Virgil's plague of the ancient world, Bacillus anthracis, is rare in developed nations. Unfortunately rural communities across the globe continue to be exposed to this potentially lethal bacterium. Herein we report a case of periorbital cutaneous anthrax infection in a 3-year-old girl from the rural area surrounding Harare, Zimbabwe with a brief review of the literature.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a Gram-positive bacillus that causes infections primarily in animals. In humans, this bacterium usually causes localized cutaneous infections called erysipeloid. Here we report a case of pneumonia with isolation of E. rhusiopathiae from bronchoalveolar lavage and sputum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a pneumonia case caused by E. rhusiopathiae confirmed by culture.

Anthrax is primarily a disease of herbivores, but it also causes cutaneous, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in humans. Bacillus anthracis is an uncommon cause of meningitis and generally produces a haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis. We present the CT and MR findings of anthrax meningoencephalitis due to the cutaneous form of anthrax in a 12-year-old boy. They showed focal intracerebral haemorrhage with leptomeningeal enhancement.

Hansen's disease, leprosy, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the acid-fast bacillus Mycobacterium leprae. There are multiple forms of the disease ranging from the relatively benign to the progressive, malignant lepromatous leprosy. There is effective antimicrobial treatment available that is capable of curing the disease. We report the case of a post heart transplant patient acquiring Hansen's disease.

The use of Bacillus anthracis as a biological weapon has the potential of causing considerable loss of human life compared to other pathogens. Inhalational anthrax has a very high mortality and can be induced by spraying an aerosol of anthrax spores. Research in recent years has increased our knowledge, especially of pathogenesis and treatment. A short review is presented here.

A 63-year-old man developed black crusts on the parietal scalp that showed mixed infections of dermatophytes and Bacillus anthracis on culture. The lesions improved with bifonazole, griseofulvin and bacampicillin hydrochloride. Although cutaneous anthrax is now a very rare disease, the mortality is high in untreated cases. If a patient has black crusts, anthrax should be differentiated firstly.

A case of noninfectious polyarthritis of over one year's duration with calcaneal enthesopathy in a patient with visceral tuberculosis is reported. This pattern, termed Poncet's disease, shares pathophysiologic mechanisms with Freund's complete adjuvant-induced arthritis. Future studies should include polymerase chain reaction studies to look for the tubercle bacillus in joint fluid or synovial biopsy specimens.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacillus typically associated with opportunistic infections. Bacteraemia caused by this organism is rare. We report a case of A. xylosoxidans bacteraemia in a young patient who presented with fever and a systemic inflammatory response and was successfully treated with targeted antimicrobial therapy, consisting of ciprofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone) and amikacin (an aminoglycoside), guided by antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

This report describes a case of bacteraemia caused by Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens. Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens is a rare cause of bacteraemia in humans, and when encountered usually occurs in immunocompromised patients. The organism is an anaerobic, spiral shaped, Gram negative bacillus with bipolar tufts of flagella. In this report, the morphology, with special reference to electron microscopic features, culture characteristics, and antimicrobial susceptibility are described.

Whipple's disease has traditionally been considered to be a rare multisystem disorder dominated by malabsorption. The recent identification of the Whipple's disease bacillus has, using polymerase chain reaction based assays, fueled advances in the investigation, diagnosis, and management of this disease. This leader reviews the aetiology, clinical manifestations, investigation, and treatment of Whipple's disease in the light of this new information.
