Recording living and postmortem friction ridge patterns using image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method.

Recording friction ridge patterns is a critical step in personal identification, as only clear impressions can be reliably compared with database records. This study presents two approaches-image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method (FOM)-and compares them with frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR), ink, and powder methods to identify a simple and reliable workflow for forensic evidence collection. The results indicate that no single method is suitable for all fingerprint conditions; instead, a combination of complementary techniques is required. The rec

Integrated Photoacoustic-Metabolomic Platform for Multimodal Assessment of Sepsis-Induced Brain Dysfunction.

Sepsis-induced brain dysfunction (SIBD), a critical determinant of mortality and long-term neurological sequelae in sepsis patients. The mechanistic understanding of SIBD has been limited by conventional single-modality approaches, which fail to capture the complex oxygenation-metabolism interplay. Here, we present an integrated photoacoustic-metabolomic platform that combines high-resolution photoacoustic imaging with targeted metabolomics to comprehensively assess cerebral oxygenation and metabolic alterations during sepsis. Our imaging system provides high spatiotemporal resolution, enablin

Pigmented cereals as functional food systems: Linking phytochemistry, processing, and health.

This review combines the chemistry, processing and health-related aspects of anthocyanins in a single structure-processing function paradigm, limited to wheat, rice and maize, and evaluates the in vitro to human evidence in a logical framework. These compounds exhibit cereal-specific structural signatures: cyanidin-3-glucoside predominates across cereals like wheat, while maize displays the most complex glycosylation and acylation patterns. Preclinical and limited human evidence link pigmented cereal consumption to improved glycemic modulation (via inhibition of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes)

Genetic and non-genetic factors influencing phenotypic variability in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, is characterized by extensive clinical variability, posing significant challenges for prognosis and patient management. Despite being caused by mutations in a single gene, NF1, the expressivity of the disease ranges from mild cutaneous manifestations to severe, life-threatening complications, including malignant tumors, skeletal deformities, and cognitive impairments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the genetic determinants underlying this phenotypic heterogeneity. We begin by elucidating the molecular geneti

Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded: Metatheoretical Framework for Conceptualizing Dysfunctional Processes and Psychopathology.

Complex psychopathology, particularly when associated with adverse developmental experiences and complex trauma, involves multiple cognitive, affective, behavioral, interpersonal, and neurobiological processes that may be difficult to organize within single-theoretical or symptom-based models. The present paper introduces the Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded (TCM-XP), a transdiagnostic and metatheoretical framework developed to organize these processes within a developmental and integrative perspective. The TCM-XP comprises seven interrelated domains: Adverse and Dysfunctional Experie

Self-Powered Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Multi-Network Conductive Hydrogel for Kinetic Chain Monitoring in Badminton.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been widely explored for wearable motion monitoring, yet existing designs are mainly confined to single-site sensing, limiting their ability to capture coordinated multijoint movements. Here, a multinetwork conductive hydrogel with both robustness and conductivity was developed and further utilized to construct a TENG sensor, which demonstrated outstanding durability by maintaining stable output voltage over 3000 operating cycles with 6.8% signal decay after 15 days of storage (25 ± 2 °C), as well as rapid response and recovery times of 34 and 15 ms. Immunometabolic Modulation of the Bone Marrow Niche by Bioactive Materials to Rescue Impaired Fracture Healing.

Despite advancements in mechanical fixation, impaired fracture healing remains a significant clinical challenge, largely driven by immunometabolic dysregulation within the bone marrow niche. Conditions such as prolonged M1 macrophage activation, disrupted metabolic homeostasis, and mitochondrial dysfunction collectively stall the regenerative cascade and push skeletal progenitors toward senescence or adipogenesis. This review comprehensively explores the paradigm shift from purely mechanical stabilization to immunometabolic reprogramming using bioactive materials to rescue impaired bone repair

Hyperglycemia following pancreas transplantation: Rethinking graft function and metabolic control.

