Injection laryngoplasty restores voice in subjects with unilateral vocal fold paralysis, but knowledge of its effects on airflow dynamics is limited. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a non-invasive technique to investigate airway resistance. It is easily performed during normal breathing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial similarity of vocal tract shaping patterns across speakers and the similarity of their acoustic effects. Vocal tract area functions for 11 American English vowels were obtained from six speakers, three female and three male, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize auditory function in patients diagnosed with post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS).
DESIGN: Eighteen patients with PTLDS were evaluated and compared to a normal population. Evaluations consisted of pure tone and speech thresholds, word recognition (WRS), acoustic immittance battery, auditory brain stem response (ABR), and loudness discomfort level (LDL). Little is known about the ultrasonographic (US) features of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast because this entity usually manifests as pure mammographic calcifications and is rarely evaluated with US. During voice evaluation and treatment it is customary for clinicians to elicit samples of the vowel /a/ from clients using various elicitation techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of four commonly used stimulation tasks on the laryngeal mechanism. Eleven female singing students, studying at a university music school, served as subjects for the study. The subjects phonated the vowel /a/ using 4 vocal stimulation techniques: yawn-sigh, gentle onset, focus, and the use of the voiceless fricative. Videoendoscopic and acoustic evaluations of their productions were done.

To test the hypothesis that flat affect in schizophrenia involves a motor-expressive deficiency, but not an emotional deficiency, we compared the acoustic properties of speech that are used to express emotion with the emotional content of the words. Most patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) are totally deaf after removal of their bilateral acoustic neuromas. Twenty-five patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 have been implanted with a brainstem electrode during surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma. In 62 patients, whose hearing acuity was normal or profoundly impaired, tinnitus suppression was attempted through electrical promontory stimulation (EPS) with a Promontory Stimulator (Cochlear Co.). The causes of tinnitus were idiopathic sudden deafness, ototoxicity, noise induced hearing loss, labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease, acoustic neuroma and unknown origin. Nowadays the cochlear implant (CI) offers a new method of hearing, especially for deaf patients who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids. However, it may be difficult to get used to this kind of hearing advice. Acoustic tumor surgery provided an ideal model in which to study possible contralateral hearing loss following a destructive surgical procedure on the inner ear.
