The objective of this project was to explore the distribution and related factors of blood lead and the association between blood lead and hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb). All the data were from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In total, 15,097 (aged 20-80 years) participants were included. Participants without a history of blood transfusion were more likely to be exposed to lower levels of blood lead [-2.30 (-3.13, -1.47) for HBcAb (-) and -2.23 (-4.54, 0.08) for HBcAb (+)]. The odds ratio (OR) of HBcAb (+) increased with blood lead and the result was 1.09…

The gravimetric method of measuring blood loss was used during all types of pediatric operations at The Montreal Children's Hospital. Results of 1787 such measurements indicated that the method is of value in the management of transfusion. Grading blood loss as minor, moderate or severe, in terms of its relation to total blood volume or body weight is a procedure of practical value. Operations were grouped into those that usually led to a loss of less than 10% of the blood volume (7.5 ml./kg.), those with a loss usually between 10% and 14% and those with blood loss usually over 14% (10.5 ml./k

The national reference Center for blood groups checked samples of reagents and devices used in France for a definitive verification of pretransfusion ABO tests performed at the patient's bedside, as defined by French health authority regulations. The results of an initial inquiry was published in 1991. The new study shows no significant improvement of the quality of reagents and devices. This is a major concern considering the importance of ABO incompatibility in severe hemolytic transfusion reactions.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the main cause of enteric acute viral hepatitis worldwide. In this epidemiological framework, it has become a threat to blood safety and a relevant issue for blood transfusions. However, there is a paucity of data regarding prevalence of HEV infection. The aim of this study was to determine HEV seroprevalence in blood donors from different regions from Argentina.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum samples from 391 individuals attending five blood donor centers located in different regions from Argentina were analyzed for anti-HEV IgG and anti-HEV IgM.
RESULTS:…

INTRODUCTION: Increased awareness of the risks related to homologous blood transfusions such as immunological reactions, transmission of infections, and immunosuppression, has necessitated exploration of alternative techniques to deal with the needs of intra-operative blood transfusion. Strategies that reduce or remove the risks associated with allogeneic transfusion include pre-operative autologous donation, peri-operative cell-salvage techniques, deliberate hypotension, and pharmacological interventions. Acute normovolaemic haemodilution is another such technique.
METHODS: The effect of acu…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Routine HEV testing of blood products has recently been implemented in Great Britain and the Netherlands. The relevance of transfusion-transmitted HEV infections is still controversially discussed in Europe.
METHODS: All blood donations at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf were prospectively tested for HEV RNA by pooled PCR from October 2016 to May 2017. Reactive samples were individually retested. Additionally, stored samples from previous donations of positive donors were tested to determine the duration of HEV viraemia. HEV RNA-positive donors and a control

Adverse reactions from donor-recipient sex-mismatched transfusions have been reported in the field of transfusion medicine. Immature CD71+ red blood cells (CD71+ RBCs) may influence these reactions through an immunomodulatory mechanism potentially linked to enriched intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study was conducted to investigate the effect of CD71+ RBCs on erythrophagocytosis, a common in vitro test for hemolysis risk in incompatible blood transfusions. Enriched CD71+ RBCs and CD71- RBCs were exposed to allogenic peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). CD71+ RBCs were …

BACKGROUND: In the Rhesus (Rh) blood group system, D is the most immunogenic antigen. RhD-negative patients with anti-D must be transfused RhD-negative red blood cells (RBC) to avoid hemolytic transfusion. RBC of Asian-type DEL phenotype are typed as RhD-negative by routine blood group serological methods because they have very weak expression of D antigen. The prevalence of Asian-type DEL phenotypes was 30% in RhD-negative Chinese donors. Therefore, this DEL type can be transfused to RhD-negative patients with anti-D. However, there is a lack of direct evidence regarding the safety of this pr

In order to investigate the involvement of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of aplastic anaemia (AA) we measured the expression of the Fas receptor (membrane protein that triggers apoptosis), Fas ligand (FasL), bcl-2 (cytoplasmatic protein that blocks apoptosis) and p53 (nuclear protein that induces apoptosis) in CD3 and CD19 lymphocytes from the peripheral blood or bone marrow of controls, patients with AA, aplastic anaemia in complete remission (AA-CR) and multiply transfused patients without aplastic anaemia. The Fas receptor was overexpressed in both T and B lymphocytes from the peripheral bl

Artificial intelligence (AI) uses sophisticated algorithms to "learn" from large volumes of data. This could be used to optimise recruitment of blood donors through predictive modelling of future blood supply, based on previous donation and transfusion demand. We sought to assess utilisation of predictive modelling and AI blood establishments (BE) and conducted predictive modelling to illustrate its use. A BE survey of data modelling and AI was disseminated to the International Society of Blood transfusion members. Additional anonymzed data were obtained from Italy, Singapore and the United St…

Craniosynostosis is a congenital condition characterized by the premature closure of one or more sutures in the skull after birth, often necessitating urgent surgical intervention. Nevertheless, cranial vault reconstruction surgery can cause rapid and massive blood loss. This procedure requires a blood transfusion, which entails potential hazards. In addition, the hemostatic system in children differs significantly from that in adults, resulting in increased bleeding during surgical procedures. We conducted a comprehensive literature review in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, …

INTRODUCTION: The management of patients with critical bleeding requires a multidisciplinary approach to achieve haemostasis, optimise physiology, and guide blood component use. The 2011 Patient blood management guidelines: module 1 - critical bleeding/massive transfusion were updated and published. Systematic reviews were conducted for pre-specified research questions, and recommendations were based on meta-analyses of included studies.
MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS: The critical bleeding/massive transfusion guideline includes seven recommendations and 11 good practice statements addressing: major ha

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of defective platelets could contribute to the inefficiency of platelet transfusion in preventing or stopping bleeding.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This single-center prospective study aimed to determine the prevalence of functional platelet abnormalities in a population of blood donors with a clinical history of bleeding diathesis or with history of hematoma (>4 cm) during blood donation. Donors with positive bleeding screening questionnaire were referred to the reference center for rare platelet diseases at La Timone University Hospital (Marseille) to confirm the bleed

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) undergo multiple blood tests. Small volume vacuum phlebotomy tubes (SVTs) provide an important blood conservation measure. SVTs reduce summative blood loss and may reduce odds of transfusion. We aimed to determine whether low volume blood sampling using SVTs for routine diagnostic purposes translates to decreased fall in haemoglobin concentration, and examine downstream effects on anaemia and need for transfusion during ICU admission.
