The anthelminthic efficacy of some differently obtained extracts of several plants was tested in vivo in laboratory animals and in vitro. The extracts were obtained by ethanolic, methanolic, aqueous, or chloroform, respectively, acetonitrile polyethylenglycol (PEG) and/or propylencarbonate (PC) elution at room temperature or at 37°C. The plants used were bulbs of onions, garlic, chives, coconut, birch tree, ananas, cistrose, banana, chicory, date palm fruit, fig, pumpkin, and neem tree seeds. The worm systems tested both in vivo and in vitro were Trichuris muris and Angiostrongylus cantonensis

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency, anemia and hookworm disease are important public health problems for women of reproductive age living in developing countries and affect the health of newborns and infants. Iron supplementation and deworming treatment are effective in addressing these problems in both pregnant and non-pregnant women. Daily iron supplementation and deworming after the first trimester is recommended for pregnant women although these programs usually do not operate efficiently or effectively. Weekly iron-folic acid supplementation and regular deworming for non-pregnant women may be a

In this study we present a patient with Loeffler's syndrome caused by Ascaris lumbricoides who presented with the clinical findings of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Our patient, who was twenty-five years old, and who had had symptoms such as coughing, expectorating, dyspnea and fever for approximately ten days, was hospitalized. We auscultated polyphonic rhonchuses at the both hemithoraxes. A chest X-ray revealed bilateral lower zone patch consolidation. Acute bacterial community acquired pneumonia (CAP) was diagnosed due to these findings and empirical antibiotic treatment was begun. Re

Taeniasis occurs after ingestion of undercooked pork infected with cysticerci. Most Taenia solium infections are mild; proglottids are rarely noticed in the feces. Cysticercosis develops with ingestion of eggs from a tapeworm carrier. Cysticercosis affects approximately 50 million people worldwide, and is seen mostly in Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, India, and Asia. We present a case of an 18-month-old child living in New York, who presented with seizures caused by neurocysticercosis. A family study found a 22-year-old mother, 7 months pregnant, positive for T. solium, which p

Three controlled studies were conducted to determine the efficacy against late immature (6 weeks) Fasciola hepatica of two currently available fasciolicides (Genesis Ultra and Coopers Sovereign) which are applied externally to cattle. Efficacy of the two products was assessed when application was made under winter, spring and summer conditions. Efficacies for winter, spring and summer respectively, based on arithmetic mean total fluke counts, were 78.9%, 91.7% and 99.6% for Coopers Sovereign and 73.4%, 89.7% and 99.6% for Genesis Ultra. Seasonal differences with treatment efficacy were indicat

The case was presented here in order to point out that an immunocompetent child might have Strongyloidiosis infection that might be misdiagnosed. A 9 year old male patient who had chronic abdominal pain with a feeling of weakness was treated several times for urinary tract infection. He had never been tested for the presence of parasites. After the patient's complaints occurred again, he presented at our hospital. Strongyloides stercoralis larvae were observed in his feces by microscopy. Albendazol (400 mg/day for three days) was prescribed. After 10 days, the feces of the patient was reexamin

A comparative analysis has been made of the efficacy of different chemotherapeutic schemes against hookworm infections in China. Hookworm eggs were detected by the improved Kato's thick smear method. Benzimidazole was offered to residents in the tested villages, while NaHCO3 was used as placebo in control villages. Data were analysed by negative binomial distribution with statistic software R2.2.1. In the tested village as a result of the application of selective chemotherapy, hookworm infection rate decreased from 58.79% to 1.08%, while the average of eggs per gram (EPG) reduced from 526.29 t

A 72-year-old man patient was referred to our institution for evaluation and treatment of right pleural effusion. Eosinophilic pleural effusion and peripheral eosinophilia were identified during the course of hospitalization. Pulmonary paragonimiasis was confirmed by the presence of paragonimus-specific IgG antibodies for Paragonimus (P.) westermani and P. miyazakii in his serum. Although Praziquantel, a highly effective agent for the treatment of lung flukes was repeatedly administered, the pleural effusion did not subside and the patient's condition gradually deteriorated until his death due

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth infections are common throughout the tropics and subtropics and they disproportionately affect the poorest of the poor. In view of a growing global commitment to control soil-transmitted helminthiasis, there is a need to elucidate the effect of repeated stool sampling and the use of different diagnostic methods in areas targeted for preventive chemotherapy that are characterized by low-infection intensities. In this study, we focused on schoolchildren on Unguja Island, Zanzibar, an area where anthelminthic drugs have been repeatedly administered over the p

