prison population.

During a two-week period in June 1975, all 1,420 prisoners admitted to New York City Correctional Facilities were studied to determine the prevalence of current and past health conditions. Information was obtained from a standard admission health examination. Almost three-quarters of the male and female prisoners were 30 years or less. Of the study population, 57 per cent were black, 24 per cent were Hispanic and 17 per cent were white. Forty-one per cent reported a history of illicit drug use. More than one-quarter of the prisoners reported a present illness and three-fifths received at least

Key factors for an equitable health intervention for Black men with low income and chronic illness in a southern state in the United States.

Black men's health continues to be worse than that of many other groups in the United States. This study's purpose was to explore interest holders' perceptions about an intervention proposed to use universal basic income (UBI) to facilitate healthcare access and promote health equity of Black men with chronic conditions, including HIV, and low incomes in a southern state. Semi-structured interviews with 31 interest holders, including members of the priority population, were conducted via phone or Zoom. Pre-implementation factors were identified using the Socioecological Model as a framework fo

Radiological analysis of the sagittal profile of the Colombian population according to the theoretical Roussouly classification.

BACKGROUND: The theoretical Roussouly classification describes sagittal spinal profiles based on pelvic morphology. As most reference data originate from Caucasian populations, its applicability to Hispanic populations remains limited. This study aimed to describe sagittal spinal alignment in an asymptomatic Colombian population using the theoretical Roussouly classification. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed whole-spine standing radiographs (2020-2024) from asymptomatic adults aged 18-50 years at Clínica Tolima. Spinopelvic parameters were measured using Surgimap, and s

"We know this will be hard at the beginning, but better in the long term": understanding PrEP uptake in the general population in Eswatini.

Information regarding HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the general population is largely lacking, because the majority of PrEP demonstration projects have focused on key populations. This qualitative study examines barriers and facilitators to PrEP uptake and adherence among the general population in Eswatini, where PrEP is offered through public-sector primary-care clinics. We analysed 106 semi-structured in-depth interviews with healthcare workers (n = 26), stakeholders (n = 30), and clients who initiated, continued, declined or discontinued PrEP (n = 50). Some healthcare workers and

Estimating and mapping the incidence of giardiasis in Colombia, 2009-2013.

BACKGROUND: Giardiasis is one of the most common intestinal infections in the world. There have been no national studies on the morbidity of giardiasis in Colombia. In this study, incidence rates of giardiasis were estimated for the years 2009-2013. METHODS: An observational, retrospective study of the giardiasis incidence in Colombia, 2009-2013, was performed using data extracted from the personal health records system (Registro Individual de Prestación de Servicios, RIPS). Official population estimates from the National Department of Statistics (DANE) were used for the estimation of crude a

The epidemiology of lymphatic filariasis in Ghana, explained by the possible existence of two strains of Wuchereria bancrofti.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic filariasis is a debilitating disease caused by the filarial worm Wuchereria bancrofti. It is earmarked for elimination by the year 2020 through the Global Program for the Elimination of LF (GPELF). In Ghana, mass treatment has been on-going since the year 2000. Earlier studies have revealed differing epidemiology of LF in the North and South of Ghana. This study was therefore aimed at understanding the possible impacts of W. bancrofti diversity on the epidemiology and control of LF in Ghana. METHODS: The Mitochondrial, Cytochrome C Oxidase I gene of W. bancrofti sample

Flow cytometry analysis of atherosclerotic plaque cells from human carotids: a validation study.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerotic plaques are heterogeneous vascular lesions. Changes in cell plaque composition are fundamental events inside the plaque microenvironment that are strictly related to the clinical outcome of these lesions (organ damage). The knowledge of these modifications may help to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of atherosclerosis. METHODS: We report on a flow cytometry method to characterize and quantify the cell subpopulations in human atherosclerotic plaques. Cells were obtained from endarterectomy specimens after collagenase digestion. Both surface and i

Age and sex disparities in drug shortage impacts: a 10-year nationwide study in France.

Drug shortages are a growing public health issue, unevenly impacting therapeutic classes. Despite variations in drug consumption across populations, the consequences of these shortages on different patient groups remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated age and sex profiles of patients consuming the therapeutic classes most commonly affected by drug shortages in France. The age and sex risk of shortage exposure were estimated in a nationwide retrospective study of French patients between 2014 and 2023, using data from the French drug shortage notification system and the nat

Diversity in Surgery: Ethnic, Gender, and LGBTQ+ Representations Among United Kingdom Surgical Residents and Consultants.

BACKGROUND: Diversity within the surgical workforce is not just a matter of equity, but a determinant of quality in patient care. Studies consistently show that diverse healthcare teams achieve better outcomes, higher patient satisfaction, and improved team functioning. By asking users of the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) to complete a survey on demographic characteristics we have been able to report diversity amongst surgical trainees and consultant trainers in the UK and Republic of Ireland for the first time. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of anony
