Flexible multilevel nonvolatile biocompatible memristor with high durability.

Current protein or glucose based biomemristors have low resistance-switching performance and require complex structural designs, significantly hindering the development of implantable memristor devices. It is imperative to discover novel candidate materials for biomemristor with high durability and excellent biosafety for implantable health monitoring. Herein, we initially demonstrate the resistance switching characteristics of a nonvolatile memristor in a configuration of Pt/AlOOH/ITO consisting of biocompatible AlOOH nanosheets sandwiched between a Indium Tin Oxides (ITO) electrode and a pla

A pH-sensitive field-effect transistor for monitoring of cancer cell external acid environment.

The external acid environment of cancer cells is different from that of normal cells, making a profound impact on cancer progression. Here we report a simple poly-l-lysine-modified graphene field-effect transistor (PLL@G-FET) for in situ monitoring of extracellular acidosis around cancer cells. PLL is a well-known material with good biocompatibility and is rich in amino groups that are sensitive to hydrogen ions. After a simple drop-casting of PLL on the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) FET surface, the PLL@G-FET was able to realize the real-time monitoring of the localized pH change of cancer cel

New Vascular Graft Using the Decellularized Human Chorion Membrane.

The increase of both arterial occlusive diseases and coronary heart diseases leads to a higher demand for small-diameter vascular grafts (<6 mm). The gold standard for small-diameter vessel replacement is the use of autologous veins. Nevertheless, up to 30% of these patients need to use vascular grafts. Although synthetic polymers have been successfully used for the replacement of large-diameter vascular grafts (>6 mm), they are associated with thrombosis, intimal hyperplasia, calcification, and chronic inflammation when used as small-diameter vascular grafts. Therefore, natural materials have

Role of protein adsorption in the bio corrosion of metallic implants - A review.

Implants are exposed to a complex physiological environment that contains various organic compounds, especially proteins. The adsorption of proteins has an immense influence on the corrosion, biocompatibility and wear properties of implantable metals. Proteins engage in multiple processes that could potentially inhibit or promote metal degradation, depending on the type of proteins, their concentration and the properties of the implant material. In the bio corrosion process, proteins are denatured and transform into a film on the metal surface, inhibiting corrosion. This film is found on many

High VEGF Secretion Using Co and B Co-doped Bioactive Mesoporous Glass Nanoparticles for Enhanced Angiogenesis.

This investigation presents a novel approach to engineering mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) through selective ion doping. This method can significantly potentiate their physicochemical properties and biological performance. We elucidate the effects of boron (B) and cobalt (Co) doping, individually and in combination, on MBGNs' structural, functional, and biocompatible characteristics. Using microemulsion-assisted sol-gel synthesis, we fabricated MBGNs with sizes ranging from 150 to 250 nm and shapes that shifted from spherical to more irregular shapes upon co-doping, as observ

Zn doped iron oxide nanoparticles with high magnetization and photothermal efficiency for cancer treatment.

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are powerful agents to induce hyperthermia in tumours upon the application of an alternating magnetic field or an infrared laser. Dopants have been investigated to alter different properties of materials. Herein, the effect of zinc doping into iron oxide NPs on their magnetic properties and structural characteristics has been investigated in-depth. A high temperature reaction with autogenous pressure was used to prepare iron oxide and zinc ferrite NPs of same size and morphology for direct comparison. Pressure was key in obtaining high quality nanocrystals with red

Polymeric heart valves for surgical implantation, catheter-based technologies and heart assist devices.

Efficient function and long-term durability without the need for anticoagulation, coupled with the ability to be accommodated in many different types of patient, are the principal requirements of replacement heart valves. Although the clinical use of valves appeared to have remained steady for several decades, the evolving demands for the elderly and frail patients typically encountered in the developed world, and the needs of much younger and poorer rheumatic heart disease patients in the developing world have now necessitated new paradigms for heart valve technologies and associated material

Magnesium oxide-containing radiopaque polyurethane for infection-resistant catheter applications.

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance highlights the urgent need for advanced antimicrobial materials preventing device-associated infections. This growing threat has spurred intensive research into alternative approaches to prevent bacterial colonisation, particularly in medical devices such as catheters highly susceptible to microbial contamination and biofilm formation. The incorporation of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles on polymeric matrices offers a promising approach to developing antibacterial materials for biomedical applications. In this study, thermoplastic polyuret

Focused ion beam (FIB) prepared microtextured microneedle array capable of delivering drugs through punctured skin.

Microtextured microneedles are tiny needle-like structures with micron-scale microtextures, and the drugs stored in the microtextures can be released after entering the skin to achieve the effect of precise drug delivery. In this study, the skin substitution model of Ogden's hyperelastic model and the microneedle array and microtexture models with different geometrical parameters were selected to simulate and analyse the flow of the microtexture microneedle arrays penetrating the skin by the finite-element method, and the length of the microneedles was determined to be 200 μm, the width 160 μm

[Assessment of bovine pericardium (tutomesh®) and coated polypropylene (proceed®) in the para-oesophageal position in a pig model].

BACKGROUND: Hiatal hernias are nowadays increasingly treated with meshes. Often, biological implants are being used for this application. Oesophageal perforations have been reported as rare but serious complications from the application of synthetic meshes at the oesophageal hiatus. The role of the different mesh types has not been clearly established by experimental research so far. In the present large animal model, we investigated two implant types (Tutomesh® and Proceed®) with respect to their biocompatibility and mechanical stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used 12 domestic pigs aged t

From the synthesis of wearable polymer sensors to their potential for reuse and ultimate fate.

The objective of this perspective is to review the high-interest field of wearable polymer-based sensors-from synthesis to use and detection mechanisms-with a focus on their transient nature, potential for reuse, and ultimate fate. While many bulk polymers have long been mass-produced, the materials needed to create polymer-based sensors-often with unique properties (e.g., being electronically conductive)-are still highly active areas of research. Polymer-based materials and composites, when investigated as wearable sensors, have a wide range of applications with most falling under the umbrell

Janus membranes with asymmetric cellular adhesion behaviors for regenerating eardrum perforation.

The tympanic membrane plays an important role in the human hearing system, which is easily perforated under unfavorable conditions, leading to loss of hearing and otitis media. Many autologous materials and artificial materials have been used to repair a perforated tympanic membrane, but these materials sometimes can cause severe hearing loss because of their adhesion to the ossicle during the healing process and the postoperative process. Herein, we report Janus membranes with asymmetric cellular adhesion behaviors for regenerating the eardrum. These Janus membranes are constructed by co-depo

Dental iatrogenesis, Part 2.

To substantiate biocompatibility of dental materials and techniques, and thereby reduce iatrogenesis, tests for pulp and dentinal responses have been developed. These have shown that high-speed tooth cutting techniques are superior to low-speed techniques even when both incorporate air-water coolant sprays; pressure when placing restorative materials intensifies pulp responses induced by the cutting procedure, and that chemically self-cured resin composites requiring the application of a matrix to enhance adaptation intensify pulp response as compared to visible light-cured equivalents applied
