Vitamin D and the Risk of Developing Hypertension in the SUN Project: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a higher risk of multiple diseases, including cardiovascular disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential association between predicted levels of serum 25(OH)D and the risk of new-onset hypertension in a large Mediterranean cohort. A validated 136-item food frequency questionnaire was used as the dietary assessment tool. 25(OH)D serum levels were predicted using a previously validated equation. We performed Cox regression models to analyze the association between predicted serum 25(OH)D and the risk of hypertension, according t

Lactate threshold evaluation in swimming using a sweat lactate sensor: A prospective study.

Since assessing aerobic capacity is key to enhancing swimming performance, a simple and widely applicable technology should be developed. Therefore, we aimed to noninvasively visualize real-time changes in sweat lactate (sLA) levels during swimming and investigate the relationship between lactate thresholds in sweat (sLT) and blood (bLT). This prospective study included 24 university swimmers (age: 20.7 s ± 1.8 years, 58% male) who underwent exercise tests at incremental speeds with or without breaks in a swimming flume to measure heart rate (HR), bLT, and sLT based on sLA levels using a water

Ultrathin bronchoscopy-guided small airway biopsy for diagnosing sarcoidosis: A prospective study.

New ultrathin bronchoscopes (UTBs) enable the inspection and biopsy of small airways, potentially offering diagnostic advantages in sarcoidosis. In this prospective study, patients with suspected sarcoidosis underwent airway inspection with a UTB. Observed airway abnormalities were categorised into six predefined patterns. UTB-directed small airway biopsies (SABs) were collected from the upper lobes following a standardised procedure. We evaluated the prevalence and patterns of SAAs, as well as the diagnostic yield of UTB-directed SAB. Among 79 participants, 65 (82.3%) were diagnosed with sarc

Predicting oral and esophageal cancers by one model in a Chinese prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Oral and esophageal cancers are both upper gastrointestinal cancers that share a number of risk factors. However, most previous risk prediction models only focused on one of these two types of cancer. There is no single model that could predict both cancers simultaneously. Our objective was to develop a model specifically tailored for oral and esophageal cancers. METHODS: From 1996 to 2007, a total of 431,460 subjects aged 20 and older without a history of cancer at baseline were included and were monitored for an average duration of 7.3 years in Taiwan, China. A total of 704 cases

The Role of Diet in Multiple Sclerosis Onset: A Prospective Study Using UK Biobank.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune condition primarily affecting young adults, and its rise is evident globally. Despite this, its precise etiology remains elusive. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to MS susceptibility; however, the link between diet and MS lacks substantial evidence due to limited large-scale studies. We exploited the UK Biobank resources to explore the nexus between diet, lifestyle, and MS risk. The dietary and lifestyle habits of MS incident cases, derived from a general food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) completed by all participants at s