Pancreas transplantation (PTX) is the single most effective therapeutic option to restore sustained euglycemia and insulin independence in patients with insulin-requiring diabetes mellitus; however, recurrence of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus after PTX may occur. In this personal viewpoint, we propose a practical diagnostic and management framework for posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) and its distinction from pancreas graft failure (PGF) and other causes of hyperglycemia after PTX. PTDM after PTX is a distinct clinical entity from PGF, defined as persistent hyperglycemia in recipi

Perspective on the integration of radiomics and spatial omics in the analysis of the tumor microenvironment of bladder cancer and prospects for precision diagnosis and treatment.

Bladder cancer, a common malignant tumor of the urinary system, possesses a highly heterogeneous tumor immune microenvironment that critically influences disease progression, treatment response, and patient prognosis. The limitations of traditional tissue biopsies have spurred interest in non-invasive, dynamic, and spatially resolved assessment strategies. Radiomics enables non-invasive quantification of macroscopic tumor phenotypes through high-throughput extraction of medical imaging features, while spatial omics technologies, such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, reveal the fine-

Vaccine Therapy for the Management of Penile Cancer: Evidence, Opportunities and Challenges.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare malignancy with limited therapeutic options in advanced and recurrent diseases. Advanced PSCC is typically managed with multimodal therapy, including neoadjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiation followed by surgery; however, durable responses remain uncommon, and outcomes after recurrence are poor. Cancer vaccines represent a promising immunotherapeutic strategy, as these treatments induce tumor-specific immunity and heightened immune surveillance against penile cancer cells. While therapeutic cancer vaccines have not yet demonstrated consistent cl

Immune cells in liver transplantation: Dual roles, mechanistic insights, and targeted therapeutic strategies.

Liver transplantation is the most effective treatment for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure; however, organ shortage and transplant rejection remain key challenges limiting its development. In recent years, the unique role of immune cells in liver transplantation has provided new insights into the mechanisms of immune rejection and tolerance. The liver's unique immune microenvironment, dominated by innate immune cells, maintains immune tolerance through complex cell-cell interactions and cytokine networks. This article systematically reviews the dynamic roles of macrophages, neut

Ultrasound biomicroscopy and anterior segment OCT in ocular surface squamous neoplasia: complementary roles, case series, and targeted literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) encompasses a spectrum of epithelial malignancies of the conjunctiva and cornea that, untreated, may invade intraocularly or into the orbit. Clinical examination alone may fail to define true depth of invasion, risking under- or overtreatment. Advanced anterior segment imaging provides objective structural information that complements slit-lamp assessment. METHODS: This review summarizes the complementary roles of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in assessing OSSN depth through a ta

Presence of LILRB4 SNP rs1048801 modulates acute myeloid leukemia progression and inhibits CD4+ T cells proliferation.

Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor subfamily B member 4 (LILRB4), an emerging immune checkpoint molecule, exhibits therapeutic potential in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). While single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of immune checkpoint genes have been extensively investigated in AML, the association between LILRB4 genetic polymorphisms and clinical outcomes remains unexplored. We investigated SNPs within the LILRB4 immunoglobulin domain and immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif regions in 151 AML patients and 203 controls. The rs1048801 G allele was significantly associated with i

Remarkable response to Osimertinib plus Gumarontinib for EGFR mutation and concomitant MET exon 14 skipping in a patient with lung adenocarcinoma: A case report.

The evaluation of individuals with lung cancer for the presence of oncogenic mutations and the subsequent administration of personalized targeted therapies are of significance in clinical practice. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation and mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) exon 14 skipping mutation were previously found to be mutually exclusive. The co-occurrence of these mutations in individuals diagnosed with adenocarcinomas signifies a distinctive and uncommon molecular subtype of non-small cell lung cancer. A 70-year-old man was admitted to Shandong Cancer Hospital and Ins

Assessing adverse event burden in chronic lymphocytic leukemia treatment regimens: what's best for patient quality of life?

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) treatment has changed dramatically. Chemoimmunotherapy with fludarabine/cladribine, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab have been almost completely replaced by targeted therapies with small molecules, such as Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors or B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) antagonists. However, few studies have assessed the impact of novel therapies on patient quality of life (QoL). AREAS COVERED: This article reviews the safety profile of new therapeutic options and their impact on the QoL of CLL patients. The MEDLINE database was
