Trace elements and C and N isotope composition in two mushroom species from a mine-spill contaminated site.

Fungi play a key role in the functioning of soil in terrestrial ecosystems, and in particular in the remediation of degraded soils. The contribution of fungi to carbon and nutrient cycles, along with their capability to mobilise soil trace elements, is well-known. However, the importance of life history strategy for these functions has not yet been thoroughly studied. This study explored the soil-fungi relationship of two wild edible fungi, the ectomycorrhizal Laccaria laccata and the saprotroph Volvopluteus gloiocephalus. Fruiting bodies and surrounding soils in a mine-spill contaminated area…

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in water-limited agroecosystems by novel integration of perennial grasses.

Climate change and variability have severely impacted agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions. It calls for innovations in agriculture to enhance soil health, increase water use efficiency, and mitigate soil organic matter and nutrient loss while sustaining crop production. This study investigated how integrating innovative circular buffer strips of native perennial grasses with row crop strips minimizes soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the factors driving these emissions. Soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes were measured weekly over two years in plots under buffe…

Whole orchard recycling in California's Central Valley: Benefits, management, and adoption.

Whole orchard recycling (WOR) has become a common practice in California (CA) orchards and vineyards due to declining options for agricultural biomass disposal. WOR is the process by which entire orchards or vineyards are shredded into chips, spread onto the soil surface, and incorporated into the soil before replanting a new crop. The paper summarizes current knowledge on WOR's impact on soils, crops, and the environment and outlines efforts to promote large-scale adoption across California. From 2008 to 2019, field trials were established at eight sites in the Central Valley to identify best…

Emissions of volatile organic compounds from aboveground and belowground parts of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Root systems represent a source of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that may significantly contribute to the atmospheric VOC emissions from agroecosystems and shape soil microbial activity. To gain deeper insights into the role of roots in the VOC emissions from crops, we developed a dynamic chamber with isolated aboveground and belowground compartments, allowing for simultaneous measurements of VOC fluxes from both compartments in controlled conditions. We continuously monitored VOC emissions from intact plants of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) i) over 24 h…

Understanding the Mechanisms of Fe Deficiency in the Rhizosphere to Promote Plant Resilience.

One of the most significant constraints on agricultural productivity is the low availability of iron (Fe) in soil, which is directly related to biological, physical, and chemical activities in the rhizosphere. The rhizosphere has a high iron requirement due to plant absorption and microorganism density. Plant roots and microbes in the rhizosphere play a significant role in promoting plant iron (Fe) uptake, which impacts plant development and physiology by influencing nutritional, biochemical, and soil components. The concentration of iron accessible to these live organisms in most cultivated s…

Phosphatase activity and culture conditions of the yeast Candida mycoderma sp. and analysis of organic phosphorus hydrolysis ability.

Orthophosphate is an essential but limiting macronutrient for plant growth. About 67% cropland in China lacks sufficient phosphorus, especially that with red soil. Extensive soil phosphorus reserves exist in the form of organic phosphorus, which is unavailable for root uptake unless hydrolyzed by secretory acid phosphatases. Thus, many microorganisms with the ability to produce phosphatase have been exploited. In this work, the activity of an extracellular acid phosphatase and yeast biomass from Candida mycoderma was measured under different culture conditions, such as pH, temperature, and car…

The influence of pH on iron speciation in podzol extracts: iron complexes with natural organic matter, and iron mineral nanoparticles.

The quantities of natural organic matter (NOM) and associated iron (Fe) in soil extracts are known to increase with increasing extractant pH. However, it was unclear how the extraction pH affects Fe speciation for particles below 30 nm. We used flow field-flow fractionation (FlowFFF) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the association of Fe and trace elements with NOM and nanoparticulate iron (oxy)hydroxides in podzol extracts. For extracts prepared at the native soil pH (~4), and within a 1-30 nm size range, Fe was associated with NOM. In extracts with a pH≥7 from the E …

Data-driven prediction of heavy metal bioconcentration factors in sunflower: A multifactor modeling study.

Heavy metal (HM) contamination of soil threatens food security and ecosystem health. Sunflower phytoextraction is an environment-friendly option for managing contaminated soil. However, formulating phytoremediation strategies requires a reliable prediction of the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of HMs in sunflower, which remains difficult because of the nonlinear, multifactor controls on HM uptake, and sparse and incomplete datasets. In this study, we developed a machine learning (ML) framework to predict the BCF of HMs in sunflower. Multiple ML models combined with various data preprocessing te…

Biochar has emerged as a multifunctional soil amendment with the potential to mitigate soil degradation, nutrient loss, and water scarcity. However, its effectiveness depends strongly on feedstock type and production conditions, limiting consistent application across agroecosystems. This review focuses on Paulownia leaf-derived biochar (PLB) as a promising feedstock for sustainable soil management. Current knowledge on its production, physicochemical properties, and mechanisms of interaction with the soil environment is synthesized, with emphasis on nutrient storage, water dynamics, and plant …

Higher remediation efficiency of Cd and lower CO2 emissions in phytoremediation systems with biochar application.

