Neonatal head ultrasound abnormalities in preterm infants and adolescent psychiatric disorders.

CONTEXT: Infants born prematurely are at risk for a perinatal encephalopathy characterized by white and gray matter injuries that affect subsequent cortical development and neural connectivity and potentially increase risk for later psychiatric disorder. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation of perinatal brain injury, as detected by neonatal head ultrasound, to psychiatric disorders in adolescents who were born prematurely. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. SETTING: Community. PARTICIPANTS: Adolescent survivors of a population-based low-birth-weight (<2000 g; 96% preterm; born 1984-1987) cohort (

Impulsivity, frontal lobes and risk for addiction.

Alcohol and substance abuse disorders involve continued use of substances despite negative consequences, i.e. loss of behavioral control of drug use. The frontal-cortical areas of the brain oversee behavioral control through executive functions. Executive functions include abstract thinking, motivation, planning, attention to tasks and inhibition of impulsive responses. Impulsiveness generally refers to premature, unduly risky, poorly conceived actions. Dysfunctional impulsivity includes deficits in attention, lack of reflection and/or insensitivity to consequences, all of which occur in addic

Fine-needle aspiration of breast masses. A review of its role in diagnosis and management in adolescent patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the role of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) in the evaluation and management of breast masses in adolescents. METHODS: All FNAs performed on organ masses over a 15-year period on patients age 21 years and younger were evaluated. Cases were collected from four large university-affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics. Pathology records from the laboratory information systems were reviewed. Data included clinical information, anatomic site, and cytologic diagnoses. Surgical follow-up was included when available. RESULTS: Three hundred and twenty-five FNAs from 302 patie

Emotion-Focused Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment for Adolescents: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Family-based behavioral treatment (FBT) efficacy decreases in adolescence, a developmental period of gradual maturation and increasing autonomy during which emotion regulation skills develop. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of FBT alone compared with FBT plus emotion regulation across 6 months of treatment and 12 months of follow-up on adolescent weight change, emotion regulation, emotional eating, and parent weight change. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This parallel-group randomized clinical trial of adolescents 13 to 16 years of age with body mass index

Analyzing User-Generated Web-Based Posts of Adolescents' Emotional, Behavioral, and Symptom Responses to Beliefs About Depression: Qualitative Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common during adolescence. Early intervention can prevent it from developing into more progressive mental disorders. Combining information technology and clinical psychoeducation is a promising way to intervene at an earlier stage. However, data-driven research on the cognitive response to health information targeting adolescents with symptoms of depression is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap through a new understanding of adolescents' cognitive response to health information about depression. This knowledge can help to develop populati

Sex differences in associations between white matter microstructure and gonadal hormones in children and adolescents with prenatal alcohol exposure.

UNLABELLED: Despite accumulating evidence from animal models demonstrating that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) results in life-long neuroendocrine dysregulation, very little is known on this topic among humans with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). We expected that alterations in gonadal hormones might interfere with the typical development of white matter (WM) myelination, and in a sex-dependent manner, in human adolescents with FASD. In order to investigate this hypothesis, we used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess: 1) whether or not sex moderates the impact of PAE on WM micro

Perceived Neighborhood Disadvantage Predicts Similarity in Amygdala Representations of Negative and Neutral Images in Early Adolescents.

Neighborhood disadvantage encompasses multiple co-occurring adversities, including threat and deprivation, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Applying a dimensional framework to neighborhood contexts may help clarify how distinct features of disadvantage influence brain development. Here, we used representational similarity analysis to investigate associations between adolescents' neural representations of affective valence and neighborhood disadvantage, as measured by caregiver self-report and the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). One hundred and twenty-one adolescents aged 11 t

Positive youth development and psychological outcomes: Longitudinal associations with curiosity, creativity, and well-being.

This study examined the longitudinal associations between positive youth development (PYD) and three key psychological outcomes in adolescen … evels. Overall, the findings suggest that PYD does not operate as a uniform construct in predicting adolescent development. Instead, specific dimensions of PYD appear to be differentially linked to distinct psychological processes. These results highlight the importance of considering the multidimensional nature of PYD and suggest that targeted interventions focusing on …

Impaired Motor Competence in Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Evidence From a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is frequently associated with motor difficulties that may affect daily functioning, participation in physical activity, and developmental outcomes. Although motor impairments have been widely reported in this population, comparative evidence against typically developing (TD) peers remains fragmented across studies and assessment tools. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether children and adolescents with ASD show lower motor competence than TD peers and to identify the most affected motor domains. A systematic search was conducted in Sco

Clinical heterogeneity and disease progression during adolescence in AGPAT2-associated congenital generalized lipodystrophy: a case series of four patients.

