The potential role of dedicated 3D breast CT as a diagnostic tool: review and early clinical examples.

Mammography is the gold standard in routine screening for the detection of breast cancer in the general population. However, limitations in sensitivity, particularly in dense breasts, has motivated the development of alternative imaging techniques such as digital breast tomosynthesis, whole breast ultrasound, breast-specific gamma imaging, and more recently dedicated breast computed tomography or "breast CT". Virtually all diagnostic work-ups of asymptomatic nonpalpable findings arise from screening mammography. In most cases, diagnostic mammography and ultrasound are sufficient for diagnosis,

The temporal region in unilateral coronal craniosynostosis: a volumetric study of short- and long-term changes after fronto-orbital advancement.

BACKGROUND: The temporal region is significantly affected by both restricted and compensatory growth in unilateral coronal craniosynostosis. Recurrent deformity in this region after fronto-orbital advancement often requires a revision operation in adolescence. The authors performed a three-dimensional analysis of the temporal region in patients with unilateral coronal craniosynostosis to define the baseline deformity and the immediate and long-term changes after fronto-orbital advancement. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with nonsyndromic unilateral coronal craniosynostosis who

What you need to know about ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament to optimize cervical spine surgery: A review.

What are the risks, benefits, alternatives, and pitfalls for operating on cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL)? To successfully diagnose OPLL, it is important to obtain Magnetic Resonance Images (MR). These studies, particularly the T2 weighted images, provide the best soft-tissue documentation of cord/root compression and intrinsic cord abnormalities (e.g. edema vs. myelomalacia) on sagittal, axial, and coronal views. Obtaining Computed Tomographic (CT) scans is also critical as they best demonstrate early OPLL, or hypertrophied posterior longitudinal ligament (

Cancer incidence in Italian contaminated sites.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cancer among residents in sites contaminated by pollutants with a possible health impact is not adequately studied. In Italy, SENTIERI Project (Epidemiological study of residents in National Priority Contaminated Sites, NPCSs) was implemented to study major health outcomes for residents in 44 NPCSs. METHODS: The Italian Association of Cancer Registries (AIRTUM) records cancer incidence in 23 NPCSs. For each NPCSs, the incidence of all malignant cancers combined and 35 cancer sites (coded according to ICD-10), was analysed (1996-2005). The observed cases were com

Imaging of ectopic thyroid tissue and thyroglossal duct cysts.

When a child or young adult presents with a mass in the anterior portion of the neck, diagnostic considerations include a thyroglossal duct cyst and ectopic thyroid tissue. These entities are often suspected clinically, and imaging provides an opportunity to evaluate the extent, confirm the diagnosis, and evaluate for complications. Imaging characteristics of a thyroglossal duct cyst as a simple cyst and of ectopic thyroid tissue as a hyperattenuating soft-tissue mass can help identify these lesions at computed tomography (CT); however, intrinsic magnetic resonance, CT, and ultrasonographic im

Otomastoiditis caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis: case report and literature review.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic Gram-negative bacillus that, although rare in humans, most commonly infects immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. Among the 59 pediatric cases of S. paucimobilis infection reported in the literature, the most common diagnosis involves isolated bacteremia. These cases are related to sporadic or epidemic infections. Death related to this infection occurred in only one case. The authors report a case of an 11-year-old boy with the diagnosis of Sphingomonas paucimobilis otomastoiditis and a thorough review of the literature on this infection in pediat

Retroperitoneal fibrosis associated with immunoglobulin G4-related disease.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare disease characterized by the development of inflammation and fibrosis in the soft tissues of the retroperitoneum and other abdominal organs. Retroperitoneal fibrosis can be of 2 types: idiopathic and secondary. The recently advocated concept and diagnostic criteria of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease, derived from research on autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), has led to widespread recognition of retroperitoneal fibrosis as a condition caused by IgG4-related disease. We now know that previously diagnosed idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis includes IgG4-r

The value of cervical magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of the obtunded or comatose patient with cervical trauma, no other abnormal neurological findings, and a normal cervical computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of the obtunded or comatose patient with a potential neck injury is a controversial subject. Some authors have suggested that MRI of the cervical spine adds no value in the evaluation of patients with a normal computed tomography (CT) of the neck. However, others have suggested that MRI is the gold standard for clearing the cervical spine in a clinically suspicious or unevaluatable blunt trauma patient. The purpose of this study is to evaluate our data in regard to these conflicting hypotheses. METHODS: Five consecuti

Value of preoperative imaging in the diagnostics of isolated metopic suture synostosis: a risk-benefit analysis.

Radiographic evaluation including plain radiographies and computed tomographic (CT) scans are considered as a necessary tool for diagnosis of craniosynostosis. As recently concerns about harmful effects of ionising radiation in children have been raised, some authors have suggested the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a helpful alternative in preoperative imaging of patients with isolated metopic synostosis. Besides confirming the diagnosis of trigonocephaly, MRI is the superior technique for the evaluation of underlying brain anomalies. However, if the benefit of preoperative imagin

Hepatocellular nodules in liver cirrhosis: MR evaluation.

Liver cirrhosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Common causes of cirrhosis include hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, alcohol consumption, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Cirrhotic livers are characterized by advanced hepatic fibrosis and the development of hepatocellular nodules such as regenerative nodules, dysplastic or neoplastic nodules. Cirrhosis is the strongest predisposing factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). For example, viral hepatitis is the main risk factor for cirrhosis and is associated with the increased incidence (1%-4% per year) of HCC after development