Biochar has been considered a promising material for soil carbon sequestration. However, there are huge knowledge gaps regarding the carbon reduction effects of biochar-plant-polluted soil. Here, rice straw biochar (RB) was applied in ryegrass-cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil to investigate the full-cycle carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and intrinsic mechanism. RB resulted in a 37.00 %-115.64 % reduction in accumulative CO2 emissions and a 31.61 %-45.80 % reduction in soil bioavailable Cd throughout the whole phytoremediation period. CO2 emission reduction triggered by RB can be attributed to the …

Anaerobic fermentation of straw with sulfate addition: A suitable approach for straw utilization in mercury-contaminated areas.

Returning raw straw to the soil can significantly elevate soil methylmercury (MeHg) and crop mercury (Hg) levels, underscoring the need to investigate safer approaches to straw utilization in mercury-contaminated regions. In this study, rice straw underwent anaerobic fermentation with the addition of sulfate, and the resulting fermentation products were utilized in a pot experiment involving water spinach to assess the impact of anaerobically fermented straw return on soil Hg methylation and its bioaccumulation. Findings revealed that the addition of sulfate during straw fermentation markedly …

Slaked lime improves growth, antioxidant capacity and reduces Cd accumulation of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) under Cd stress.

Slaked lime has been used to remediate contaminated agricultural soils as an in situ chemical immobilization amendment for a long time. However, the effects of slaked lime on peanut and soil cadmium (Cd) levels remain poorly understood with respect to remediating Cd-contaminated soil. In this study, six rates of slaked lime (e.g., 0, 300, 600, 900, 1200 and 1500 kg ha-1) were applied to evaluate the effects of slaked lime treatments on soil pH and the growth, Cd accumulation and physiology characteristics of peanut, which were in Cd-contaminated soil, and 0 kg ha-1 was taken as the control. Th…

Customizable 3D printed diffusion chambers for studies of bacterial pathogen phenotypes in complex environments.

Gaps in our understanding of the natural ecology and survival mechanisms of pathogenic bacteria in complex microenvironments such as soil typically occur due to the difficulty in characterizing biochemical profiles and morphological characteristics as they exist in environmental samples. Conversely, accurate simulation of the abiotic and biotic chemistries of soil habitats within the laboratory is often a significant challenge. Herein, we present the fabrication of customizable and precisely engineered 3D printed diffusion chambers that can be used to incubate bacterial cultures directly in so…

Partitioning carbon dioxide emission and assessing dissolved organic carbon leaching of a drained peatland cultivated with pineapple at Saratok, Malaysia.

Pineapples (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) cultivation on drained peats could affect the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and also the leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Carbon dioxide emission needs to be partitioned before deciding on whether cultivated peat is net sink or net source of carbon. Partitioning of CO2 emission into root respiration, microbial respiration, and oxidative peat decomposition was achieved using a lysimeter experiment with three treatments: peat soil cultivated with pineapple, bare peat soil, and bare peat soil fumigated with chloroform. Draina…

Wood pellet fly ash and bottom ash as an effective liming agent and nutrient source for rye grass (Lolium perenne L.) and oats (Avena sativa).

Fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) from a softwood pellet boiler were characterized and evaluated as soil amendments. In a greenhouse study, two plant species (rye grass, Lolium perenne L. and oats, Avena sativa) were grown in three different treatments (1% FA, 1% BA, non-amended control) of a silty loam soil. Total concentrations of plant nutrients Ca, K, Mg, P and Zn in both ashes were elevated compared to conventional wood ash. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, Se and Zn were found to be elevated in the FA relative to BA and the non-amended soil. At 28 d, oat above-ground biomass was found to be …

Dynamics of Carbon Storage Allocation and Its Drivers in Post-Fire Quercus acutissima Forests During Successional Recovery.

Post-fire plantations play a crucial role in recovering carbon stocks, yet how carbon is partitioned among vegetation, litter, and soil pools during stand growth dynamics remains insufficiently resolved for Quercus acutissima plantations. Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. This study quantified carbon-storage allocation and identified stand characteristics and soil factors associated with carbon recovery in fire-affected Q. acutissima plantations. Using a chronosequence design, we compared five stand-age classes (4, 10, 25, 45, and 50 years) on Huangfu Mountain, …
