Physiological Mechanisms of Silicon-Induced Drought Tolerance in Crops.

Drought is one of the most damaging abiotic stresses affecting global crop productivity, and its frequency and severity are projected to increase under ongoing climate change. Silicon (Si), although not classified as an essential nutrient, is increasingly regarded as a "quasi-essential" beneficial element that improves crop performance under water-limited conditions. This review summarises the physiological mechanisms of Si-induced drought tolerance, based mainly on literature published in the past five years. Rather than presenting these mechanisms as an inventory of separate physiological ef

Calcium addition modulates water use strategy of tree species with contrasting Al-tolerance in South China secondary forest.

Long-term acid deposition in South China has led to increased aluminum (Al) toxicity, while plants typically adopt diverse Al-tolerance strategies to adapt to acidified soils. Ca addition is commonly applied to alleviate acid deposition and associated Al stress, yet it remains unclear whether increased Ca availability modulates plant water use strategies among species with contrasting Al tolerance. We conducted a field experiment in a secondary evergreen broadleaved forest to simulated acid deposition and Ca addition. We quantified leaf transpiration, intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), and

Root-rhizosphere processes and physiological trade-offs govern polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fate in plant-soil systems.

Plant-soil interactions play a central role in determining the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in terrestrial systems, where soil-derived PAHs are a major exposure source at contaminated sites and root-rhizosphere processes contribute to removal. Root sorption of PAHs increases with hydrophobicity, whereas translocation to shoots follows partition-based behavior with an intermediate logKOW optimum, achieved most readily by low-molecular-weight compounds and supplemented by evidence for a proton-coupled, carrier-mediated component in wheat; more hydrophobic high-molecular-weight

Drought-induced delays in stem hydraulic development shape gas exchange and growth recovery in Douglas fir.

The limiting factors of tree recovery from drought, particularly the coordination between carbon sources and sinks, remain poorly understood. In this study, juvenile Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) were exposed to 28 d of mild or severe drought, followed by 35 d of recovery. We continuously monitored CO₂ and H₂O fluxes in shoots and roots to derive gas exchange and carbon accumulation, while measuring basal area to estimate stem growth and sapwood development. To identify underlying mechanisms of drought recovery, we periodically measured nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC), midday water pot

Differential resource acquisition strategies of herbaceous and woody plants in temperate forests.

BACKGROUND: Functional traits are pivotal indicators of plant ecological strategies, regulating resource acquisition and allocation through traits trade-offs. However, few studies have explored how trait coordination underlying resource-use strategies vary across plant life-forms from different trait dimensionalities. In this study, we examined 14 leaf functional traits in 81 plant species (27 herbaceous and 54 woody species) from the southwestern Qinling Mountains, including 6 structural traits (leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, leaf dry matter content, leaf tissue density, and l

Molecular and Physiological Insights into CAT- and SOD-Associated Redox Homeostasis Under Salt Stress in Artemisia argyi.

Soil salinity disrupts redox homeostasis and limits plant growth and development. Although catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) are key enzymatic antioxidants, the CAT and SOD gene families have not been characterized in Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), a species of medicinal and ecological importance. While SOD and CAT serve as the primary enzymatic scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, their genomic architecture and stress-responsive regulatory networks in A. argyi have remained uncharacterized. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive genome-wide analys

Chlorantraniliprole: bioactivation in coffee seedlings and control of resistant Leucoptera coffeella populations.

BACKGROUND: The diamide chlorantraniliprole stands out for its high performance in controlling agricultural pests, with high selectivity and reduced environmental impact. In coffee cultivation, this insecticide has been widely employed for the management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville, 1842). However, intensive use has favored the selection of resistant populations, compromising control efficacy and intensifying biotic stress in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological effects of chlorantraniliprole on coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L., cv

Monopotassium phosphate seed priming improves phosphorus deficiency tolerance in Chenopodium quinoa.

BACKGROUND: Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major factor limiting crop productivity in many soils worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the potential of seed priming with monopotassium phosphate (200 mmol L-1) to alleviate the adverse effects of P deficiency in Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Seedlings issued from unprimed and primed seeds were cultivated in plastic pots filled with inert sand under P deficient or P sufficient conditions. RESULTS: In plants from unprimed seeds, P deficiency decreased shoot and root growth, leaf P and potassium ion (K+) content, leaf water content, gas-exchange

NpWRKY38 Negatively Regulates Drought Tolerance by Impairing ABA/SA Signaling as Well as Photosynthesis in Narenga porphyrocoma.

Narenga porphyrocoma, a wild relative of sugarcane with high drought tolerance, is a valuable germplasm resource for mining drought-tolerance genes. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified NpWRKY38, a WRKY transcription factor that was significantly down-regulated under drought stress, a response that was further recapitulated by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) treatment and consistent with the presence of ABA-responsive elements in its promoter. NpWRKY38 overexpression in rice resulted in a significant increase in endogenous ABA content, yet led to insufficient stomatal

From stress signaling to yield stability: physiological and molecular mechanisms of wheat resilience to heat and drought stress.

