Bacterial biofilms are structured communities of bacterial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix, which can adhere to biotic or abiotic surfaces. This mode of existence permits these bacteria to endure in adverse conditions, including the presence of antibiotics Bacteria within biofilms are responsible for numerous infections in humans and animals, including bovine mastitis. It is therefore important to develop new therapeutic strategies to control and treat biofilm-associated infections. The results obtained by our group during the study of mixed bacterial biofilm communities sho

Bacillus licheniformis is considered a potential alternative to antibiotic growth promoters of animal growth and health. However, the effects of Bacillus licheniformis on the foregut and hindgut microbiota, and their relationships with nutrient digestion and health, in broiler chickens remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to identify the effects of Bacillus licheniformis BCG on intestinal digestion and absorption, tight junctions, inflammation, and the fore- and hind-gut microbiota. We randomly assigned 240 1-day-old male AA broilers into three treatment groups: CT (basal diet), BCG1 (basal

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) in the vaginal tract is a risk factor for preterm birth and adverse pregnancy outcomes. GBS colonization is also transient in nature, which likely reflects the contributions of pathogen determinants, interactions with commensal flora, and host factors, making this environment particularly challenging to understand. Additionally, dietary zinc deficiency is a health concern on the global scale that is known to be associated with recurrent bacterial infection and increased rate of preterm birth or stillbirth. However, the impact of zinc deficiency on vaginal health has

On the basis of comparative epidemiological statistical studies, the ’developmental origin of health and disease’ (DOHaD) theory was published in 1986, testifying the interrelation between certain perinatal events, like under- and overfeeding as well as infant mortality with cardiovascular lethality in adults (Barker DJ, Osmond C, Lancet, 1986; 137: 1077–1081) – and at present it is widely extended. The theory is rather similar to the hormonal imprinting concept, which had been published 6 years earlier (Csaba G, Biol Rev Cambr Philos Soc. 1980; 55: 47–63 and Horm Metab Res. 1984; 16: 329–335)

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation plays an integral role in the formation, growth, and progression to rupture of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs). Animal and human studies have suggested that, due to its antiinflammatory effect, aspirin (ASA) may decrease the risks of growth and rupture of UIAs. High-resolution vessel wall imaging (HR-VWI) has emerged as a noninvasive method to assess vessel wall inflammation and UIA instability. To the authors' knowledge, to date no studies have found a significant correlation between patient use of ASA and contrast enhancement of UIAs on HR-VWI.
METHODS: The

The present study examined synaptic communication between direct and indirect output pathway striatal medium-sized spiny neurons (MSNs) and their target structures, the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) and the external globus pallidus (GPe) in two mouse models of Huntington's disease (HD). Cre recombination, optogenetics, and whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were used to determine alterations in intrinsic and synaptic properties of SNr and GPe neurons from both male and female symptomatic R6/2 (>60 d) and presymptomatic (2 months) or symptomatic (10-12 months) YAC128 mice. UNLABELLED: Tropical corals are associated with a diverse community of dinitrogen (N2)-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) providing the coral an additional source of bioavailable nitrogen (N) in oligotrophic waters. The overall activity of these diazotrophs changes depending on the current environmental conditions, but to what extent it affects the assimilation of diazotroph-derived N (DDN) by corals is still unknown. Here, in a series of 15N2 tracer experiments, we directly quantified DDN assimilation by scleractinian corals from the Red Sea exposed to different environmental conditions. We sho

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM), particularly PM2.5 and PM10, is a major environmental health concern linked to respiratory diseases in humans and animals. Northern Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, experiences recurrent seasonal air pollution from biomass burning, exposing outdoor-housed livestock to elevated ambient PM levels. The bovine upper respiratory tract (URT) harbors both commensal and opportunistic microorganisms, and disruption of this microbiota may influence susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease (BRD). However, the impact of natural PM exposure on the bovine URT microbi

