The current study uses structural equation modeling to investigate factors associated with alcohol initiation and injection heroin use. Baseline data from the NEURO-HIV Epidemiologic Study in Baltimore, Maryland, were used. Participants were 404 injection heroin users (M(age) = 32.72) with a history of regular injection in their lifetime. Latent variables were created for self-reported school problems and academic failure. The final model indicated that greater school problems were associated with earlier alcohol initiation (ß = -0.22, p < .001) and earlier alcohol initiation was associated wi

Two national U.S. telephone surveys of gambling were conducted, an adult survey (age 18 and over, N = 2,631) in 1999-2000 and a youth (age 14-21, N = 2,274) survey in 2005-2007. The data from these surveys were combined to examine the prevalence of any gambling, frequent gambling and problem gambling across the lifespan. These types of gambling involvement increased in frequency during the teens, reached a high level in the respondents' 20s and 30s, and then fell off in as the respondents aged. The notion that gambling involvement generally, and especially problem gambling, is most prevalent d

We examined the diagnostic specificity of interpersonal problems (IP) in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We expected generally higher interpersonal distress, and specifically higher levels of nonassertive, exploitable, overly nurturant, and intrusive behavior in n = 58 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition GAD compared with patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (n = 46), other anxiety disorders (n = 47), and unipolar depressive disorders (n = 47). IP were assessed with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Specificity in the sense of hei

This study examined why some preschool-age children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) showed deleterious outcomes and others appeared more resilient. Resilience, conceptualized as strengths in emotion regulation and prosocial skills, was evaluated using the Social Competence Scale developed by the Conduct Problem Prevention Research Group. The sample consisted of 56 mothers and their 4- to 6-year-old children exposed to IPV within the past 2 years. After controlling for relevant demographic factors, hierarchical regression analyses indicated that better parenting performance, fewer ma

Although youth with internalizing symptoms experience friendship difficulties, surprisingly little is known about their problematic interpersonal behaviors. The current observational study identifies a new construct, conversational self-focus, defined as the tendency to direct the focus of conversations to the self and away from others. Results indicated that youth with internalizing symptoms were especially likely to engage in self-focus when discussing problems with friends and that doing so was related to their friends perceiving the relationship as lower in quality, particularly helping. Phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism are the inherited metabolic diseases that can be diagnosed and successfully treated early from birth. Nevertheless, children with phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism are found to be in the risk for psychological maladjustment. Parental adjustment - as significant condition for child's psychological adjustment--and related factors are explored in this study. Parents of 63 children with congenital hypothyroidism and phenylketonuria (age 2 to 14 years) answered the Child Behavior Checklist, Coping Strategies Questionnaire and the questionnai

Longitudinal data were used to investigate whether anxiety, depressive, disruptive, personality, or substance use disorders are associated with risk for the development of eating disorders during adolescence or early adulthood. Psychiatric disorders were assessed among 726 youths from a random community sample during adolescence and early adulthood. Depressive disorders during early adolescence were associated with elevated risk for the onset of eating disorders, dietary restriction, purging behavior, and recurrent weight fluctuations after preexisting eating problems and other psychiatric dis

In this study, we compare health risks of adolescents with disordered eating to those of their peers without disordered eating. A self-report health survey from a community sample of 1769 high school students was used to compare emotional, medical, and social behaviors of these two groups. Risk data for disordered eating students was compared within and across genders. Adolescents with disordered eating are at increased risk for emotional and physical health problems compared to their peers. Overall health risks for boys and girls with disordered eating are quite similar. However, boys with di

Patients entering a 4-week inpatient alcoholism treatment program were screened for anxiety symptoms. Those with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were randomly assigned to two groups. The treatment group received 12 hours of cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for panic disorder in addition to the regular alcoholism treatment program: the control group received the regular program. Dropouts from the treatment group were also followed. Problem drinking and anxiety symptoms were measured at the start of the study, and at 3, 6, and 12 months posttreatment. Abstinence from drinking, and

