BACKGROUND: Sézary syndrome is a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma characterized by erythroderma and leukemic involvement.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to define the clinical, biologic, and histopathologic features of Sézary syndrome without erythroderma.
METHODS: Features of patients with Sézary syndrome and normal-appearing skin or stage-T1 patches, fulfilling Sézary syndrome hematologic criteria and with histologically documented disease in normal-appearing skin were collected. Expression of Sézary syndrome molecular biomarkers in peripheral blood and skin lymphocytes were studied.
RESULTS: Five women a…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nelson's syndrome is a rare complication that can occur during the course of management of Cushing's disease. This article summarizes the recent literature on the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of this potentially life-threatening outcome.
RECENT FINDINGS: Nelson's syndrome, with rising adrenocorticotropin hormone levels and corticotroph tumor progression on diagnostic imaging, can develop following treatment of refractory Cushing's disease with total bilateral adrenalectomy with/without radiotherapy. However, data showing that radiotherapy prevents Nelson's syndrome i…

BACKGROUND: Postpolio syndrome (PPS) may affect survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis and is characterised by a complex of neuromuscular symptoms leading to a decline in physical functioning. The effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and rehabilitation management in PPS is not yet established. This is an update of a review first published in 2011.
OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the evidence from randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials for the effect of any pharmacological or non-pharmacological treatment for PPS compared to placebo, usual care or no treatment.

Intermittent claudication is frequently encountered in vascular surgical practice in atherosclerotic patients. However, it may also be observed in a younger subset of patients without any cardiovascular risk factors and can represent a challenging diagnosis. Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is rare but can cause intermittent claudication in young people. There is a lack of consensus about optimal strategies or diagnosis and management, particularly for variants such as functional popliteal entrapment. Since the first description in 1959, knowledge of the pathology and the underlying anatom…

Tourette syndrome is a childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. Although many youth experience attenuation or even remission of tics in adolescence and young adulthood, some individuals experience persistent tics, which can be debilitating or disabling. Most patients also have 1 or more psychiatric comorbid disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Treatment is multimodal, including both pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral treatment, and requires disentanglement of tics and the comorbid …

Cushing's syndrome is a rare condition in the general population and is even less common during pregnancy with only a few cases reported in literature. The diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome may be difficult during pregnancy because the typical features of the disorder and pregnancy may overlap. However, Cushing's syndrome results in increased fetal and maternal complications, and diagnosis and treatment are critical. This report describes a case of 26-year-old female at the 19th week of pregnancy with symptoms and signs of hypercortisolism, where ACTH-independent Cushing's syndrome was diagnosed…

BACKGROUND: Cogan syndrome is a rare, multisystem, autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology. Little is known about whether it affects pregnancy or whether pregnancy affects the disease.
CASE: A 24-year-old primigravid woman with Cogan syndrome diagnosed 3 years before her pregnancy presented to our clinic for prenatal care. During pregnancy she experienced no worsening of symptoms of her disease but reported subjective improvement in vision and hearing. Cesarean delivery was performed at term because of nonreassuring fetal status. There were no obstetric or postpartum complications.

Chylothorax results from various causes, such as malignancy, trauma, or infection. POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes) is a multisystemic syndrome that is associated with plasma cell disorder. Pleural effusion is a common manifestation of POEMS syndrome, but the association of POEMS syndrome with chylothorax has not been reported. We report on a 61-year-old female patient who initially presented with dyspnea and bilateral leg edema. Importantly, the patient had normal renal function. Her chest X-ray and computed tomographic ima…

Isaacs' syndrome is a rare neuromuscular disorder of continuous muscle fibre activity resulting from peripheral nerve hyperexcitability. Symptoms commonly include myokymia (muscle twitching at rest), pseudomyotonia (delayed muscle relaxation), muscle cramps and stiffness. It is caused by voltage-gated potassium channel dysfunction and may be inherited or acquired. Treatment commonly includes anticonvulsants, immunosuppressive therapy and plasma exchange. To date only two cases of Isaacs' syndrome in pregnancy have been reported. We present a case of maternal Isaacs' along with a review of the …

A 69-year-old woman with a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 17 was admitted to our hospital with 3 weeks of progressive dyspnoea on exertion. Her medical history and physical exam were concerning for superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome and while her workup did indeed reveal such, its aetiology was not due to a compressive mass associated with malignancy. Rather, she developed chronic thromboses in the setting of radiation-induced venous fibrosis. This case report details her case and explains the key clinical concerns, pathophysiology and incidence of radiation-induced SVC syndrome.
