OBJECTIVE: Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and depression frequently co-occur with alcoholism. This study examined the relationship between the presence of ASPD or depression and the course and severity of alcoholism.
METHOD: Alcoholic men (n = 207), recruited from a community-based sample, the Minnesota Twin-Family Study (MTFS), were categorized according to comorbid diagnoses into the following four groups: alcoholics with ASPD (n = 25), alcoholics with depression (n = 24), alcoholics with neither ASPD nor depression, but who were allowed to have additional psychopathology (n = 130) …

It was found that overall, pre-adolescent children of alcoholics were not more ill than children of non-alcoholics. There were, however, some differences worthy of note. BACKGROUND: The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription Medication, and Other Substance (TAPS) tool is a screening and brief assessment instrument to identify unhealthy tobacco, alcohol, drug use, and prescription medication use in primary care patients. This secondary analysis compares the TAPS tool to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) for alcohol screening.
METHODS: Adult primary care patients (1124 female, 874 male) completed the TAPS tool followed by AUDIT-C. Performance of each instrument was evaluated against a reference standard measure, the modified World Ment

Migrant women's alcohol use has been understudied despite evidence that gender, culture, and migration shape drinking experiences. This review synthesizes qualitative research on how migrant women experience host-country drinking cultures, their gendered drinking experiences and factors influencing their alcohol use. The review was conducted across five databases (ProQuest, Dimensions, Scopus, PsycINFO and PubMed). Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed qualitative studies published since 2000 examining migrant women's experiences with alcohol and drinking cultures. Twenty-two articles were inc

Internal states like hunger, pain, thirst, and arousal can bias behavior by affecting sensory and memory processing. Internal states are critical to understand in the context of alcohol addiction because they influence cravings, reinstatement, and relapse. Norepinephrine plays a key role in both hunger and alcohol-induced arousal and preference, but the circuit-level mechanisms through which it modulates the influence of hunger on alcohol preference are not well understood. We sought to address this using intersectional genetic tools for manipulating neurons expressing octopamine, the inverteb