This article examines therapy with a Bedouin-Arab family from the Negev, Israel, which consisted of 69 members: a husband, 8 wives, and 60 siblings. The husband, who lived with his youngest wife, paid little attention to his other wives and their children. There was considerable competition, hostility, and jealousy among the wives; no communication between the co-wives or the children of different wives; and a variety of behavioral and psychosocial problems among family members. I describe the varied strategies and systems involved in family therapy. The main strategies were to establish good

A growing body of research suggests a link between psychosocial factors and breast cancer. Research in this area often contains methodological problems, however, such as small sample size, inadequate comparison groups, omission of important control variables, inclusion of only a few psychosocial variables, and failure to analyze moderating effects. To overcome these problems, the present study examined the link between breast cancer and multiple psychosocial variables (life events, coping, Type A behavior pattern, availability of social support) among 1,052 women with and without breast cancer

BACKGROUND: The Roma population, one of the largest minority groups in Europe, experience discrimination and stigma associated with marginalized social position. Few studies have examined mental illnesses in the Roma, and none have examined the Roma children. The present study estimates mental health and behavioral disorders among Roma children in comparison to non-Roma children in educational institutions.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the School Children Mental Health Study in Europe (SCHME) study in Romania (Roma children identified by parent report, N = 70; non-Roma, N = 925) and Bulgaria

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome spectrum disorders (NSSDs) constitute a group within the Rasopathies, and are one of the largest groups of syndromes with impact on multi-organ involvement known. The extreme variability of the clinical phenotype is, among others, due to the numerous different genes that are involved, and the differences in clinical presentation over the life span. We have studied the needs of patients and their relatives aiming to develop, evaluate and choose focus in research, medical care and policy to better meet their perspectives.
METHODS: Using the participatory and interact

PROBLEM: Priority health-risk behaviors, which are behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults, often are established during childhood and adolescence, extend into adulthood, and are interrelated and preventable.
REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: September 2008- December 2009.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM: The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults: 1) behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; 2) tobacco use; 3) alcohol and other d

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Alternative high schools serve approximately 280,000 students nationwide who are at high risk for failing or dropping out of regular high school or who have been expelled from regular high school because of illegal activity or behavioral problems. Such settings provide important opportunities for delivering health promotion education and services to these youth and young adults. However, before this survey, the prevalence of health-risk behaviors among students attending alternative high schools nationwide was unknown.
REPORTING PERIOD: February-May 1998.

OBJECTIVE: Recent efforts to improve outcomes for young children with conduct problems and callous-unemotional (CU) traits involve adapting treatments to meet the unique needs of this subgroup. However, these efforts have ignored accumulating evidence for distinct primary and secondary variants within the CU subgroup. Existing treatment adaptations uniformly target risk factors associated with primary CU traits and no studies have investigated variant-specific patterns of responsiveness to treatment adaptations among young children with CU-type conduct problems.
METHOD: Participants were 45 f

(1) Background: Few studies have examined gestational paraben exposure and early childhood neurodevelopment. We evaluated associations between gestational exposure to methyl, ethyl and propyl paraben and neurodevelopment via the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) administered at ages 2, 3, and 4 years. (2) Methods: Gestational exposures were assessed using pooled prenatal urine samples from five time points across pregnancy. CBCL outcomes included internalizing, externalizing, and sub-scale scores. Covariate-adjusted generalized linear regression was employed to assess individual paraben exposure

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are clinically frequent and seriously affect the psychological and mental health of children and adolescents. However, most studies on LUTS and its influence on the psychological behavior and mental health have focused on adults. This study aimed to investigate LUTS prevalence and associated factors in children and adolescents and explore its impact on psychological behavior.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From October 2019 to November 2021, an epidemiological LUTS survey was carried out on 6,077 children aged 6-15 years old in 12 primary and secondary

BACKGROUND: Innovations in clinical training and support that enhance fidelity to evidence-based treatment (EBT) for adolescent behavior problems are sorely needed. This study will develop an online training system to address this gap: Measurement Training and Feedback System for Implementation (MTFS-I). Using procedures intended to be practical and sustainable, MTFS-I is designed to increase two aspects of therapist behavior that are fundamental to boosting EBT fidelity: therapist self-monitoring of EBT delivery, and therapist utilization of core techniques of EBTs in treatment sessions.
