INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Retina is a privileged tissue to study the central nervous system (CNS) due to the disposition of different cell types and synaptic plexus. Moreover, the retina and the optic nerve are accessible for manipulation and surgery. Neuronal consequences of axotomy have been widely studied in this portion of the CNS. This paper offers a brief review of the morphological changes experienced by axotomized cells. We show these consequences in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) injured by optic nerve section.

Methylmethacrylate castings of the eye microvasculature were prepared from 10 Spargue-Dawley rats and studied by electron microscopy. The choroidal arterioles are larger in diameter than retinal arterioles, and have a shorter course to choroidal capillaries than retinal arterioles to retinal capillaries. DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative case series.

PURPOSE: To determine if photoreceptors die in primary open-angle glaucoma.
METHODS: Retinas were examined in a masked fashion from nine standard locations of 14 eyes with documented open-angle glaucoma and from nine age-matched control eyes. The optic nerve of many perciform fish is ribbon-shaped, and axons from ganglion cells in specific parts of the retina are consistently found in specific places in this ribbon. I utilized this organization to fill selected groups of axons with horseradish peroxidase. I then traced these groups of axons through the nerve and across the tectum to their terminal arbors. Tick typhus causes hemorrhagic lesions over the skin. Retina also shows hemorrhages and exudates. Many cases have been reported in western literature about this condition.