OBJECTIVES: This case series describes the clinical presentation and longitudinal course of four adolescents with genetically confirmed AGPAT2-associated congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) followed at a pediatric lipodystrophy center. CASE PRESENTATION: Despite shared phenotypic features - including generalized lipoatrophy, muscular hypertrophy, acromegaloid features, and hyperphagia - metabolic severity varied markedly, even between siblings carrying the same homozygous AGPAT2 variant. All three female patients experienced rapid metabolic deterioration during puberty, developing insu

Valproate sodium-associated acute pancreatitis: a case report and systematic analysis of antiepileptic drug adverse events in FAERS.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced pancreatitis (DIP) has been increasingly recognized owing to the increased use of pharmacotherapy; however, valproate sodium (VPA)-associated DIP remains uncommon, particularly in adolescents, though severe and life-threatening cases have been documented in this population. We report an adolescent patient with epilepsy who developed DIP following long-term VPA therapy and further investigate the risk of antiepileptic drug (AED)-related pancreatitis through an analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: We present a case of an adolesce

Individual Differences in Developmental Trajectories of Global and Subcortical Brain Volumes Between Late Childhood and Late Adolescence: Findings From a 12-Wave Neuroimaging Study.

Adolescence is characterised by protracted structural brain development, with different brain regions showing distinct developmental trajectories. While studies have identified average developmental trajectories, few have formally quantified individual differences in the developmental trajectories of global brain structures and subcortical regions across adolescence. Utilising the unique 12 waves of high temporal resolution MRI data from the Danish HUBU cohort (N = 90; ages seven to 21; 745 scans; on average 8.30 scans per participant) and nonlinear mixed modelling techniques, we examined both

Trajectories of Individuating and Relating Autonomy in Adolescence: A Longitudinal Study in a Relational Cultural Context.

Autonomy is increasingly understood as a relationally embedded process rather than a pursuit of independence, yet few longitudinal studies track how volition develops across cultural and developmental contexts. This study examined the dual trajectories of individuating autonomy and relating autonomy across adolescence and educational transitions. Participants were 777 Taiwanese adolescents (48.8% female; M = 15.22 years, SD = 1.56), including junior high (n = 371) and senior high (n = 406) cohorts, each followed across four waves to yield eight cohort-sequential waves. Exploring socio-economic, biochemical, and genetic factors influencing thyroid status in Indian school-going adolescents.

Thyroid hormones are central to regulating metabolism, growth, and development, yet their complex interactions with socioeconomic, metabolic, and genetic factors remain understudied in diverse populations. We compared thyroid profiles - free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in Indian adolescents with anthropometric traits, metabolic markers, and socioeconomic status (SES). We observed that adolescents from higher SES backgrounds exhibited greater metabolic dysregulation, altered thyroid profiles, and abnormalities in lipid and adipokine levels

Management of Pediatric Breast Masses for the Pediatric Surgeon: Expert Consensus Recommendations From the APSA Cancer Committee.

BACKGROUND: The pathology and management of breast masses in pediatric patients is markedly different than in adults. The vast majority of lesions in children and adolescents are benign, but the rare malignant breast masses require prompt recognition and treatment. Pediatric surgeons navigating clinical evaluation of these masses must balance preservation of the developing breast with appropriate diagnosis and surgical management. METHODS: The current English language literature was queried for pediatric and adolescent breast masses. Identified manuscripts were reviewed and classified by leve

Body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents: a 20-year population-based time-trend study.

Body image has an important role in the health and development of adolescents. Body dissatisfaction and dieting can become chronic and continue into adulthood. There is a lack of recent, comprehensive studies on ongoing trends on body dissatisfaction. This study assessed time-trend changes in self-reported body dissatisfaction and dieting among Finnish adolescents at four assessment points. Representative samples of adolescents (N = 6660) aged 13-16 years participated in school-based, cross-sectional studies in 1998 (N = 1458), 2008 (N = 2044), 2014 (N = 1809), and 2018 (N = 1349), respectivel

Mental health and neurodevelopment in children and adolescents with Turner syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Turner syndrome (TS) is a rare sex chromosome aneuploidy, with an incidence of four in 10,000 new-born girls. TS is often associated with impaired social communication skills, but the extent to which these are attributable to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is uncertain. We made standardized assessments of the mental health and associated neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents with TS and report on the prevalence of concurrent conditions. METHODS: Our sample comprised 127 girls with TS, 5-19 years of age. We obtained reports of their mental health from a combinat

"I have hope, but I'm worried": Perspectives on parenting adolescents and young adults living with perinatally-acquired HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with perinatally-acquired HIV (PHIV) are living well into young adulthood. There has been extensive research on the social impacts of PHIV on adolescents and young adults (AYA). However, little research has examined their broader family system. This qualitative exploratory project examined the perspectives of caregivers raising AYA with PHIV. METHOD: Eighteen caregivers who cared for adolescents and young adults with PHIV over the age of 14 completed semistructured audio-recorded interviews. Questions focused on salient aspects of adolescent development and parenting exper…

Acute Mania and Catatonia in a Teenager Successfully Treated with Electroconvulsive Therapy and Diagnosed with Turner Syndrome and Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome (TS) is an X-linked chromosomal abnormality with a global prevalence of 1/2000 live-born girls. The physiological symptoms of TS have been thoroughly characterized, but only a few studies have described associated psychiatric symptoms. We report a case of an adolescent girl who presented with acute mania with psychotic features and was successfully treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). She was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar syndrome and TS. Case Presentation. A 17-year-old girl presented to us with manic symptoms, including disorganized speech, auditory
