Large bladder hernias protruding into the scrotum are rare, with 23 cases having been reported previously in Japan. We report a case of a patient with a bladder hernia secondary to benign prostatic obstruction who demonstrated a unique voiding procedure. The patient manually compressed his scrotum at micturition to facilitate bladder emptying. He underwent subcapsular prostatectomy, followed by inguinal hernia repair. Postoperatively, the voiding procedure and urinary flow returned to normal. We should pay attention to symptoms of bladder hernia in the follow-up of patients with bladder outlet

Little is known about the significance of pyuria in patients with spinal cord injuries. The progress in hospital of 55 such patients was studied. They were divided into 2 groups according to the method of bladder drainage on admission. Group A comprised 43 patients with indwelling catheters. OBJECTIVES: To preserve the bladder neck during radical prostatectomy in an attempt to maintain continence and decrease the incidence of anastomotic stricture without compromising the removal of cancer.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 365 consecutive radical prostatectomies performed from December 1991 through January 1997 was carried out. The records were reviewed in regard to the pathology of the prostate. In addition, the incidence of anastomotic strictures was determined. Urinary function and continence was evaluated in 195 patients by a quality of life questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: A case of acute abdomen arising from endometriosis of the bladder is described. The rarity of this condition prompted us to report on the present case and the problems encountered in making the differential diagnosis.
METHODS/RESULTS: A patient with endometriosis of the muscle layer of the bladder mimicking acute gynecological abdomen is described.
CONCLUSIONS: Endometriosis of the bladder is extremely rare and usually presents as urinary problems and rarely as acute abdomen.

Urethral catheterization, the standard method for measurement of bladder volume, is associated with patient discomfort plus the risks of urethral trauma and urinary tract infection. A portable ultrasound instrument that automatically determines bladder volume was used for 164 determinations and the digital readout correlated with the catheterized volume (r2 equals 0.79). This instrument is a noninvasive alternative to urethral catheterization for the determination of bladder volume in most patients.
