Balanced double aortic arch with late-onset symptoms detected on 18F-FDG PET/CT in an octogenarian with advanced prostate cancer: A case report.

RATIONALE: Double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly usually diagnosed in infancy. Adult or elderly presentation is uncommon, and balanced-type DAA is relatively rare. On oncologic 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT), a mediastinal tubular structure with blood-pool-level FDG uptake may provide an important clue to a vascular anomaly. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 80-year-old man with biopsy-proven advanced prostate cancer underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for systemic staging. He had dysuria and back pain for more than 1 year, with mild

Determinants of oral functions and oral frailty in older community-dwelling individuals: a comprehensive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aging alters oral structures, affecting chewing and swallowing function. Oral function is increasingly recognized as an important component of systemic health outcomes in older individuals. Understanding age-related changes in oral function is crucial for oral health care. This study comprehensively evaluated the various oral function determinants and their age-related changes, identified key factors, and estimated the prevalence of poor oral functions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of older individuals (n = 206) participated. Oral functions were objectively assessed through de

Individualized perioperative nutritional management in orthognathic surgery: an evidence-graded, integrated framework linking upper-airway change, feeding function, and psychological status.

Orthognathic surgery corrects dentofacial deformity and increasingly addresses upper-airway obstruction, but postoperative dietary restriction may cause inadequate intake, weight loss, and lean-mass depletion. Nutritional care remains underexamined and rarely treated as a multidimensional problem. This mini-review synthesizes evidence across three interacting determinants of postoperative nutrition: upper-airway morphological change, temporary impairment of mastication and swallowing, and perioperative psychological status. We grade each domain by its proximity to measured nutritional outcomes

Newly Developed Evaluation of Esophageal Wall Motion Using Endoscopic Ultrasonography via Transnasal Endoscopy: Clinical Application in Esophageal Achalasia.

INTRODUCTION: A new minimally invasive method is needed to evaluate both esophageal muscle contraction and esophageal wall distensibility under physiological conditions. The primary objective of this study was to establish a novel examination method for evaluating esophageal wall motion using a transnasal endoscope with an endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) probe. The secondary objective was to apply this method to gain new pathophysiological insights into the clinical subtypes of achalasia diagnosed by high-resolution manometry. METHODS: The study included 20 patients with dysphagia. Patients

The Association of Dysphagia with Social Isolation, Mental Health, and Cognition in Older Adults.

Dysphagia is increasingly recognized in older adults and is known to have significant implications for quality of life. Prior research has suggested a complicated interplay between social isolation, mental health, and cognitive decline, with dysphagia potentially serving as a mediator within this cycle. In this study, we used two nationally representative datasets: Wave 1 (2008-2011) of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS) and the 1999-2000 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), to evaluate associations between dysphagia and depression, a

Transitional Foods in Dysphagia and Feeding Management: Perspectives of Speech-Language Therapists in Singapore.

Transitional foods (TFs) are foods that change texture with moisture and/or temperature. Despite their potential to aid chewing development and swallowing rehabilitation, TFs remain underutilized in clinical practice. This study explored the perspectives of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in Singapore regarding TFs in dysphagia and feeding management, aiming to inform the development of TF products to expand available food options. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among actively practicing SLTs. The survey included closed and open-ended questions on understanding of TFs and

Tic-Like Repetitive Ear-Popping Behavior With Objective Eustachian Tube Opening in an Adult With Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome presents with diverse motor and vocal tics, yet involvement of Eustachian tube dynamics has not been previously described. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman who developed an unusual symptom she described as an "ear-popping tic," characterized by a strong premonitory urge to release air from the ears and clicking sounds. Her long clinical history included childhood-onset tics, emotional instability, psychiatric hospitalizations, and fluctuating tic severity. At age 31, she reported repetitive ear-popping sensations accompanied by voluntary suppression to some extent. E