Vaccination against influenza virus infection can protect the vaccinee and also reduce transmission to contacts. Not all types of vaccines induce sterilizing immunity via neutralizing antibodies; some instead permit low-level, transient infection. There has been concern that infection-permissive influenza vaccines may allow continued spread in the community despite minimizing symptoms in the vaccinee. We have explored that issue for a universal influenza vaccine candidate that protects recipients by inducing T cell responses and nonneutralizing antibodies. Using a mouse model, we have shown pr

There was a dramatic upsurge in research activity after the recognition of Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission in South America in 2015 and its causal relationship to devastating anomalies in newborn infants. Progress in this area required a community of arbovirologists poised to refocus their research efforts and rapidly characterize the features of ZIKV transmission and infection through diverse multidisciplinary collaborations. Significant gaps remain in our knowledge of the natural history of ZIKV infection, its effects on neurodevelopment, modes and risk of transmission, and its interrelations

UNLABELLED: In mammals, successful pregnancy depends upon the readiness of uterus for implantation, followed by correct communication between the endometrium and the developing conceptus. The objective of this study was to elucidate changes in protein abundance associated with progression of estrous cycle and pregnancy from Day 9 to Day 12. We analyzed porcine endometrial tissue lysates by 2D-DIGE. Abundance of several proteins was altered depending upon the pregnancy status of animals. MALDI-TOF/TOF was used to identify a number of these proteins. Endometrial proteins that increased from Day

BACKGROUND: Unpasteurised fresh and souring dairy products form an essential component of household diets throughout many rural communities in southern Africa. The presence of milk-borne zoonotic pathogens such as Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis and zoonotic tuberculosis in humans, constitute a public health threat, especially in remote areas with poor disease surveillance in livestock and highly compromised human health due to HIV/AIDS.
METHODS: In this study we used culture to determine the longevity of M. bovis in experimentally inoculated fresh a

BACKGROUND: Androgen-dependent proteins (lipocalins) circulate in blood of male rats and mice and, being small (~ 18 kDa), pass freely into glomerular filtrate. Some are salvaged in proximal nephrons but some escape in urine. Several organic molecules can bind to these proteins causing, where salvage occurs, nephropathy including malignancy in renal cortex. In urine, both free lipocalins and ligands contribute to an increasingly-recognised vital biological role in social communication between adults, especially in the dark where reliance is on smell and taste. Crystal structure of the first-ch

Wolffia, a rootless duckweed in the family Lemnaceae, is increasingly recognized as a sustainable bioresource for food, animal feed, bioenergy, and biomaterials. Its productivity depends strongly on the associated microbiome, yet the functional roles of individual duckweed-associated bacteria (DAB) remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of DAB isolated from Wolffia globosa microbiomes on host plant growth and characterized their physiological traits. A total of 98 DAB strains were isolated from seven W. globosa microbiomes and individually co-cultivated with W. globo

The vomeronasal system (VNS) has been extensively associated with the regulation of sexual and social behaviors in mammals. In rodents, this system comprises two types of vomeronasal neurons sending parallel projections from the vomeronasal organ (VNO) to the anterior and posterior portions of the accessory olfactory bulb (aAOB and pAOB, respectively). Caviomorph rodents develop either a larger aAOB bias or a larger pAOB bias, which has been associated with ecological traits related to the pheromonal communication displayed by these species. However, it is still unknown how and when such AOB a

Zearalenone (ZEN) is an estrogenic mycotoxin commonly found in cereals, animal feed, and processed foods, making it an important concern for food safety and public health. Conventional chromatographic and immunological methods can detect ZEN; however, they often require expensive instruments, lengthy sample preparation, and skilled personnel, which restrict their use for rapid and on-site testing. Electrochemical sensors have attracted enormous interest of the scientific community because of their high sensitivity, rapid response, low cost, miniaturization potential, and compatibility with por

Respiratory and enteric diseases are major contributors to morbidity, mortality, and economic loss in cattle production, with significant implications for animal welfare, particularly in calves. Traditional diagnostic approaches have laid the foundation for pathogen detection in cattle, providing essential tools for disease surveillance and control. However, their targeted nature limits the capacity to identify unexpected, novel, or polymicrobial infections that often underlie complex respiratory and enteric syndromes. Recent advances in molecular technologies, particularly amplicon sequencing
