The role of peritraumatic dissociation and gender in the association between trauma and mental health in a Palestinian community sample.

OBJECTIVE: This research focused on gender-specific trauma exposure and mental health symptoms among Palestinians living in conditions of military violence. It also examined the gender-specific role of peritraumatic dissociation in moderating the association between lifetime trauma and mental health. METHOD: A random sample of 311 Palestinian women and 274 men ages 16-60 years from the Gaza Strip participated. The subjects were asked about lifetime trauma and peritraumatic dissociation during their most severe traumatic experience. Mental health was indicated by total scores and diagnostic va

Glutamate receptor expression in the PL-BLA circuit is associated with susceptibility to showing the PTSD-like phenotype.

While many individuals experience traumatic events during their lifetimes, only some go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This susceptibility and resilience to developing PTSD can be modelled in rodents using the stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) procedure, in which rats are exposed to a session of massed, unpredictable footshocks and subsequently assessed on tasks of adaptive fear learning. It has previously been observed that subpopulations of rats are susceptible and resilient to showing the PTSD-like phenotype following SEFL, and that these rats show differences in gl

Differential recruitment of brain circuits during fear extinction in non-stressed compared to stress resilient animals.

Dysfunctional fear responses in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be partly explained by an inability to effectively extinguish fear responses elicited by trauma-related cues. However, only a subset of individuals exposed to traumatic stress develop PTSD. Therefore, studying fear extinction deficits in animal models of individual differences could help identify neural substrates underlying vulnerability or resilience to the effects of stress. We used a rat model of social defeat in which rats segregate into passively and actively coping rats. In previous work, we showed that passively

Mental health disorders, childhood adversities, and recent stressors as risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidality among LGBTQA + higher education students.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence rates of mental health disorders, non-suicidal self-injury and suicidality among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Asexual (LGBTQA+) higher education students are consistently higher than rates for heterosexual students. Nevertheless, in the United Kingdom, there remains limited prevalence data and evidence on the risk factors that confer increased risk of suicide among this population. The purpose of the present study was to investigate mental health disorders, childhood adversities, and recent stressors as risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury, and sui

Beyond the human touch: A critical review of the promise and challenges of animal- and robot-assisted therapy in loneliness and mental healthcare.

Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dementia, are increasingly recognized as exacerbated by social isolation and loneliness, prompting growing interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven and robotic interventions for social support. Traditional interventions such as animal-assisted therapy (AAT) have demonstrated effectiveness by leveraging the human-animal bond to reduce stress, enhance social engagement, and improve emotional well-being. However, AAT faces logistical challenges, including availability, cost, and animal welfare conce

The association between childhood maltreatment and clinical features of depressive, anxiety, and stress-related disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is a recognised risk factor for a range of psychiatric disorders, though its influence on clinical features beyond diagnosis is less clear. This review synthesised observational evidence on associations between childhood maltreatment and clinical characteristics of depressive, anxiety, and stress-related disorders, including symptom severity, age of onset, persistence, recurrence, and suicidality. METHODS: This systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42024581968) searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from inception to August 29, 2024, for observatio

Is there a specific psychiatric background or personality profile in functional dystonia?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify if there was a specific difference between patients with functional dystonia (DysF) and those with adult-onset, isolated idiopathic ("primary") dystonia (DysP) in terms of psychiatric disorders, psychological stressor, dissociation correlates, and personality traits. METHODS: Thirty-nine clinically definite DysF and 30 DysP patients matched by age, gender and dystonia distribution underwent psychiatric interview based on DSM-5 criteria and additional testings for global cognitive and psychiatric functions (Mini-Mental State Exam

Exploring the Role of Traumatic Event Exposure in Tobacco Dependence Treatment Outcomes Among African Americans.

African Americans are more likely to die from tobacco-related diseases and less likely to quit smoking than their white counterparts. Evidence of greater prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among African Americans underscores the importance of studying the effects of traumatic event exposure on tobacco dependence treatment outcomes in this group. In this secondary analysis of data from a previously completed randomized control trial, we examined the effects of traumatic event exposure (e.g., serious accident) on tobacco dependence treatment outcomes, as well its moderating effec

"Dwelling in the Past": The Role of Rumination in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Prolonged exposure, a cognitive behavioral therapy including both in vivo and imaginal exposure to the traumatic memory, is one of several empirically supported treatments for chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this article, we provide a case illustration in which this well-validated treatment did not yield expected clinical gains for a client with PTSD and co-occurring major depression. After providing an overview of the literature, theory, and treatment protocol, we discuss the clinical cascade effect that underlying ruminative processes had on the treatment of this case. Speci

Molecular mechanisms underpinning deconditioning-update in fear memory.

Traumatic experiences are closely associated with some psychiatric conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Deconditioning-update promotes robust and long-lasting attenuation of aversive memories. The deconditioning protocol consists of applying weak/neutral footshocks during reactivations, so that the original tone-shock association is replaced by an innocuous stimulus that does not produce significant fear response. Here, we present the molecular bases that can support this mechanism. To this end, we used pharmacological tools to inhibit the activity of ionotropic glutamate recepto

A possible mechanism for PTSD symptoms in patients with traumatic brain injury: central autonomic network disruption.

Patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) often develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This syndrome, defined and diagnosed by psychological and behavioral features, is associated with symptoms such as anxiety and anger with an increase of arousal and vigilance, as well as flashbacks and nightmares. Many of these features and symptoms observed in PTSD may be in part the result of altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in response to psychological and physical challenges. Brain imaging has documented that TBI often induces white matter damage to pathways associated with the

Seclusion and restraint in patients with schizophrenia: clinical and biographical correlates.

Seclusion and restraint represent adverse experiences that cause negative attitudes against psychiatric treatment and psychopathologic sequels such as posttraumatic stress disorder. We examined 117 consecutive admissions with schizophrenia, with an average of 8.7 previous admissions. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and Global Assessment of Functioning were obtained at admission and discharge, and traumatic events in the biography were recorded using the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale. Twenty-four men (42.9%) and 18 women (29.0%) had experienced seclusion or restraint in their psychiatric

Long-term neurostructural and psychological effects of war stress in two generations of civilians from the former Yugoslavia.

The long-term neurobiological and psychological effects of war-related stress on civilians remain understudied. This study focuses on survivors of the war in the former Yugoslavia (G1) who now reside in the Czech Republic and on the children of survivors (G2) who were born after the conflict. Participants from G1, G2, and a control group (CG) with no war experience underwent structural MRI, answered a semi-structured interview, and completed psychological questionnaires (PTGI, PCL-5, SWSL, MSPSS, Brief-COPE). Voxel-based morphometry was used to assess brain volume differences. Compared to CG,

Understanding Socioeconomic and Psychological Vulnerabilities in Post-Disaster Recovery: Insights from the Displaced New Orleans Residents Survey.

Communities susceptible to disasters frequently endure severe socio-economic and psychological repercussions. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly understand the various vulnerabilities encountered by different groups. Residents of New Orleans, Louisiana, faced significant hardships after Hurricane Katrina hit on 29 August 2005. A multitude of individuals lost their residences, while others, regrettably, lost family members. The Displaced New Orleans Residents Survey (DNORS) offered significant insights into individuals and households living in New Orleans immediately prior to Hurricane Ka

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms, parenting stress, and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee mother-child dyads in Türkiye: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Refugee children exposed to war and forced displacement are at elevated risk for emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties. However, child outcomes may be shaped not only by direct trauma exposure but also by the psychological functioning of caregivers and stress within the parent-child relationship. The present mixed-methods study examined whether parenting stress was associated with the relationship between maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and child psychological and cognitive outcomes among Syrian refugee families living in Mardin, Türkiye. Behavioral and metabolic effects of escapable electric foot shock stress in male mice.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not fully understood, prompting research using animal models. One of the approaches to induce PTSD-like traits in rodents involves exposure to unavoidable, unpredictable electric foot shocks. This study explored the effects of repeated electric foot shocks on behavior, hematology, and metabolic parameters in male C57BL/6J mice. The mice were subjected to 15 electrical stimuli (each 0.8 mA for 10 s, 10 s interval between sessions) in an electric foot shock apparatus featuring metal floor bars and two insulating bars for

Exploration of stress reactivity and fear conditioning on intrusive memory frequency in a conditioned-intrusion paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The conditioned-intrusion paradigm was designed to provide insight into the relationship between fear conditioning and intrusive memory formation, which is relevant to understanding posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and treatment. However, boundary conditions of this new paradigm have not been explored and it is currently not known whether findings from this work are valid in a clinical context. METHODS: In the current study, we explored the relationship between stress reactivity to trauma film clips, usual exposure to violent media, renewal of fear conditionin

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Suicidal ideation, and Stress: The Moderating Role of Dysfunctional and Recovery Cognitions.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and stressor-related behavioral health conditions are prevalent in military populations and have become a major public health concern in recent years. Individuals who commonly report suicidal ideation often have comorbid mental health diagnoses (i.e., posttraumatic stress disorder; PTSD). However, the mechanisms associated with stress, suicidal ideation, and PTSD are unclear. METHOD: The present study examined the moderating role of dysfunctional and recovery cognitions between (i) PTSD and suicidal ideation, and (ii) stress and suicidal ideation in two distinct samples.