Wheat resilience depends on coordinated signaling, reproductive protection, and source-sink regulation, providing a framework to breed robust trait combinations that stabilize yield under combined heat and drought. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of heat and drought events, posing a major threat to wheat productivity, yield stability, and food security. Because these stresses often coincide in the field, their combined effects can impair growth, reproductive development, grain filling, and final yield more severely than either stress alone. Wheat resilience under such c

Elucidating the drought-responsive changes in poplar cuticular waxes: a GWAS analysis of genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis.

Drought and episodic drought events are major impending impacts of climate change, limiting the productivity of plants and especially trees due to their inherent high transpiration rates. One common mechanism used by plants to cope with drought stress is to change the composition of their leaf cuticular waxes. Cuticular waxes are essential for controlling non-stomatal water loss and are typically composed of a homologous series of very-long-chain fatty acid-derived compounds, as well as flavonoids, tocopherols, triterpenoids, and phytosterols. In this study, we compared the cuticular waxes of

Unlocking the potential of cacao yield with full sun cultivation.

Cacao and chocolate production is a global industry worth around $133 billion. Full sun cultivation is a modern approach aimed at increasing yields. We evaluated six cacao clones (PS 1319, CCN 10, CCN 51, PH 16, SJ 02, and CP 49) grown under full sun conditions to assess their leaf physiology, leaf structure, yield, and yield components. Leaf physiology was measured through seven gas exchange parameters, while leaf structure was analyzed using eight measurements. For fruit and seed, we evaluated seven yield components. The clones showed differences in gas exchange. Clones PH 16 and PS 1319 had

Interplay of nitric oxide and indole-3-acetic acid signaling in regulating arsenate toxicity in tomato seedlings.

The problem of arsenic contamination is widespread, posing serious risks to both human health and crop productivity. Therefore, eco-friendly strategies are urgently needed to reduce metal stress-related yield losses and minimize its impacts on human health. Although the roles of nitric oxide (NO) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in combating abiotic stresses, including metal toxicity, have been reported, the mechanisms underlying their interaction remain unclear. This study investigates whether IAA and NO function through shared or independent signaling pathways in regulating arsenate [As(V)] to

Sustainable management of mixed soil contaminants through integrated biosystems: Efficacy of biochar and humic acid amendments in marigold phytoremediation.

A study investigated the fate and transport of mixed contaminants-chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-in soil using an integrated biosystem. Known concentrations of contaminants and organic amendments (biochar and humic acid) were introduced into unpolluted soil to assess degradability, mobility, bioavailability, and phytoremediation potential using marigold plants. Contaminants reduced plant physiological traits, including photosynthetic rate (33%), stomatal conductance (58%), and transpiration rate (74%) compared to control plants. Root traits and the effectiveness

Na⁺/Mg²⁺ ratio: a new physiological trait for salt resistance in faba bean (Vicia faba L.).

Magnesium plays a vital role in enhancing plant resilience under salt stress. However, its specific function in maintaining ion homeostasis, particularly in regulating sodium uptake, remains unclear. Recognizing that magnesium deficiency leads to increased potassium uptake and accumulation, and given that sodium and potassium possess the same charge, we hypothesize that salt stress disrupts ion homeostasis to a greater extent in magnesium-deficient plants compared to those deficient in potassium. To test this hypothesis, Vicia faba plants were cultivated hydroponically and subjected to moderat

Up-regulation of nitrogen metabolism and chlorophyll biosynthesis by hydrogen sulfide improved photosystem photochemistry and gas exchange in chromium-contaminated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is considered as plant growth promoter under heavy metal stress, though its specific effects on photosynthesis are rarely explored. This study investigates the protective effects of exogenous H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on chlorophyll metabolism and photosystem II (PSII) function in 24-day-old bean plants exposed to 10 μM chromium (Cr) stress. Sodium hydrosulfide (100 μM) reduced Cr accumulation in both roots and leaves, leading to restored plant growth. Concomitantly, H₂S mitigated Cr-induced oxidative damages by decreasing reactive oxygen species levels and fu

Molecular Regulatory Mechanism of Exogenous Hydrogen Sulfide in Alleviating Low-Temperature Stress in Pepper Seedlings.

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is sensitive to low temperatures, with low-temperature stress affecting its plant growth, yield, and quality. In this study, we analyzed the effects of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on pepper seedlings subjected to low-temperature stress. Exogenous H2S increased the content of endogenous H2S and its synthetase activity, enhanced the antioxidant capacity of membrane lipids, and protected the integrity of the membrane system. Exogenous H2S also promoted the Calvin cycle to protect the integrity of photosynthetic organs; enhanced the photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomat
