A shared-management web-based intervention for sleep deficiency in school-age children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and their parents: feasibility and acceptability study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a pilot randomized controlled trial of a sleep health intervention (SLEEPSMART) for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and their parents. METHODS: Fifty children, 8-13 years of age, with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and sleep deficiency and their parents participated in the study. Participants were randomized to either the SLEEPSMART intervention or the control group (usual care). The SLEEPSMART intervention lasted 7 weeks and included weekly educational modules, quizzes, assignments,

Short-term reduction in sleep irregularity modulates cardiac autonomic function and central hemodynamic parameters at rest.

Fluctuation in sleep/wake timing, often referred to as sleep irregularity, is associated with elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. We sought to determine the effect of reducing sleep irregularity on cardiac autonomic function and hemodynamic parameters. Sixteen adults (35 ± 10 years) were randomly assigned to 12 nights of regular sleep timing or habitual sleep (control) completed in a crossover fashion. Sleep was assessed using wrist actigraphy. Laboratory testing took place the morning after each 12-night period. Short-term EKG recordings were used to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV

Characterisation of sleep in a mouse model of CLN3 disease revealed sex-specific sleep disturbances.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are a group of recessively inherited neurodegenerative diseases characterizsed by lysosomal storage of fluorescent materials. CLN3 disease, or juvenile Batten disease, is the most common NCL that is caused by mutations in the Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, Neuronal 3 (CLN3) gene. Sleep disturbances are among the most common symptoms associated with CLN3 disease that deteriorate the patients' life quality, yet this is understudied and has not been delineated in animal models of the disease. The current study utilised PiezoSleep, a non-invasive, automated piezoe

The Impact of Sleep on the Lives of Women Who Have Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Qualitative Exploration.

Background: Breast cancer survivors (BCSs) have many lifelong symptoms of anxiety, depression, lymphedema, and fatigue that can be exacerbated by sleep disturbance. However, little is known about unique factors contributing to sleep disturbance among BCSs with lymphedema; this requires further investigation to offer appropriate support and treatment to these individuals. Therefore, the objective of this study was to capture perceptions and experiences of lymphedema and sleep among BCSs with lymphedema. Methods and Results: Qualitative description guided data collection and analysis as part of

Association between sleep and tinnitus in US adults: Data from the NHANES (2007-2012).

We evaluated the relationship between sleep factors and tinnitus risk using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2012), focusing on adults aged 20 to 80 years. Our analysis included 4354 participants, with sleep patterns categorized as healthy, intermediate, or poor. We observed that both short (odds ratio [OR]: 1.43) and long (OR: 1.48) sleep durations increased the risk of tinnitus compared with the healthy range (7-9 hours). Additionally, sleep disturbances were significantly correlated with tinnitus (OR: 1.52), with the strongest association occurring in

Sleep disorders in patients with endometriosis; a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age and is considered a critical gynecological problem. Endometriosis causes pain and infertility, both of which can impair the patient's quality of life. Sleep disorders account for the most bothersome presentation of impaired quality of life. This study investigated the frequency and severity of sleep disorders in women with endometriosis. METHODS: In this analytical cross-sectional study, 665 women referred to three hospitals in Tehran, Rasool-e-Akram, Pars, and Nikan, were included (463 patients with endometriosis and 202 w

High compassion predicts fewer sleep difficulties: A general population study with an 11-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between self-reported compassion and sleep quality. METHODS: The data came from the population-based Young Finns Study with an 11-year follow-up on compassion and sleep (n = 1064). We used regression models, multilevel models, and cross-lagged panel models to analyze the data. RESULTS: The results showed that high compassion was cross-sectionally associated with lesser sleep deficiency and fewer sleep difficulties. High compassion also predicted fewer sleep difficulties over an 11-year follow-up (adjusted

Modeling the Effects of Stress, Anxiety, and Depression on Rumination, Sleep, and Fatigue in a Nonclinical Sample.

Stress and affective distress have previously been shown to predict sleep quality, and all the factors have been shown to predict fatigue severity. However, few prior studies have examined the likely indirect mediational relationships between stress, affective distress, and sleep quality in predicting fatigue severity, and the potential role played by ruminative thinking. A short questionnaire asked 229 participants about their recent experiences of stress, affective distress, rumination, sleep, and fatigue in a community sample. High stress, anxiety, and depression were related to more rumina

Association of sleep condition and social frailty in community-dwelling older people.

AIM: This cross-sectional study examined whether sleep duration and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) were associated with social frailty in community-dwelling older people. METHODS: A total of 4427 community-dwelling older people (51.4% women, mean age 71.9 years) who met the entry criteria were included in this study. Social frailty was assessed by five questions, relating to going out less frequently than last year, not visiting friends sometimes, not feeling helpful to friends or family, living alone and not talking with someone every day. Participants with two or more components were de

A description of sleep behaviour in healthy late pregnancy, and the accuracy of self-reports.

BACKGROUND: The importance of maternal sleep and its contribution to maternal and fetal health during pregnancy is increasingly being recognised. However, the ability to accurately recall sleep practices during pregnancy has been questioned. The aim of this study is to test the accuracy of recall of normal sleep practices in late pregnancy. METHODS: Thirty healthy women between 35 and 38 weeks of gestation underwent level III respiratory polysomnography (PSG) with infrared digital video recordings in their own homes. Data regarding sleep positions, number of times getting out of bed during th

Sleep disturbance and longitudinal risk of inflammation: Moderating influences of social integration and social isolation in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Both sleep disturbance and social isolation increase the risk for morbidity and mortality. Systemic inflammation is suspected as a potential mechanism of these associations. However, the complex relationships between sleep disturbance, social isolation, and inflammation have not been examined in a population-based longitudinal study. This study examined the longitudinal association between sleep disturbance and systemic inflammation, and the moderating effects of social isolation on this association. The CARDIA study is a population-based longitudinal study conducted in four US cities. Sleep d

When Thinking Impairs Sleep: Trait, Daytime and Nighttime Repetitive Thinking in Insomnia.

We performed two studies in individuals with sleep problems to investigate trait, daytime, and nighttime repetitive thinking as risk factors for insomnia. In Study 1, 139 participants completed questionnaires on worry, rumination, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and a sleep diary. Trait rumination and trait worry were not associated with sleep impairment. In Study 2, 64 participants completed similar measures and a daytime and nighttime sleep-related worry diary. Only nighttime sleep-related worry was consistently associated with sleep impairment. Overall, results indicate that nighttime sleep-

Urinary melatonin levels, sleep disruption, and risk of prostate cancer in elderly men.

UNLABELLED: Melatonin has anticarcinogenic properties in experimental models. We undertook a case-cohort study of 928 Icelandic men without prostate cancer (PCa) nested within the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility (AGES)-Reykjavik cohort to investigate the prospective association between first morning-void urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) levels and the subsequent risk for PCa, under the hypothesis that men with lower aMT6s levels have an increased risk for advanced PCa. We used weighted Cox proportional hazards models to assess the association between first morning-void aMT6s levels an

Sleep disorders increase the risk of burning mouth syndrome: a retrospective population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders (SD), including apnea and nonapnea, and burning mouth syndrome (BMS) have been mutually associated with systemic diseases. Based on our research, the association between BMS and SD has not been elucidated. We determined whether SD patients have an increased risk of BMS. METHODS: We used information from health insurance claims obtained from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance (NHI) program. We identified patients newly diagnosed with sleep apnea syndrome between 1998 and 2001 as the apnea SD cohort, and newly diagnosed patients with nonapnea SD as the nonapnea