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is a common health problem especially in Mediterranean and sheep-farming countries, caused by infection with the metacestode stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus. The liver is the most frequent primary site of Echinococcus granulosus infection in humans. Surgery remains the main treatment modality for cystic hepatic hydatid disease, with complete resection of the germinal layer being of major importance for recurrence. Perioperative administration of albendazole has been reported to improve surgical outcome but the results are controversial. We report here our observa

Novel bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)amines were synthesized using two methods and studied for antitrichinellosis activity. DFT calculations were performed in order to determine the geometry of molecules. All derivatives of 2-aminobenzimidazole exhibited higher activity in vitro against Trichinella spiralis larvae in regard to the activity of albendazole, moreover compounds 4f-i manifested antitrichinellosis effect, which surpassed five times the activity of albendazole. The in vivo screening of intestinal phase of the T. spiralis revealed 100% effectiveness of compounds 4g-i at oral dosages of 50 and

Although hookworms are known to stimulate inflammatory responses in the intestinal mucosa of their hosts, there is little quantitative data on this aspect of infection. Here we report the results of experiments conducted in hamsters infected with Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Infection resulted in a marked increase in goblet cells in the intestinal mucosa, which was dependent on the number of adult worms present and was sustained as long as worms persisted (over 63 days) but returned to baseline levels within 7 days of the removal of worms by treatment with ivermectin. Increased mast cell responses

BACKGROUND: Eight- and 6-week courses of doxycycline are superior to standard treatment of bancroftian filariasis. Standard treatment (albendazole plus ivermectin) is associated with adverse reactions. We assessed whether a shorter (i.e, 3-week) course of doxycycline with standard treatment would show superior efficacy to standard treatment alone and reduce the incidence of adverse reactions.
METHODS: A total of 44 adults from Ghana were recruited in January 2003: 20 received doxycycline (200 mg/day) for 3 weeks, and 24 received matching placebo. Participants received albendazole (400 mg) and

This work investigated the possible use of AdDP as adjuvant therapy to praziquantel (PZQ) in mice infected with PZQ-insusceptible Schistosoma mansoni isolate in a trial to increase the susceptibility of this isolate to the drug. Two batches of C57 BL/6 mice were infected with PZQ-susceptible and -insusceptible S. mansoni isolates, and each batch was divided into five groups. Seven weeks postinfection, the experimental group received AdDP (5 mg/kg) in addition to PZQ in reduced dose (3x100 mg/kg). Three of the remaining four groups were treated controls; they received AdDP, PZQ in reduced dose

Some have claimed that triclabendazole, a safe and efficacious drug for the treatment of fascioliasis, also exhibits antischistosomal properties, but results are conflicting. We assessed the effect of triclabendazole and its two main metabolites against two different strains of Schistosoma mansoni harbored in mice. Low worm burden reductions (18.6-35.9%) were observed in mice infected with an Egyptian strain of S. mansoni and treated with a single dose of 120 mg/kg 3 days before infection or single/double doses of 120-200 mg/kg 7 weeks after infection. Triclabendazole failed to significantly r

Cutaneous manifestations in disseminated strongyloidiasis are infrequent but should raise the suspicion for its diagnosis. We retrospectively evaluated the charts of six patients with cancer and a proven diagnosis of disseminated strongyloidiasis. All patients had received prophylaxis with albendazole before starting antineoplastic therapy, which included high-dose steroids. They presented with septic shock, acute respiratory failure and characteristic purpuric periumbilical skin lesions. Strongyloides larvae were identified in tracheal aspirates (n=5), gastric aspirates (n=4), lung (n=2) and

A decade ago, a study revealed that praziquantel (PZQ) failed to cure 1.6% of those with intestinal schistomiasis in five villages of the Nile delta region. The recommended dosage of PZQ is a single 40 mg/kg oral dose, and each of these patients continued to pass viable Schistosoma mansoni eggs despite three successive doses at or above this level. The eggs passed by these uncured villagers produced adult worms that were, in most cases, significantly less responsive to PZQ in vitro. This report investigates the current sensitivity of S. mansoni infections to PZQ after 10 years of therapeutic p
