INTRODUCTION: Ulnar nerve injury in closed both bone forearm fracture is rare. Most nerve injuries are neuropraxia and rarely the nerve is trapped or is transected. Most of the time recovery is spontaneous but sometimes requires surgical exploration. We are reporting a case of a 14-year-old boy with closed both bone forearm fracture with ulnar nerve palsy due to entrapment and laceration between ulnar bone fracture fragment.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy presented in emergency department elsewhere with a left forearm closed injury due to fall while playing where he was diagnosed with both bo

BACKGROUND: The ulnar styloid is an important supportive structure for the triangular fibrocartilage complex. However, it remains inconclusive whether or not a fractured ulnar styloid should be fixed in an unstable distal radius fracture (DRF) with a stable distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of an untreated ulnar styloid fracture on the outcome of unstable DRF treated with transarticular external fixation when the DRUJ is stable.
METHODS: 106 patients with an unstable DRF and a stable DRUJ were included in this study following external fixation

BACKGROUND: "Floating forearm" injuries, perilunate injuries, with an elbow dislocation, are rare and challenging to treat.
METHODS: We present the case of an unusual variant of a floating forearm injury, trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation and elbow dislocation, with a concomitant open both-bone forearm fracture after a fall from a ladder. Treatment involved irrigation and debridement of the forearm wound, open reduction and internal fixation of the forearm and perilunate injury, and closed reduction of the elbow.
RESULTS: At final follow-up, he had returned to his previous occup

There are severe bony lesions in trauma and orthopedic surgery which are difficult to stabilize with all the well known methods. The use of a ASIF-plate applied as an external fixation can be a good alternative in exceptional situations. Those cases are discussed.

PURPOSE: The primary objective was to describe the reasons for surgical re-intervention after radial head arthroplasty. The secondary objective was to analyze the radiographic and clinical outcomes after surgical re-intervention at the elbow with implant conservation.
METHODS: Among the 70 radial head arthroplasties with bipolar radial head implant performed between 2002 and 2014, 29 required surgical re-interventions. Reasons for surgical re-intervention were gathered from operative notes and follow-up documentation. Patients who underwent re-intervention with implant retention were reassess

Mycobacterium bollettii, a subset of the group M. abscessus, is a slow-growing, nontuberculous mycobacterium that was first characterized in the early 2000s. We report a case of M. bollettii infection in an otherwise healthy 49-year-old man who sustained an open fracture of the right distal radius. After his initial surgery, the patient presented 1 month later with wound drainage requiring hardware removal and was treated with intravenous antibiotics. However, there was a persistent infection. We treated his osteomyelitis with debridement and placement of amikacin antibiotic beads. We selected

Volar instability of the distal radioulnar joint is an uncommon wrist disorder. We report three cases of recurrent volar instability of the distal radioulnar joint secondary to fracture of the radial shaft. In all cases, X-rays showed a volar apex deformity of the radial shaft. Opening wedge osteotomy and iliac bone grafting was performed on the distal diaphysis of the radius instead of on the radial shaft, in order to adjust the distal radioulnar joint more easily. Pre-operative dislocations and painful clunks disappeared in all three patients. However, slight instability of the distal radiou

A dorsal plate for the distal radius was designed to provide rigid fixation and thus allow early motion. It functions as a blade plate, lessening the role of metaphyseal screws, and providing internal neutralization rather than compression. The rigidity and strength of the plate were compared to the existing T-plate in an unstable, extra-articular fracture model in paired, fresh-cadaver, axially loaded radii. The dorsal plate construct was significantly stronger and more rigid than the T-plate construct. The failure mode was similar for both plate types; 8 of 10 constructs failed with plate be

The Microarchitecture Fracture Risk Assessment Calculator ([Formula: see text]FRAC) was developed to predict osteoporotic fracture risk using direct measures of bone microarchitecture. However, its performance has not yet been externally validated in women. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the [Formula: see text]FRAC model in predicting osteoporotic fracture risk in a cohort of older women. The performance of [Formula: see text]FRAC was assessed in a population of 2307 postmenopausal women aged 75-80 yr in Gothenburg, Sweden. All participants underwent HR-pQCT scanning of the dis

BACKGROUND: The rapid and accurate diagnosis of fractures is crucial for timely treatment of trauma patients. Deep learning, one of the most widely used forms of artificial intelligence (AI), is now commonly employed in medical imaging for fracture detection. This study aimed to construct a deep learning model using big data to recognize multiple-fracture X-ray images of extremity bones.
METHODS: Radiographic imaging data of extremities were retrospectively collected from five hospitals between January 2017 and September 2020. The total number of people finally included was 25,635 and the tot

Background: Trauma-related injuries are among the most common reasons for paediatric hospital presentations and represent a substantial component of orthopaedic care. Their management poses unique challenges due to ongoing skeletal development in children. While most reported fractures occur at home or during sports, prior studies have primarily used data from urban European populations, limiting the relevance of their findings for rural and regional settings. Urban-centred research often informs public healthcare guidelines, treatment algorithms, and infrastructure planning, introducing a bia

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The incidence of geriatric fractures (proximal femur, distal radius, proximal humerus and thoracolumbar spine injuries) in the population increases with ageing. However, the role of weather conditions, such as icy and slippery winter, should not be overlooked. A deeper insight into this relationship may bring about a better understanding of the fracture aetiology and thus allow for improvement in the prevention of fractures in elderly people. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study included 676 patients (469 women and 207 men) aged 65 and over. Relationships between th

We treated nineteen patients with concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the humerus and forearm resulting in a so-called floating elbow. The injuries that were treated without open reduction and internal fixation had a high incidence of non-union of the humerus. This has led us to prefer open reduction and internal fixation of both the humerus and the forearm fracture.
